The Running Thread--2024

In other non-weather related news. I haven’t run since last Tuesday. It feels like I may have psoas syndrome. I’m trying to decide if I should continue my training, reduce my training, or scrap my half all together.

Before doing anything, get a sports medicine doc to have a look at you. They should be able to diagnose the issue and offer treatment options which may not be as drastic as pulling out of races.

I have a bad history with doctors and sports injuries. Starting with a knee injury initially diagnosed as a sprain that later turned out to be a mcl and meniscus tear after finishing out the near entirety of my freshman football year getting verbally berated by my coaches, to a tendon tear in my hand, to being told to quit running altogether because ā€œit’s bad for meā€ by the last orthopedic specialist i saw a few years back(i wasn’t even running at the time, a lot of sitting and drinking). I have kinda learned to listen to my body.

Sometimes it's a matter of finding the right doctor/medical professional.

My knee surgeon told me 15 years ago, before I even took up running, that I should give up all sports activities and shouldn't even walk up and down stairs when they could be avoided due to lack of cartilage around my kneecap.

When my tibialis flared up the first time, the sports medicine ortho was convinced it was a stress fracture and when the MRI came back clean said "oh, it must be soft tissue, good luck with that" and cut me loose.

It wasn't until I found a PT who specializes in running that I got the tibialis diagnosed and treated appropriately. She's been a godsend for keeping me going through dry needling and homemade custom inserts.

Don't give up on finding the right doc/PT for you. They can be a great help and keep you going if you don't have to stop and heal.

Just want o be clear that I ā€œlovedā€ this in solidarity because I understand it, 100%. IDK where the elusive medical specialists people rave about are, but they sure aren’t where I live. I have been misdiagnosed over and over and over, and when not misdiagnosed, dismissed with ā€œit’s just the aging process,ā€ or ā€œmaybe you should exercise less?ā€ After spending more than I can afford in time and money going from one specialist to another for a year, I gave up. And honestly listening to my body + a lifetime of athletic experience, + finding some helpful information via Internet has achieved more progress and success than any of the medical system provided me. I wish you success in finding some relief!

Neener neener? šŸ˜‚ This week is glorious, but it’s supposed to warm back up this weekend. If it says ā€œ52ā€ we will probably get upper 40s at our house, which isn’t great for my tomatoes.

SO jealous! This northern WI girl’s DH is on a work assignment in FL and is tagging along. Still figuring out that my normal morning running time isn’t cutting it here. Dying a bit each morning but I refuse to use the hotel dreadmill.

I was having knee pain and went to see an orthopedic surgeon who informed me that the cartilage in my knee was worn down and that I would require surgery at some point. This was 17 years ago! Since that time, I went through a period where I initially was doing P90X, then was doing conventional strength training where I got my squat up to 225 lbs and now having run two marathons and currently training for my first (and most likely only) Dopey Challenge. All of this activity without ANY knee pain whatsoever!

I was actually discussing this with my wife the other day and recalled that the surgeon NEVER talked to me about my lifestyle and recommended that I should lose weight. Looking back, I believe that my weight was too much for what my body could support and my knee pain was the result of the weight.

Come next Disney race, this will be all the northerners here when Florida has ideal running temps of 60 degrees and 98% humidity.

I cannot wait for those MW mornings/temps. No more complaining how cold it is. I walked out to my mailbox this morning at 8:30am and it was 84* with 70% humidity and I was saying how cool it felt outside. :crazy2: Then the afternoon came. It's now 100*, feels like 107*, with 70* dew point. Gross. I get to go coach baseball for the next four hours in this. 😰

I am seeing 43 as a low on my weather in PA tomorrow. I guess it'll be shorts/t-shirt since I am on a work trip and didn't bring anything else!
