Review The Sheraton Vistana Resort Thread (key links on p.1)

I think everyone has their own list, and it varies by TS resort, so sometimes we bring things that aren't always needed. For Vistana, the bathroom includes hand soap, decent hairdryer(s), TP is pretty good, and if you run low you can call housekeeping for more. unlike some hotels, they do not provide shampoo, conditioner or lotion - bring your own along.

Laundry supplies are not supplied, so bring your own. We always bring dryer sheets and the puck/tablet type soap. We don't usually use the pucks at home, but they are very convenient for travel, and are much cheaper than buying a little box of detergent at the marketplace.

In the kitchen, most of what you need is provided, and will be restocked as required. We bring our own dishwasher tabs as the cheap institutional packets they provide don't do a great job of cleaning. They have the little packets of salt and pepper only (sanitary reasons I expect); we bring a small travel S&P set from our camper. We also bring lots of plastic zip bags in various sizes for leftovers (there are no Tupperware containers). We bring a decent corkscrew - there is one but it is invariably dismal - and a wine rabbit. Of course you could just not drink wine (ha!) or get screw tops. We bring one decent kitchen knife and scissors if we have checked baggage - most of the kitchen knives look to have been well abused and don't hold an edge well. Finally, we bring standard coffee filters (and our own decent coffee); but I actually think they have updated the coffee makers so filters are no longer required. Or maybe I was so tired getting up for rope drop that I was just pouring the coffee straight into the pot :confused3

And that's all I can remember that we pack along. It sounds like a lot I guess, but none of that stuff takes up much space in the bag.

Just a quick addendum: if Gina and any others want to add their favorites, I'll compile a proper list and link to it from the table of contents in post two.

We still needed coffee filters in August (same coffee pots as last year). We also brought the pre-packaged, single-pot bags of Tim Hortons coffee....no scooping or measuring needed.

We also bring dryer sheets, laundry pods,, and dishwasher tabs (you are spot on with the description of the dishwasher soap provided.....its not the best quality).

Next time, I will also bring a Tide stain remover stick. We needed an emergency trip to Walgreens this past vacation for a bottle of Resolve (which we ended up leaving behind...hopefully the cleaning staff took it home).

For the other items we might need, we made use of the Dollar Tree across the street. They were a good resource for the miscellaneous stuff like aluminum foil, full sized salt and pepper shakers, and whatnot. They even carry recognizable toothpaste (Crest, Colgate) and some other basic brand name toiletry items.

Walgreens is right on the corner and good for picking up quality toiletries. I cannot live through a vacation without a supply of decent shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. (I can "rough it" for some things but this is definitely one area where I can't compromise). We are not fans of the little soaps they leave in the bathroom...but they are provided if you want to use them. Walmart is good for this kind of stuff too and its not far away.

We always buy our sunscreen in the States (Walgreens or Walmart) on our arrival day as we can get higher SPF there than here at home.

I also bring pop-up laundry hampers. One goes in the master bedroom and one in the second bedroom. Keeps the laundry in its place until its time to toss a load in the washer and dryer.

Thank you bankr and Gina. That really helps me good idea of what I might need to bring, and what can easily be grabbed while we are down there!:)

We will check in October 19th, it will soon be 2 weeks away! Wondering if I should send in a Diamond Lane request? We booked a timeshare from a friend. The confirmation says it sleeps 8, but is there a request I can make to ensure we have a room with 2 double beds in the second bedroom plus a sofa bed in the living room? Any other requests I should make? I'm clueless... Traveling with 2 adults and 3 kids (4,4,8). Any advice appreciated!

Does anyone have the current ticket price sheet you receive that shows the discount prices if you do the timeshare presentation? I would like to get an idea on what the prices are before our visit end of the month. Thanks!

Gina posted from her August trip here: http://www.disboards.com/showpost.php?p=52196612&postcount=297

Note that the prices are very close to what Undercover Tourist offers without the TS presentation, and you get them in advance so you can register for MDE and get fastpasses in advance.

You won't get a unit with singles in the 2nd BR as your check in is Sunday (the only sleeps 8 with singles are the Courts Uppers with a Saturday check in). You could end up on a 2BR LO (lockoff) in Cascades or Lakes that has a King in the 2nd BR (a 2BR LO gets to 8 by 2*King beds and 2*Sofa beds). In most cases the LO's are split to make 2 1BR's (after all, Sheraton makes a lot more money that way!) so I don't see a high probability of that.

If you are concerned, certainly put in a DL request for the 2 double beds, that is an easy request for them to fulfill (that describes most units in the resort). Considering the younger kids, you might also want to be in a quieter area if the 4yo's are still napping. Being placed right beside one of the main pools could make naps a bit tough if they are light sleepers.

Great tips! Thanks! If I don't end up doing a DL request and leave it up to fate, will it be a problem if we don't check in until later at night (8 or so?).

Well this is just an opinion, but it seems to me that as the check in day wears on, the quality of the room assignments go down. Even if they have everyone assigned to rooms as the day starts, people come in and start making requests or refusing certain units. Presumably these people are swapped into rooms held for other parties. So yes, I think that by later in the evening your chance of getting a less desirable unit increases. Essentially what a DL request is doing is putting you at the very front of the line for the day's requests, even if you are the last one to grab their keys.

