The Running Thread--2024

These days oil changes in your insoles are much easier. The filter is on top of the insert. Pump the old oil out, change the filter, new oil and filter in. Torque to spec. At least with euro inserts. Don’t know for sure about JDM or Freedom insoles.
I had no idea what was going on in this thread and had to go back a few pages to see how we got to oil changes lol. I actually had to google the subject as I did not know the pumping the oil out is a preferred method with some makers. Seems strange to me but again, I'm not a engineer either lol.

QOTD time: How long do you have from when the weather starts cooling down till your first runs with snow?

ATTQOTD: Unfortunately we rarely get snow, so nice running weather is typically from October till mid May.

These days? Who knows! On 10/15 we could see snowflakes mixed in with the rain. And 2 days ago (10/21) it was 80 outside! Where I live we usually get our first snow-flakes-landing-on-the-ground this week….the 2nd to last week of October. This usually doesn’t start to “stick” until mid-to-late November. However, our USDA ag. zone got updated this spring and we moved a whole zone warmer. The past few years the snow hasn’t stayed until late December or early January…and this past winter we barely had any snow at all! It was a “brown winter” and we joked that this is what living in Ohio must feel like. This is coming from a place that used to average 150+in of snow/winter.

I don’t run in the snow because of narrow shoulders on the roads I use, bad drivers, and because I’m a delicate flower.

Very similar here. We had a hard freeze last week and a foot of snow in the mountains, and today it is crazy windy and 75.

Normally we get "stick season" about this time of year, where all the leaves fall and we may get snow but it won't stay on the ground long. This lasts until around Christmas, when the snow starts to stick and doesn't melt until April. Then we move to "mud season" and all the dirt roads turn into bogs.

But nothing is normal now. Last year we didn't get a standing snow layer until mid January, and our biggest two storms were in March.

I'm glad everyone who has had close encounters with vehicles lately is ok!

I live in a rural area without sidewalks (or shoulders really), so I drive to two local rails-to-trails to run (or the local HS track on the weekends / when school is not in session). Does it add anywhere from 15-40 minutes to my running excursions? Yes. Does it add miles to my car? Also yes. But, for me, it's worth it.

As for snow, I'm in PA and wore capris and a long-sleeve one day last week when it was 40, but now I'm back to shorts and tank tops. I'm hoping not to see snow until Christmas!

You're preaching to the choir. My wife and I brought our Florida babies (14 and 16 at the time) to Germany to see the Christmas markets two years ago and it was colder in South Florida than it was in Munich. We were there for two weeks and didn't see any snow whatsoever.

Attqotd: I actually shifted workouts around last week so I could run in the snowfall last Friday. It’s been a late start on the snow this year too.

ATTQOTD: Moreso than snow, it's the temps that will keep me inside. I'm fortunate to live near a bike path that the city clears in the winter so if we do get a lot of snow, there's a safe place for me to run within a few hours. However, there are times in Jan/Feb where the temps don't get above 0 and I'm not subjecting myself to that.
