The Running Thread -- 2022

lolol somehow no pain at all today????

Wondering if this was some sort of nerve related? I'm planning on bringing my soon-to-be-retired shoes to my very fast/knowledgable/good at running friend tonight when I see her for dinner. Debating on a run tonight.... I feel like if I have no pain I can try my new Brooks...

ETA: the store I went to won't accept returns on used shoes, even if I hate them, so I might take tonight off so that my shoes can be inspected before I run in them. I'm so indecisive it's annoying.
I'm glad your foot is better!

I think the obvious answer would be the Garmin 255. Should be similar to your previous watch but with a few of the new bells and whistles.
This is also my suggestion @Jules76126 . If you can find a 245 on sale that would still be a newer version but I like having current generation technology.

Even if the store you bought them from won't take returns, you should be covered by Brooks' "Run Happy" guarantee, so you could work directly with them to return/replace them.

Thanks everyone. With the holidays coming, I’ll probably watch for a sale. And there is always the chance I find it on a walk.

Marathon Petit Train du Nord 2023 Race Report

Summary: Gorgeous day, amazing supporters, I ran the race that I wanted and PR.

My Summer training cycle felt difficult. Covid in June, three weeks family trip in July and then the big steady ramp-up in the heat. I felt like I could not hold any tempo without tremendous efforts. But I was constant and healthy, zero injury.

It was hard to establish a race goal besides trying to beat last year time. I vaguely knew that I wanted to test myself somehow for no particular reason besides having done all that training. I had settled on a range of acceptable paces knowing that it all depended of how much of a struggle I wanted.

This was my fourth marathon, the second one on this slight downhill straight point-to-point course. 🚂

The familiarity of the parking/bus/bag drop/wave start was very reassuring. I started calm and wanting to enjoy this cool, clear sky morning with the Fall foliage in all its glory.

I started in the sixth wave having been optimistic during registration ten months ago. I quickly found other runners going at a reasonable (in the previously identified range) 5:50min/km pace and settled on that for my overall race pace objective. First 10k in 58:20, spot on.

The course grade is particularly favourable in the next portion. I went by effort and kept a comfortable fast pace. I was looking forward to the Mont-Roland Station: At 17km, my cousin’s partner was volunteering and I took the time to hug her and take a selfie. They had made a sign just for me and I took another selfie with it. I was crying for a while after, nobody had ever done that for me before.

The 3h50 minute pacer 🐰 passed me then (they had started a wave after me so 5min behind). I decided to stay with them for a while. I wanted to see if I could hold that BQ pace and if it would break me. That was the challenge I needed to add to this race, one that would be more meaningful and more of a learning opportunity than chasing an arbitrary number.

I shouted internally 📣 when I saw my 21.1k time, knowing that my family would see it on the tracker too: 1:59:44.

At 28km, my cousin was waiting for me. I hugged him and having such support mentally carried me for a good while, at least through the toughest 4km of this course.

I was no longer looking at time, the last 10k being open, do as I feel kind of strategy so I just kept paces that felt comfortable. I never hit a wall. Nutrition and hydration were near perfect. I was mostly passing people. I had a side cramp in the last 4km. I thought of DD who have learned to deal with them and I just kept moving forward. I sprinted the last 200m.

I finished in 4:02:40, a PR by over 16 minutes and better time than anticipated. The word I texted my mom to describe my race was “impeccable”. It was really my best race ever. Not the fastest, not the goofiest, just greatly managed. My paces when I looked at them later in the afternoon confirmed that: 5:50 on the dot for the first, third and fourth quarter, 5:32 for second quarter, the speedier part.

I practiced something else besides food and recovery after the race: I went to a bathroom, washed up and changed. Yes, I felt fresh enough to tour a Disney park! No need to return to the resort during Springtime Surprise 🤭

Finally, I went cheering for @azrivest. It is a real pleasure seeing a new marathoner and a smiling success! Congratulations 🥳

What a fantastic race and PR. Congratulations!!!

Um. Chicago is gonna be cold this weekend for this FL girl. I am at a loss for what to wear. Low 40’s at the start and high 50’s at the finish.

I am thinking…..t-shirt, throwaway arm sleeves, throw away gloves, capris and throw away ear headband thingy??? I’ll have throw away sweatshirt, sweatpants, Mylar blanket and hand warmers for the corral.

ETA: hello perfect racing weather 😁

For this Chicago guy, I wait all year for this weather. You will be fine once you get moving. My mantra is that if I'm not a bit cold for the first two miles then I wore too much, and if I'm still cold at mile 4 then I didn't wear enough.

