The Save Money for Disney Thread (Tips Included)

Me either

Details on this please.....is your checking at ING too or just the savings? How do they know what the deposit is and how much to pull? Or do you just say "take $52 every other week"? If that's what you're doing I don't see why you need to renew it as I've had an automatic amount pulled out of my checking by them every week forever now.

Yes that is all I do. His paycheck is the same amount everytime so I round down to the hundred in what I tell them to take out. Nothing too exciting really but my main point is that we truly never miss that money. I don't know why I had to renew it after 6 months but I did. :confused3

Our tips for saving $money for the Disney Fund!!
1. All our loose change goes into a Mickey Mouse bank.
2. We have $150 transferred from our checking to savings every month.
3. We recycle our cans and water bottles.
4. We use Disney's Visa Rewards card. Last week we had $415!!
5. We have a Garage Sale twice a year and easily make $500!!!

ride a bike save on gas!

I've seen a big increase in the amount of people on mopeds. I've also seen a linear increase in the amount of moped related injuries with it :rotfl2:

Still some of those bikes get 90 miles to the gallon, not bad at all.

Ok back again!

This month has been long and my August is setting up to be absolutely soulcrushing with ICU/CCU coverage.

Still, I've been working hard on cutting corners. Got new health insurance, which saved me 107 bucks a month. :) Also joined the rewards program to start collecting points for plane tickets.

Hey Richie I am orginally from Roanoke :) We live in Glen Allen now.. Do you still work at the Va? My dad goes there and I was wondering if maybe he sees you? He goes to the diabetic clinic and I can't remember his primary.. wait yes I can it's Dr Richards.. Could you also send me a PM about how to use google/yahoo to make money surfing? Thanks love this thread and Congrats on becoming a Dr :) My brother in law is a DO in Ohio.. Where did you go to med school? Alan went to School of Ostiopathic in Lewisburg,Wv...

Here's a question related to saving gift cards...

Is it appropriate to ask for Disney gift cards for holidays or birthdays? I don't want to ask grandparents, aunts, uncles, etc. for this for my kids' gifts, but what about my own? I'd rather get that than something I already have enough of.

What do you think? I don't have an opinion one way or the other, but I'm trying to form one! :)

I've been diligently hanging the laundry outside to line dry for the last few weeks. How do I bank that savings? I thought maybe I could compare electrical usage to last year's, then take the difference?

Love this thread! Good luck with the training, Richie!

My Mom thought I was crazy for doing it though. When she asked what I wanted for Christmas last year I told her a disney gift card, she thought I was joking. When the subject came up again months later, I reminded her that I had said I wanted a DGC for our Feburuary trip. Honestly, there was nothing else I needed. So that is what I got! I loved spending it on all the little (and a few big) things at WDW! I say go for it! :woohoo:

I start back at the VA in a week. I will be covering the ICU so I won't have any outpatient contact. I'm still very new so just learning the ropes. PMed you a link to the yahoo thing Lew. Thanks for the encouragement. I am also a graduate from WVSOM in Lewisburg :)

Gotta run! Keep the ideas going gang, don't let this thread die! I need a vacation :woohoo:

Today's update: on home call today. Nephews playing happily.

HPF (yahoo search thing) deposited money in my paypal account today. Yay!
Got one of my rebates back too for buying a PDA.

10% into disney fund.

My bank, Bank of America, has this program where they round up to the dollar you spend and put that change into your savings account. I think they call it "Keep the Change". For example, when I spend $61.55 on gas (yikes- $4.37/gallon!) the amount is rounded up to $62 and the .45 cents automatically goes into my savings. I average about $100 month in my savings with this alone!!

I also cash out my piggy banks, keep laundry money, transfer $50 from every paycheck to savings and sell, sell, sell! I just sold some old clothes on ebay and made $200! I love it! :thumbsup2

I always price about 20% more than I want. That way, I can "bargain," and end up getting what I actually wanted for whatever I'm selling. If I don't have to bargain, BONUS 20%!!! I'm a total Craigslist convert. I love it!

Can't remember where I saw it or read it or heard it (pick one of the above) but the writer banks every $5 bill she gets anywhere with no exceptions. In three years or so, she had accumulated something like $12,000 if I remember right. She even asked someone to take back the two fives that she was supposed to receive for change on a purchase one day because she knew if she got fives she would have to save them and she couldn't afford it that day. She got a ten instead and, therefore, didn't have to save them. She must have been extremely disciplined and not living from paycheck to paycheck to make this work. If Disney travelers knew a year in advance that they were going, it might be possible to save some $$$ for the trip by using her strategy although it might not amount to $4000. Just an idea.

I too have alot of toys i could sell on Craiglist but I do not have a clue of how to start. Can someone direct me to a specific/trustworthy site or give or give me explicit instructions on how to use Craiglist. Thanks

Made a small update to the first post. Made it easier for people to sign up for the yahoo search thing without PMing me (takes forever for me to check my mail when I'm working 80 hours a week). Will look on finding a decent Craigslist guide.

Liked the Keep the Change idea thru bank of america. I wish suntrust would do something along those lines hehe :)

ok, off to format my new hard drive.

It's super, super easy. Go to the site, and create an account. There's a link on the left that says "Post to Classifieds." Once you're there, you just choose "For Sale" and pick a category. Write your ad, upload pics if you have them (there's room for four pictures) and post. Easy peasy!

If you still want a web site, just Google "How to use Craigslist."

Great thread! I am hoping we can go again next May. Currently I have:

Current Savings for Disney: $190 (in an ING Savings Account for maximum interest!)

Current Disney Rewards from Visa: $54

I have a Vacation Fund jar right inside the door - whenever we come home, all change goes into the jar.

Since I am self-employed and paychecks aren't consistent, I just put into the fund what I can. However, I have a rule that I can only put into the vacation fund what I put into my long-term savings. So if $50 goes into the retirement fund, no more than $50 can go into the vacation fund.

I just started the vacation account last month, so I'm pretty happy to already have almost $200!! That is half a plane ticket!! :lmao:

I think I could do a scaled back version of this and save all $1 bills! The more I think about it, the more I think I will start doing it!!

I love this thread! I just started the sunshine rewards program. I'm not really sure what I am doing right now with it but hopefully I will soon and I can start making some $$$$.:cool1:
