The Running Thread -- 2022

Absolutely! That babysitting comment is so annoying. My husband is a stay at home dad and when our kid was little he would get comments like those from time to time when they were out running errands or going to the park. He was always like, “Not babysitting. Taking care of my kid.” Even now, schools, dr offices, etc default to calling me first even though he is listed as the primary contact because they assume as the mom, I am the one who will take care of all that stuff. I used to just do it. Now I tell them to call him and remind them he is listed as the primary contact. The gender roles are deeeeply ingrained.
100%, yes.

What a great weekend of Ironman Kona footage!!! These athletes amaze me. Now I need to keep myself from impulsively signing up for a 70.3 next year…
Do it! A 70.3 is the perfect tri distance where you can go steady and pace yourself the entire way. This is in stark contrast to the Olympic distance which is too short to go steady but too long to be flat out the whole time.

For those who run in, or have run in, Nike Alphafly Next% are they worth the cost? I normally run in Asics Novablast 2 but have been considering trying the Alphafly. I did a 10 mile race yesterday and it seemed like a majority of the guys in front of me were in Alphafly (some in Vaporfly). Curious on how they would work out for longer distance runs.

Also, I notice that they retail at stores for $275 but can be bought on ebay for $100-$125 cheaper. Any reasons for that? Last year's models?

Lots of people love the Nike super shoes. I have the Vaporfly and they just don't fit me well. Lots of heel slipping and causes me blisters. Honestly prefer the Saucony Endorphin Pro 3.

Be careful on eBay, lots of fakes out there for nikes. There are lots of deals to be had fairly regularly from Nike and other retailers if you are willing to be a bit patient. Usually last years models are heavily discounted. I paid $90 for my Vaporflys. Brand new from Nike.

Mario Lemieux 6.6 7.4K
Had a running first during a race today. It had been about eight years since I've previously done this race. It has the unique distance since it benefits the Penguins and Lemieux Foundation. You even get the man, the myth, the legend giving out high-fives at the finish line. Nice weather for it, sunny, 35 and not too much breeze. Aside from an entirely unsustainable first mile pace, not much else for the first half of it.

Here's where the fun happened; I was probably in about 15th position at the 5k mat. The course goes up through a tunnel at about 3.5. There was a guy probably 15 yards ahead of me and upon exiting the tunnel, we start to make a left like the course has always been. There are a few spectators at the exit who go, "everyone else was making a right". We head off the other way now and after about a 1/4 mile we laughed and figured we'd screwed ourselves. We start heading back on a parallel road and can see people exiting the right way now. Finished in 28:24. The winners even went the wrong way. Now sure how it happened to start with but first time that's ever happened to me during a race. I guess the smart thing should have been just sticking on right course to start with, had an enjoyable time racing, nonetheless.

Agree that there are fakes out there. But don’t running shoes at that price also have to go through the EBay authentication process? I am an Air Jordan fan and i know that most Jordan’s have to be authenticated by eBay in the transaction.

Caffeine in fuel. How long does it take to hit your bloodstream/take effect and how long does it last?

Blood plasma levels peak at about 60 min with a half-life of about 4-6 hours.

Graham, T.E. Caffeine and Exercise. Sports Med 31, 785–807 (2001). https://doi-org.ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/10.2165/00007256-200131110-00002

"When caffeine is consumed it appears in the blood within minutes, with peak caffeine plasma concentrations after oral administration reported to occur at times (Tmax) ranging from 30 to 120 min [43, 120,121,122]. The absolute bioavailability of caffeine is very high and reaches near 100% as seen in studies reporting areas under the plasma concentration-time curves (AUC) [120]"

"While the average half-life (t1/2) of caffeine is generally reported to be between 4 and 6 h, it varies between individuals and even may range from 1.5 to 10 h in adults [120]. The wide range of variability in caffeine metabolism is due to several factors. The rate of caffeine metabolism may be inhibited or decreased with pregnancy or use of hormonal contraceptives [125], increased or induced by heavy caffeine use [131] cigarette smoking [132] or modified in either direction by certain dietary factors [133] and/or variation in the CYP1A2 gene, which will be discussed later [125, 132,133,134]."

Personally I feel the effects after about 15-30 min. and feel like the effect wanes after 60-90 min.

Is there always an offer to buy some Photopass photos after runDisney weekends? In 2017, after WnD I got a special 7 photos for 77$ package. In 2020, for MW, I had pre-purchased Memory Maker. I am hesitating on which approach to take for Springtime Surprise 2023. TIA

I did not receive any sort of offer like that this year (participated in MW [pre-purchased MM] and SS.)

A LOT of people in the rundisney FB groups who are running for charity are selling MM slots for race weekends as part of their fundraiser....usually $10-20/bib and they will email you all of your race photos after the race weekend.

Thanks 😊 I won’t count on a special runDisney deal then. I expect to have more than 6 pictures that I will want.

I wasn’t sure if I was ok with the MM sharing but I might reconsider if it is for charity.

QOTD for people who menstruate:

I am on my period this weekend and generally have a rough time of it. I have taken birth control since I was 16 to manage these symptoms, and it helps a lot (although I have my own concerns about this type of management... that's for another time), but I still get cramps and feel blah.

Anyway, one nice thing about my birth control is it makes me period very predictable... so today I looked ahead and came to the very sad realization that I am going to be on my period during MW. I have a long run on Sunday this weekend, so I wanted to ask if anyone does anything different when doing LRs on their period that I might try practicing this Sunday?

Some things I already do:
  • I am iron deficient according to bloodwork and take an iron supplement daily, even when I'm not on my period. If I miss this supplement I definitely notice. I wonder if I should increase my iron on these weekends?
  • I wear a menstrual cup which is a LIFE CHANGER and means I won't really need to worry about anything in that regard on race day.

So according to Stacy Sims book, the beginning of your period is actually one of the most advantageous times to have hard efforts because of where you are in your hormonal phase (if I read/understood correctly.) I have found that working out can actually help with cramps, but that's anecdotal and I know that that's not the case for everyone. If you're practicing your nutrition (because: long run!) I would definitely try something with caffeine and see if that works for you.

I don't really do anything different. I do notice that my cramps are less severe when I'm in a tough training block so that helps tremendously.

The last time that my period really had an impact was during a time that I wasn't following my training as well as I should have. My cramps were so bad that I called my partner to pick me up and then spent the car ride home in tears. I know it's generally not a good idea to take ibuprofen for a run but if you find yourself in a similar situation it might be worth the risk.

Fully agree on the menstrual cups! When I first switched, it was kind of gross but now I can't imagine going back. It makes that time of the month so much simpler!
