The Running Thread--2024

Do the Injunji also help with black toes? I admit, I am reluctant to even consider marathon distance in the future because of that problem.
I don't know why a month and a half later it popped into my head that I should have added this to my reply. 🤷‍♂️

Anyway, this may be obvious but another factor in avoiding black toes is keeping your toenails trimmed short.

November 2024

Running: 14h 46m, 91.5 miles
Strength/mobility: 5h 17m
Total: 20h 13m

That's actually more than I was expecting for the month after a marathon. Next month I start training for Princess, so I should be back to more typical mileage.

And of course, happy Thanksgiving, fellow Americans! Who else bought themselves more than one pair of new shoes for Black Friday? 🙈

November totals-

Run- 35.2 miles. I still notice the psoas, but it’s almost gone away. I have made the decision to accept that runs of 3 miles or less be done on the treadmill, as it’s less planning, safer, and results in less laundry. It’s so damn boring. I can’t watch anything because the ledge to put a screen is at my waist. But whatevs.

Workout time is down significantly, due to not working out the entire time on my vacation, which I am now paying for, and my daughter’s wish to quit Jiu Jitsu, which while moderately heartbreaking, is her choice and ski lessons are about to ramp up anyway.

I did finally get my Castaway 5k medal, while following a recommended course that was 3.6 miles.

I haven’t been following this thread lately, but we’re headed to Cocoa Beach for Space Coast. I’m not running this year, but DH and DS27 are doing the full. Are any other DISers going to be there?
Not this year, but I’m hoping to make it my A race next year. Looks like the weather will be amazing!

Thanks, it is a very good point to reinforce for all runners reading this board!

I still don’t quite understand what happened. All toenails were well trimmed, this was my seventh marathon so I knew better.

My toes swelled and maybe it unsealed the toe nails from under. I lost both long toes’ nails (which I had before but previously it was one per marathon, not both), one middle toe’s nail and one of my big toe stayed put but had black under the nail (and now is an awful marble yellow/grey).

Racing, marathon in particular, have had no appeal for me since then.

Your post reopened the question in my mind and I reviewed my history. Shoes might be the culprit… otherwise its age and I don’t want to go there 😂

Analysis for my marathons:
2019 Asics Nimbus 19 Volt - np
2020 Asics Nimbus 20 Mickey - np
2021 Asics Nimbus 22 Jafar - np
2022 Asics Nimbus 23 Steamboat M - np
2023 Asics Nimbus 24 Ottawa - Left Long Toe, nail lost
2023 Asics Nimbus 24 Ottawa - Right Long Toe, nail lost
2024 Asics Nimbus 25 Eclipse - Toe nails debacle!

What changed between Nimbus 23- and 24… The tongue and upper shoe. Those were kept for the 25 but completely different stacking. Conclusion, if I run another marathon, I need another type of shoe. Thank you 😊

November totals:

Running--6.1mi
Cross training (aka refereeing): 27 hours and change (I forgot my watch one night, and I worked 3 games/3 hours that night)

December will see a low week for XT, then a very heavy week of it, followed by another light week, and then winter break at school which means no basketball games. To say that running-specific-training has been a struggle would be an understatement.

November running:
Miles: 71.1
Time: 13:09:52

A little disappointed in the month. I have some niggles in my leg/hip that are causing me to cut back the number of days I run. I seem to be tolerating every other day but it’s keeping my mileage lower than I would like going into MW. So….I’ve decided to pull a DNS for the half marathon ☹️ I’m bummed but I like running more than races so I don’t want to risk a more serious problem if I run the half undertrained. I feel relieved that I can really listen to my body and run when I’m feeling good and rest when I’m not, no pressure.

On a good note, I ended the month with a run at Saratoga Springs 😍

NOV 2024 Running Total: Activities: 22 Distance: 119.53 miles Time: 21:41:47
This included training runs of three 5ks, a 15k, a half marathon, and two record breakers of my longest run ever (15.6 miles), alsb o three RWR "easy runs" (90/30) while I've been under the weather this week.

November was training weeks 7-10 of 16, but at the end of this month I caught a cold and have been doing my training runs out of order to keep it easy.