My only advice is to make sure any throwaway stuff you start the race with is very easily discardable. For example, you won't want to have to stop to tug off too tight capris. For most people (but only you know you) if you upper body is warm then your whole body is warm enough.

Great job racers!!! @FFigawi @Naomeri @PaDisneyCouple @RuntheMouse @flav sorry if I'm missing anyone!

@SheHulk I'm just gonna make peace with what's happened. I think at this point all my rehabbing is making it worse.

@Bree I'll be with you! Planning on wearing throw away clothes (old sweats). I ran in pretty chilly conditions for a half and ended up holding a sweater and gloves for 12.5 of my 13 miles. Never again!

Thanks. I get these temps down here, but never for 26.2 miles 😃

I am just grateful to be able to go at all at this point. My husband is staying behind to deal with all the damage from the hurricane and getting our barn cleaned up so we can bring our horses home.

You should be fine with an ear band and gloves once the race starts. Sure, you'll be slightly chilly for the first mile or two as @Kerry1957 said, but you'll heat up fairly quickly.

I can’t say what to wear because I am a polar bear so even though I bring throwaway clothes, I usually end up removing them at bag check, putting them in the bag that I then hand in to a frozen volunteer wearing Winter jacket, hat and gloves. Last weekend we were a total of two in T-shirt in my wave. I had no regrets.

I did see people struggling on course to remove their shirt and were stuck holding their caps and glasses while awkwardly trying to keep running. I saw bathrobes, thorn shirts, etc. I also saw a lot of people with their shirts knotted around their waist, I guess that they wanted to keep those and ended up carrying them for a full marathon. It would have driven me nuts.

Whatever you wear, make sure that it is easy to remove and to discard safely.

Love it. As a rule, I stick to shorts and a short-sleeve shirt unless it drops below ~40. At a certain point, you just don't feel the cold... or anything... because your limbs go numb...

In the last month, I tried to find Maurten Gel 100 Caf 100 at stores and expos that carry the brand and thought that it was a shortage but no! Maurten no longer sells or ships it to Canada! Good thing I had kept my last two for my race.

I might try to cross the border and buy some. If not, do you know if they sell it at the runDisney expo? Otherwise, I could also have some delivered to my resort when I go in April. No rush, my next marathon is in May. TIA

I'm bringing throw away clothes for the corral, but my race outfit will be shorts and short sleeves, along with gloves (because Raynaud's). I tested that out this morning - it was 45 degrees when I left for my run in the dark and I was very comfortable running. I figure I'll be even warmer with the sunny skies they're calling for and hoping wind isn't much of a factor.

Are you doing the 5K?

I've looked for Maurten at runDisney expo's in the past and not found it, just my personal experience

I didn't plan on doing the 5K. I was opting to sleep in LOL!!! I don't get much time to do that with horses and now dealing with the hurricane aftermath. My eyes are crossing working on our property loss forms, finding receipts and uploading photos. Our tack and feed room doors inside the barn were blown in and even though a lot of our stuff was up high it got blown down into the flood waters never to be seen again. We are borrowing tack so my daughter can keep up with her riding.

I'm packing shorts and capris and will probably make a game day decision. It was 60 degrees this morning and I was cold in a t-shirt and skirt until I got moving.

Oooooo, those conditions are perfect! I would probably also opt for short sleeve shirt and lightweight capris. I really like leggings vs shorts for races. I think it’s the compression. And since you are used to the heat (like me), you will probably find you can get away with slightly more clothing than those who see real cold temps. +/- on the sleeves. A throwaway sweatshirt for the corral would be good enough for me but if you can get them off easily and your arms get cold, go for it!

Does anyone have an Apple Watch-compatible interval app they like? I'm looking for one that's just a timer but has options for different sets/cycles.

I tried Intervals Pro today and did NOT like it. I'm pretty sure the measurements were wrong, it didn't pause the workout when I had to stop at lights, and it ended when the timer did even though I was still running. So now I'm looking for something I can have running concurrently with my Apple Fitness workout!

ETA: Also apparently I have to pay for Intervals Pro premium or whatever to export to Strava which 😡

Has anyone in here used the Caroline Girvan lifting programs? I was doing some digging around yesterday for some workout stuff and saw her programs mentioned multiple times (usually as a comparison to Liift4/LiiftMore.) I appears that she has a website, and then all of her workouts are on youtube (yay for free!?) The Iron series is all weight lifting, 30min/day, 5 days a week.
