The Running Thread --2025

January Running
Runs: 17
Miles: 59.41
Avg HR: 139
Avg Pace: 10:31

I'm (mostly) back! November I managed 1.5 miles due to ear infections, pneumonia, pleural effusion, and norovirus.

December, I was able to get back on the treadmill without coughing and gasping for air. I managed 31.9 miles that month, then got a slighter less prolific version of the norovirus on Christmas Eve.

But, January was good. All on the treadmill.

January Walking
Walks: 2
Distance: 1.73
Time: 0:36:15

So cold and snowy! We don't have sidewalks (or a road that is plowed very well), so January was mainly a bust for walking. February is starting off nicely though!

January Strength Training
Sessions: 11
Time: 4:21:16

My goal for 2025 was to start back to strength training, and I stayed on track throughout all of January! The real problem starts in softball season, but my kids will be on the same rec softball team this year, so I can cut my evenings at the field in half (hopefully).

ATTQOTD:
Olympics, and Barkley Marathons.

I'll casually check in with the world majors, but the whole "thing" with Barkley is just fascinating from the skills needed to navigate, the training, the sleep deprivations, the mini documentaries that come out from it...the stories about runners being found well off-course talking to trashcans....it holds my attention well. I also love that it's a "race" about FINISHING, and even the DNFs are generally pretty incredible feats.

ATTQOTD: London Marathon Ran it twice over 20 years ago and would love to do so again.

The coverage is on for over 5 hours on the BBC and it’s traditional in our house to watch it all from the elite coverage to the later hours hearing all the stories of the causes people are running for charity for.

ATTQOTD: I'm sure this won't be a popular answer, but as a general rule if I'm not running in a race I don't care about it or follow it. The only slight variation on this would be that I do loosely follow along with RunDisney race weekends to see if there are any changes being made that might impact my next RunDisney weekend.
Same. I follow along here to hear about how you guys did during a rD race, but otherwise I don't know when the other races happen, who won, what happened, etc. Other than football and baseball, I'm a poor spectator.

I saw a bunch of super fast runners in my neighborhood this morning, people I didn't recognize, and then I saw a van with Brooks/Hansons on it - and apparently this is a thing? And they're possibly staying in my neighborhood? Way to make me feel unproductive while doing my three mile easy run this morning. :D

ETA: This is one of the dudes I saw! Was running in the opposite direction when I was running up my street, then blew past me when I was running along the main road, which meant he circled my entire smaller neighborhood in the time it took me to leave it. :D https://www.instagram.com/jflavinp/?g=5

Yes. This is local to me. Keith and Kevin Hanson started this program 20 or so years ago and it's still going. Des Linden trained with them for a while. The brothers have 4 stores, and in the past, some of the runners have worked there, while living together locally. Once I had a massage at one of the stores from one of their runners who was trained as a masseur--you know they're going to understand your issue! They are really nice guys.

They have always headed south in the winter to run--they used to have a few of their runners doing the half at Marathon Weekend, not these days though.

Oh, I had a random funny thing happen this weekend. My wife took the dogs for a walk this weekend. They attracted a good bit of attention on their trek, as English bulldogs do. My wife came home and told me I'm apparently known throughout the neighborhood as "that runner guy." I guess it's good to be recognized...

ATTQOTD: I've come to love watching elite running, so I'll generally put on whatever is available. I watched ALL of the Olympic track coverage last year. 😂 I'm so sad that the Diamond League is moving to FloTrack this year - $6/month for Peacock was wayyyy more reasonable than $30/month for FloTrack! 😣 Maybe I'll be able to find some clips on YouTube...

January: 59 miles

I was happy with myself for finishing January strong. I got sick the first week of January, missed about a week and was worried I'd get out of my habits. I felt good with how I tapered a bit for my first RD race, the DL half on Feb 2.

Also now I have a lot of (good) feelings I need to sort out about that race, and I need a new goal. I've been looking forward to this race for 6 months.

ATTQOTD: Barkley, Comrades, and Boston I watch/follow every year. I'll also tune in to coverage of Western States if I remember it's on.

I'm leaving the Olympics in their own category because I watch as much of both the Winter and Summer Olympics as I can. Having 10+ channels of live coverage available now is such a huge improvement from the 3-hour prime time highlights show we used to get.

I never think about anyone noticing my running, especially when I walk to the entrance of the neighborhood as my warm-up, but apparently people do notice because more than once I’ve had someone stop when I’m out in the yard and ask about the running and the magnets on the back of my truck.

I had something similar happen recently! I had been traveling a lot this fall so I wasn’t home to run my normal schedule. I saw one of the owners who walks their dog as part of a group I see in my park often. We say hi as always and he says “we were just talking about how we haven’t seen the lady who runs recently!”

I love this group, I call them doggypalooza. They have a great bunch of dogs that I love getting kisses from. Little do they know, I miss them too when I don’t see them for awhile!

While I do watch Boston (since one of our "local" channels is from there) and follow the NY marathon, the Olympics are my jam. I was always into them as a kid since I was a competitive swimmer and had friends who were gymnasts, but experiencing them in person in SLC in 2002 took things to a whole new level. I watch as much as I can of both winter and summer games, and I also love that there's a way to get all the feeds live now.

@garneska @camaker @Mr Incredible 221 @GuinnessRunner @princesspirateandrunner @Fischstick @Novatrix @GADisneyDad14 and any other Georgia people, people from nearby states, or anybody who wants to travel for a short race! The LAKE HARTWELL DAM RUN is on!!!! The project to refurbish and replace the turbines has been postponed at least until next year. Thanks to the government freezing spending ??? Regardless, the 5k and 10k races will go on as usual, and DH is race director. Registration will be up on RunSignup.com in a few days.

The 5k starts on the SC side and runs across the dam into GA. The 10K starts in GA, runs down the highway and across the bridge over the Savannah River, then turns back to cross the dam and into the finish line back at Big Oaks Recreational Area. A beautiful view both ways. The races run concurrently.
The 10K has traditionally been my POT race for Disney. I’m so excited and relieved.

they used to send a team up to my tiny town for the team marathon/marathon relay race as well (or so i've been told....they haven't been here since my kids started running in it with the XC team.)
