The Running Thread --2025

I can see that. I actually applied to volunteer this year since I live in driving distance. I know it went through as I got a confirmation and it said I'd hear something by April 1, but I never got any further communication and nothing ever showed up in my BAA account.
I think I read that they turned away 2000 people that registered but weren't needed. But they should have sent a “sorry, but” message. I think the first time I tried to volunteer I didn’t get in but got a response.

I just wish Boston was not part of the Majors, or wish it wasn't required to run it to earn the 6-star finisher, now that Sydney has been added. I've always been one to say "never say never", but I can confidently say that the chances of me ever qualifying are slim to none, downhill or not, nor do I want the pressure of the steep fundraising requirement.

I have the same thoughts about Boston.

You know you're a Disney runner when you're looking up logistics and transportation for another race and think "I'll probably need to get up around 4 am. That's not too early!"
I kind of did that for Honolulu. I’m doing the 10k and it starts with the marathon at 5am. I thought that should be easy, Disney starts at 5am.

Looking for opinions on a watch. i know it gets discussed often but i might have a slightly different criteria so looking for opinions.

I have worked at my company for 25 years, so i can get a gift. There are some rules around this, but i think i have decided to get a new watch because it meets all those criteria. The most important being cost. I get a good amount of money, so this watch question means i don't have to worry about the price. My options are the new Garmin Forerunner 970 or the Apple watch ultra 2. I currently have a Garmin Forerunner 935, i think i got it in 2018, maybe 2017. i have had no issues with it. i like it. Only because i have to get a gift i thought about a new watch.

Pros for Garmin. I probably know how to use it since i have had the 935. It is more of a watch for activities then being a health watch or something to replace a phone. It will be great for running, walking, swimming and hiking. CONs for Garmin. I dont use many of the extra data features, i just want good GPS for running and doing intervals and then something to count laps for swimming.

Pros for apple. More of a health tracker and tied more to my phone. Looks better. Cons for Apple. I think the GPS capabilities have gotten better but it was not a very good run watch. I would have to learn the watch.

@camaker i know you have both and i think wear both for running, thoughts? @FFigawi been watching the DC rainmaker reviews and i am still torn.

I feel like the watches do different things. i am leaning towards Apple, because my running is struggling with my knees (that is a different post for next week). I want the garmin because it is familiar and i know its gps is better.

Help a girl out.

With the AppleWatch, I think you would need an additional app to do intervals (if we’re talking run/walk).
Also, for me, the Apple Watch Ultra is too big for my wrist.

Also consider battery life. I've never owned one, but my understanding is the Apple Watch needs charging a lot more often.

I have the Apple Watch Ultra 2. I like it because it can do most things a phone can, so I don't have to worry about bringing my phone with me when I run. The battery is also much better than the regular Apple Watches (though I think most Garmins still last significantly longer). I charge mine every day, but I could probably make it through two days if necessary. Once I got used to it, I quite liked the bigger screen as well.

You can set up various workouts using the Apple Fitness app on the watch, which would presumably work for R/W/R intervals as well, as well as all kinds of options for swimming, strength, core, walking, hiking, etc. Some people prefer using other apps, but I've always been fine with the native app.

I haven't generally had issues with the GPS. The Ultras have whatever upgraded GPS tracking that's supposed to be at least as good as Garmin's. It's good enough to tell which side of the street I'm on and if I switch when I'm going out/coming back, so that seems fine for me.

Im adding more info…
I run with a Garmin 965 and an AppleWatch 10 (which is also my daily watch).
The AppleWatch GPS pretty much matches the distance of my Garmin. The battery life gets through a whole day and my hour or two run in the morning. If I have a marathon to run, I will throw it on the charger before the race to make sure it is fully charged, but I can get through a 5 hour marathon and still have battery life left. I charge my AppleWatch every morning while I shower and get ready - so 45 minutes to an hour, and that is enough to fully charge it. My Garmin, I probably charge once every week or two, but I also don’t wear it throughout the day.
I don’t listen to music while I run, so that is not using watch battery power, and I don’t have the cell version of the AppleWatch.
Pretty much when I run, I just start the run with the fitness app on the AppleWatch and let it go until I finish. With my Garmin, I may use the run/walk alerts on it, and I will pause when I get stopped at traffic lights. I usually only look at data from the Garmin.

I have an Apple Watch Ultra and a Garmin Fenix 7. The AW Ultra is my daily wear watch and I love all the smart features it brings to the table in that role. I wear both watches while running, though, and use only the Garmin to actually track my runs. I much prefer the data and customization capabilities that it has when it comes to activity tracking. The Apple Watch is used for my audiobooks and as a safety device (cellular and texting capability). I wouldn't worry about the battery life of the AW Ultra. I've worn it on my longest ultras and never come close to exhausting its battery, with the obvious caveat that I wasn't using its GPS. When I have used its GPS (lunchtime walks, primarily), I haven't noticed any issues and it's always given consistent readings when used for the same routes. Not sure what else to add, other than that I have no inclination to replace the AW Ultra as my daily wear, but I also have no inclination to use it as my primary fitness tracker, either.

this is exactly my concern. i do have a solve i could use the 935 as my activity watch, but then i have to make sure it is charged. i am afraid i will forget since i only run 3 days a week (except the last 4 weeks, again a post for next week after i see my PT again).
