The Running Thread --2025

January Running:
Total Distance: 59 mi
Average Pace: 9:58/mi

My 2025 running started off on a high note - first run of the year was at Castaway Cay! I wish I could start every year that way! January was cold and icy at home so the rest of my runs were on the treadmill and never over 4 miles(!), which is why my average pace is lower than my normal. I'm hoping to actually run outside in February and get in something longer.

January Running: 42.3 miles

I'm going to keep it short this month. January was a disaster. Only 42 miles and 27 of them were during Dopey at Marathon Weekend. Apparently I have tendinitis/inflammation in my hamstring near the attachment point. All I can do is walk and strengthening exercises, as tolerated. It'll be 2-3 more weeks of that before reevaluating a possible return to running.

I’m skipping my runs this weekend due to my Achilles’ issue. There’s quite a tender spot and since it’s right where it bends when I walk/run, I’m trying to be careful. Instead of running for an hour, I did Peloton classes for an hour. I’m trying to get the tenderness to clear up and better to do it now than cry about it in a couple weeks.

When I had my Achilles issue last year (by which I mean fall 2023 😬), what helped the most was single-leg calf raises on a stair, with pretty heavy weight, and going to the chiropractor for a few SoftWave sessions. Hope yours clears up soon!

Yup, I’m in PT where I’m getting a lot of dry needling, and he gave me some exercises to do, including those single leg calf raises. I’m doing every exercise religiously.

Welcome to the 2025 Edition of the Running Thread!

We talk all things running (and some things not!).. and of course, we throw in some Disney too.

ALL runners/walkers/wheelers are welcome to share, read, chat and encourage. We are a supportive community and welcome all to join! The group ranges from brand new runners to Boston Qualifiers & ultra-marathoners; there is a virtual seat for everyone- don't be shy to jump in!

We will post periodic "Questions of the Day" (QOTD) and encourage everyone to participate. Please also feel free to share upcoming races and post-race reports.

Without further ado.... let's get this thread running!

Let's do this!
Hey all.
We're coming across in August and this time staying at the Dolphin.
Anyone any decent routes (that don't involve an out and back along the E Buena Vista Dr)?
(and yep, I'm aware how hot/humid it is and do regularly train in the heat (despite living in England lol)) 😁
Hopefully I'll get some tri training in as the Dolphin appears to have a decent pool that opens early too.
Actually, with that in mind. Has anyone hired a bicycle there?

Lots of folks will run around crescent lake and even to HS but it's not a particularly long route so you may have to repeat it several times for any significant mileage. I did find a 5Kish route on Strava that adds a loop around the swan: https://strava.app.link/ITMvfa1MEQb

Unfortunately, WDW has a lot of wide open roads and few sidewalks so there isn't any longer routes. Likewise, there's really nowhere safe to cycle on property so you'll need to rely on the hotel gym for that.

You can also add on to the Crescent Lake run with some distance on Epcot Resorts Blvd. There is sidewalk most of the way--think I was able to pop into parking lot to avoid the road in a couple of spots.

Ouch. Sorry to hear. Just take it slow on the recovery.
Oh, and get some of the thin flexible ice packs if you don't have any. I spent a lot of time sitting on ours.

One nutrition tidbit to share: Based on some earlier discussions on fueling and the need for a mix of carbs and protein immediately after a race, I bought some peanut butter and honey Uncrustables to try, but no running of late to try them after. However, on Saturday mornings, I put in some long hours at the hangar and usually don't start back toward home until around 2 pm, so fairly hungry when I do. I decided yesterday was a good time to try one of the Uncrustables as my lunch.
I can report that the "honey" isn't honey so much as a gelatin-base honey filling (like in a jelly filled donut), which I guess is to keep from soaking the bread like real honey does. Anyway, I took it out of the freezer when I left at 8 am and let it thaw while I was working and ate it around 1 pm. Tasted fine (not that I'll be very particular about taste after a half or full) and it went down OK with about 1/3 a bottle of water.
I'm calling it a win and will be using them, along with a banana, as my post-race fueling. YMMV

QOTD: Which race do you most look forward to following along that you are not running in?

ATTQOTD: I have two that are both spring races. The first is the Boston Marathon with a close second the Barkley Marathons. Two very different events with very different type news coverage, but exciting either way!

QOTD: Which race do you most look forward to following along that you are not running in?
ATTQOTD: I'm sure this won't be a popular answer, but as a general rule if I'm not running in a race I don't care about it or follow it. The only slight variation on this would be that I do loosely follow along with RunDisney race weekends to see if there are any changes being made that might impact my next RunDisney weekend.

What about the summer Olympic events?

ATTQOTD: Definitely Boston. I will watch the race, if possible. Yes on the Olympics. I will check in on some other races if they spark interest. Heck, last night I watched some of the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix from Boston.

And since you didn't call out running specifically (😉), I will add some from cycling: the 3 major GrandTours (tour de France, Giro d'Italia, Vuelta d'Espana) and most all Cyclocross races. Oh, and the Road Classics. Still on my bucket list to catch some in person--especially cyclocross.