I also think that it is good to not get too specific in your request (i.e. specific building or unit); but to keep it general but just specific enough to get roughly where you want to be. Looking at Sunday check ins, most of the North Side (Fountains I&II, Lakes) is good except maybe Lakes building 10, for proximity to the pool. So it might be worth putting in a request for "North Side, but not too close to the pool, 2 double beds in the 2nd bedroom, please." On the South side, Sunday is not the best check in day unless you have a sleeps 6 (Falls - great section). Looking at rest of the Sunday check in buildings, there are 8 good ones, and 8 less desirable (IMO). Palms would be a good section request if you want South side, all the Sunday buildings there are well situated. Most of the Springs and half of the Cascades Sunday buildings are fronting a busy road, either 535, or the main road inside the resort.

Hello there, first-timer here! I'm about to close the deal on a ebay auction for a week ($450 because it's under 60 days, 3500+ 100% feedback, so I feel confident there) and I was directed here by Gina. Read through all 24 pages - woof - and here I am with my requisite questions.

One. We will be checking in on a Friday afternoon and we will be getting a 2 br, but it wasn't indicated if it was sleeps 8 or not. Doesn't matter, there's just two of us! Just wondering what to expect in way of assignments.

Two. I've been reading about the Diamond Lane for requests, but is that just for owners or people staying through Sheraton itself? I know at Bonnet Creek you can only make requests if you're not renting.

Three. If I can't make request in advance, what are my odds do you think about getting a first floor or in a building with an elevator? Partner has knee problems and while she's fine going forward all day, stairs can be a literal pain for her.

That's it for now, I think. I'm really looking forward to staying now that I've read through this all! Thanks for all your help and to Gina for directing me this uh...direction. :wave2:

Hi Kerplop,

Welcome to our little group of Vistana groupies. We hope you enjoy Vistana as much as well all do. Sounds like a good deal for a week.

With a Friday check in you are sure NOT to get either of the sections with single beds in the 2nd BR. The Spas section is Friday only, and is one of the best located sections. You could also be in any one of the other 5 sections with F-S-S check-ins.

DL requests can be done by anyone, as long as you have a reservation number or other way for the resort to identify you (for exchanges you give the membership number). Vistana will bend over backward to accommodate mobility issues. It is certainly easier to Diamond Lane request this and if you are as open as you state it (ground floor or elevator) I wouldn't expect a problem.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

We are going to SVR soon, and I have collected about $15 in quarters for toll booth money while we're there (we're driving to and from the airport, and to Universal one day). I was talking to my stepdad and he said that all of Florida has switched to the Sunpass (?) automatic tolling now, and we won't be able to stop and pay tolls. We'll have to pay them through Alamo (who we're renting the car through). But I thought paying through Alamo entailed buying their (too) expensive tolling package for around $35 instead of just paying the $12 or so in tolls we should pay.

We plan on taking the southerly route out of the airport to go to 417 so that we can avoid I-4. Anyone know if he's right? Do we have to go through Alamo to pay tolls, or are there still places to pay tolls on the highways?

you're fine to opt out of the rental car program and pay cash for the tolls. Go to cfxway.com/TravelersExpressways/FAQs.aspx?category=3, the central FL highway authority's faqs has your questions and the site also includes a toll calculator. Note to all: this site is ONLY for CENTRAL FL TOLL ROADS. Tolls in other parts of the state, such as Miami, are managed by a different authority.

Just wanted to report we're back from our Florida trip and our stay at SVR! We loved it! As soon as I can get some pictures posted to my photobucket, I'll come back and leave a more full review, but we would absolutely stay there again. It was SO CLOSE to everything! We got to the parks faster than Disney buses could, and were also close to Target, Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Walgreens, mini-golf, Publix, DTD, etc, etc! It took us a very short amount of time to get north to US/IOA as well. I thought the location couldn't be beat.

The tip to "always turn right" out of SVR to get to Disney was spot on. We had minimal traffic no matter when we drove. SVR is definitely on our short list of places we'll stay in Orlando.

Glad you enjoyed it! My family owns a unit there and we love it!

We are leaving Friday bound for Vistana (Sunday checkin). I completed my diamond lane requests thanks to the wonderful advice here, and received an email confirmation that it had been received. I'm starting to get die to seriously packing, and wondered what type if coffee maker is in the room? Standard coffee pot? Keurig type? What do I need to bring for coffee supplies? I need my morning cup of joe :)

Unless they have changed since August, they are Proctor Silex standard coffee pots. Bring basket-style filters and your favourite grounds :thumbsup2 .

(and cream and sugar :) )

That is the most common room configuration at the resort, and based on Saturday checkin, could be any section except Spas and Falls. As you read along here, you might get an idea of a section you would like. If you do, try a Diamond Lane request. If you let them place you "run of the house" you will most likely enjoy your setting. All of the sections in the resort are well updated and maintained, and despite the large size of the resort, the amenities are well placed so it doesn't seem that large.