December will be training weeks 11-14 of 16. The peak weeks will be 11-12, so I hope I recover quick enough to get in all the training without having to delay the taper before the Marathon.

I typically only use one pair of sneakers at a time. My current Saucony Endorphin Speed 3 came up on 300 miles, so I ordered a new pair for $99. I took them out on a couple of runs and they feel great, but I'm reading that some people suggest racing in shoes that only have about 25 miles on them. So I'm wondering if I actually need two pairs of sneakers to get me thru this Marathon block. Uggg!!! Another Endorphin Speed 3 for $99 or go all out for Endorphin Pro 3 $170, Pro 4 $222, or Elite $275 ?!? This will be my one and only marathon. I ran a half at just over 2 hours.

November Total: 3.3 miles (2 runs)
Better than the 0 miles from October but I still can't get myself to a place where I will consistently make time to run. My building just opened up a new gym with much better treadmills so I think that will help. Goal for December is to run at least once a week most weeks (I will be on vacation for a few days so TBD what will happen then) and if I can do that, then maybe I can start to get back on track. We will see. I've thought about registering for a local race to force myself to run but I really hate local races, so I guess I just gotta figure out if I can make it back to runDisney at some point.

November Running

WDW Marathon training going smoothly. Garmin is telling me this was my highest mileage month since October 2022, which I find hard to believe. But, given that I got sidelined with a really painful ITB exactly 6 weeks out from my last marathon (Chicago 2023), which cut my peak month for that race *way* back, I guess it's possible. Fortunately I still managed to finish that race. This weekend is 6 weeks out from WDW Marathon and I'm injury-free right now (knock wood) so I'm feeling optimistic! My hip and quad on my left side (the side that always bothers me) have been tight and barking a little, but I really believe that my recent commitment to strength training, minimal as it is, has helped stave off ITB issues this time -- so far. I'm really hoping to step up strength training another level after the race in January, so I am a bit more resilient to harder training as I get older.

November Running
180.4 miles
7:53 avg/mile

I ran the Pittsburgh 10 Miler at the beginning of the month. Practically perfect race conditions: upper 30s, sunny, light breeze. I didn't have any expectations since I was three weeks removed from a marathon. Legs felt pretty good for the most part. Finished in 1:08:30 with a negative split.

This will be my one and only marathon. I ran a half at just over 2 hours.
Yeah. Let's have a show of hands from everyone that said that before running their next marathon, or a Goofy, or a Dopey....
BTW, kudos on a good time for a half.

As for shoes: you need more shoes. Why? Well, because more shoes....
Seriously, a second pair of shoes is a good thing for two reasons: (1) to have a backup pair in case of the unexpected, (2) most of us alternate pairs so that the foam has a chance to recover between runs.

I have about 4 pair in the rotation these days and rotate between them for my training runs. Keeps from getting any single pair too worn or too stinky.
YMMV

There's no need to run races in shoes with that little mileage on them. As long as you're not too close to the end of your shoes' lifespan you're good to go for the race.

As for this being your one and only marathon, good luck with that. 😀

A solid month with Wine and Dine and getting ready for Dopey. Had 5 long runs - 2 ten milers and 3 HM. Actually the first month I’ve ever averaged under 9/mile. It’s interesting to me because I’ve kind of stopped speed workouts and just run to enjoy running, maybe just dumb luck but I’ll take the “W”

I know ITBS all too well. Specific strength training was a game changer, as was activation exercises before I head out for my run. I sometimes still just head out instead of doing the extra steps, but I need to be good as my mileage increases for Princess.

November Totals
69.97 miles in 16:49:52

Despite missing a bunch of runs for various reasons (including my first-ever case of post-Disney crud) this was my highest mileage month since September 2022. I started with the Wine & Dine races and finished with a half marathon-length training run on Thanksgiving that was just 2 and a half minutes slower than my unofficial half PR.

I would add to the good advice from @camaker and @Mr_Incr3dible that the Speed 3 seem to be particularly resilient compared to other shoes. I have a pair with 650+ miles on them and they still feel fine, in contrast to other models that I've retired after 400-500 miles.
