The Running Thread--2024

Has anybody had experiences with getting a stitch in your side while running? During my MP Tempo run last night, everything was going great until Mile 6 when I started experiencing this searing pain in my right side. It got so bad that I had to walk. Fortunately, the pain went away after a few minutes. Once it passed, I was able to resume my run at MP until Mile 10 when it came back. Thankfully, this was the end of my workout anyway.
Yes, and DD used to get them all the time when she first started running. As @Zutroy said, it is likely due to breathing. Other factors like dehydration or just having had a meal can contribute.

One of DD’s coach/teacher had given her a series of things to do to help besides breathing (try telling a 10yo to breathe 😳): Raise your arms to the sky, touch your toes,… I will ask her if she remembers the rest later and will edit back.

ETA: That was it for the exercises 🙌🏻 although she wanted to add that the root cause might also be that someone is running too fast for their current fitness/training level.

It happens sometimes. I can usually get rid of it by doing some of @Zutroy 's belly breathing and stretching that side of my body by bending my arm over my head and holding my opposite ear (which will make you look kind of goofy, but if it helps, who cares? 😂)

QOTD: As we get to the end of the year, what have been some of your running highlights/favorites of 2024?

ATTQOTD: It has been a good year for running! I loved watching the Olympics after a year or two of actually following elite athletics; it made me much more invested. Some of my best running things this year were...

Favorite race (as a runner): Either the Princess 10K or Marine Corps Marathon. I can't decide.
Favorite race (as a spectator): There were so many good ones! Maybe the men's 1500 final or the women's marathon at the Olympics.
Favorite new running gear item: My Naked running belt. I can fit lots in it for longer races.
Favorite everyday shoes: Asics Novablast 4. Every time I put them on, my feet feel happy.
Favorite race shoes: Asics Metaspeed Edge Paris. I love them.
Favorite random opportunity: Seeing the US Olympic marathon trials in person! I even got to meet up with @nancipants there!
Favorite non-race event: Parkrun! I did it for the first time this year and it's awesome.

What's stood out for you this year?

ATTQOTD: while It hasn't been the best year for running overall, I do have some highlights:
  • Running at Disneyland for the first time, and picking up my fastest Disney 10K and Half overall times, and my fastest Disney 5K by moving time
  • Setting a new 10 mile PR at Goldy's Run in April
  • Getting my first Coast-to-Coast medal after Springtime Suprise
  • Finding a new favorite running shoe in Brooks Ghosts

ATTQOTD:

1. Spectating part of the Paralympic Triathlon during our visit to Paris.
2. The Muppets-themed W&D 5K was SO much fun!
3. It was nice getting back to the DL races back in January and doing my version of not-quite-Dopey to Dumbo, even with all the issues.

EDIT TO ADD: Spectating the marathon at WDW last year was SO much fun!

ATTQOTD: It's been a pretty good year of running overall. Some of the highlights have been:

  • Favorite race experience has to have been the W&D 5k. The Muppets theme was just so much fun. Especially the Swedish Chef pre-race show.
  • Completing Dopey#7
  • Completing marathon #16 after running my 1st at Marathon Weekend 2016 as a one-time bucket list item
  • Finishing my 5th race of 100k+ distance

Favorites race: RUN SLC 10k. It was nice to be in a small local race at a distance I had never done before. The wind after the turn was laugh inducingly difficult, and literal branches were flying at us but it made thr slog interesting.

Not sure what to call it, but during my injury recovery I’m stoked I didn’t entirely blow up my training and put back on 40-50#.

Happy I ran on the cruise ship and castaway 5k. The bonus sunrise run in Old San Juan was enchanting.

ATTQOTD: I'm past the "highlights" phase of my running career, but I guess two things from this year that made me happy: Running the Swedish Chef 5k with some "old" WISH buddies dressed in costume--a first for me. It was great fun.

Also--and NOT to be underappreciated--I was injury free the whole year. Not just running injury, but also Cervical Disc injury free. That is something that has become rarer as I age. Guess the lack of heavy training/racing is what I need. Hope to keep this going into 2025.

Favorite race (as a runner): I only do the WDW race weekends, and the MW half was cut, W&D was one of my worst ever race experiences… but the Springtime Surprise 10K was a blast! Costume was on point, weather was perfect, course entertainment was fantastic.
Favorite race (as a spectator): In person: WDW Marathon. On TV: women’s Olympic Marathon.
Favorite new running gear item: Thermal tights with a solid pocket game.
Favorite everyday shoes: Altra Escalante 4
Favorite race shoes: ASICS Cumulus 25, but only for 10K or shorter. I’ve yet to find anything that doesn't punish me for longer distances.
Favorite non-race event: Does YouTube count?! Loved watching UTMB via livestream.
