The Running Thread --2025

QOTD: Imagine you had a running shoe deal - so you could get all the shoes you needed for free, but only for one brand. What brand would you choose?
ATTQOTD: This is a Sophie's Choice if I've ever seen one. In the end, as much as I love my Saucony Speed 3 and Pro 4, I think I'd have to go with Asics, keep my Kayano, Metaspeed, and Noosa, and find one of their tempo shoes to fill in for the Speed 3s. If Saucony had a easy day long run shoe that worked for me as well as the Kayano, though, this probably would've gone the other way.

Oh this is a tough one. My last two shoes have been Asics and I've loved them, but I also don't love some of their newer shoe designs. I also loved NB until I didn't. So I kinda have a history of being abandoned by shoe companies.

I'm gonna go Brooks because I want the runDisney shoes. I haven't run in Brooks in 5+ years so who knows if they'd be any good for running ... but if they're free, I can wear them as everyday shoes and use money to buy shoes to run in. (Is that cheating?)

Attqotd: New Balance. It’s not that I’ve been blown away by them, but out of everything I’ve tried they have been the least problematic.

Speaking of that and a recent conversation here, I decided to do a 7 mile trail run in my several years old Altra Lone Peaks. I didn’t like them then, and I kinda enjoyed them this run…until the next day, the lack of rock plate or any real cushioning left my heal a bit sore form banging through rock gardens on the way down.

Going to check out some options at SLRC tomorrow, since I’m using my Sunday long run as an excuse to travel(<10 miles) to go trail run

ATTQOTD: easy one - Altra. It’s the only brand I’ve worn for years! When I ran out of the Torin 5s that treated me so well and the 6 and 7 were awful, I did try some other shoes, but they all caused me so much pain, I was ready to give up running altogether. But I found Altra’s Escalante 4 and Experience Flow, and though neither is quite as perfect as the Torin 5, they’re good enough to keep me running a while longer. I need that very low drop and foot-shape: my toes refuse to be jammed together in a pointy shoe!

ATTQOTD: I use a mix of shoes, not on purpose but it has been
I started running just 3yrs ago, so coming from couch I went to a FleetFeet to get the scan and shoes recommendation, it was a Brooks glycerin half size up from regular shoes.

About 3 weeks after -out of curiosity- went to another location and got recommended Holla Cliffton 9, wide and a full size up

About six months later, I went again in another city.. got recommended Brooks adrenaline… three weeks later NB -I dont recall number because those I didn't buy

So.. I guess it is more about comfort on my end and maybe sales target (?) on theirs…

It could be worse. Back in the days of the old click-wheel iPods, my parents managed to switch theirs to Japanese. Everything from menu labels to song titles were switched over. I’m still not sure how I managed to fix it for them.
My 5yo accidentally switched one of his Sonic video games into Russian. It took my husband 10 minutes to figure out how to switch it back.

Can anyone comment on how badly LiveTrack drains your watch/phone battery? I have been considering using it for my long trail runs, but ending up in the woods with both a dead watch and a dead phone make me hesitant.

A casual google search tells me it could drain it by 50% more, but doesn't indicate if that's the watch or the phone or both that experience the greater drain.

FWIW, I have a vivoactive 4s, have the pulse ox turned off/display brightness turned down some/shorter backlight timer, and use my phone for music

I used it during the marathon and my watch still had tons of battery life at the end. You know how long it took me. :D I have a Forerunner 265s.

Edit: My phone did get very low on battery, but I was also texting and taking lots of videos. When I realized my battery was almost 20 percent, I pretty much put my phone away except for music, and it lasted the rest of the race without getting below 20. Next time I plan on bringing a small magsafe charger with me.

I have taken an airtag with me on runs. My wife says it only updates about every 5 min, but if I go missing she will at least have a rough idea where to look :).

For the question of the day depends how far back in the catalog I can go. Mizuno if I can grab shoes from several years ago the wave inspire 17 is one of my all time favorite shoes. If it's off of today's catalog then it's adidas. I have three different pairs right now and hoping to catch a sale for another pair or two this fall of their newer offerings.
