The Running Thread -- 2022

Slightly panicking because I can’t put pressure on my right foot. I don’t have time for this!

One thing that I've tried to implement every time some new pain pops up is to give it 48 hours. I rest it and I might throw a few remedies at it (meds, tape, ice or heat), but I don't get crazy unless it isn't feeling substantially better after those two days. About 95% of the time, it goes away on its own. If not, then I've got my PT on speed dial. Normally, he would say to give it a week, but as we approach the core of Dopey training, I would at least want to talk through what's going on and get his thoughts. He's used to crazy runners so this isn't usually a problem.

Just relax and breathe! It'll probably be fine.

Was there a thread of non disney races that people on the board were doing? I did a quick search but I don't think I used the right terms.

Anyway if anyone is going to be at the Long beach, CA races this weekend, I would be interested to meet up pre/post half marathon.

I don’t think it was a thread, I think it was either a SAFD or a QOTD

Just took my sock off post-run to find my very first-ever bloody toenail?? What the heck? After literally 30+ years of running, 7 marathons, dozens of half marathons? Why? I'm on my 3rd pair of shoes of the exact same model. And before you ask, my toenails are cut very short. It was a very rare treadmill run for me, which I hate, so I'm going to go ahead and blame the treadmill and decide I shouldn't use it again.

What about your socks? Are they tighter than usual, did they shrink in the wash for example? That cause me some side blisters once.
The only black toenail I got because of running was because I had nail polish and had not realized that the nails had grown. I now do with natural toenails year round or, if wear some for a special occasion, take it off the next day.
Finally, do you lock your shoelaces so that your foot does not move forward?
Good luck with the healing!

All great suggestions. Same socks as always. My feet are generally not fussy at all, I wear cotton socks from Target for the most part. I do not lock my shoelaces and often my shoes do loosen up while I run. I'm going to blame that + treadmill I think :)

If it gets painful… heat a needle super hot, burn it through the nail, let it drain, and keep on trucking. 😂

Marathon Petit Train du Nord 2023 Race Report

Summary: Gorgeous day, amazing supporters, I ran the race that I wanted and PR.

My Summer training cycle felt difficult. Covid in June, three weeks family trip in July and then the big steady ramp-up in the heat. I felt like I could not hold any tempo without tremendous efforts. But I was constant and healthy, zero injury.

It was hard to establish a race goal besides trying to beat last year time. I vaguely knew that I wanted to test myself somehow for no particular reason besides having done all that training. I had settled on a range of acceptable paces knowing that it all depended of how much of a struggle I wanted.

This was my fourth marathon, the second one on this slight downhill straight point-to-point course. 🚂

The familiarity of the parking/bus/bag drop/wave start was very reassuring. I started calm and wanting to enjoy this cool, clear sky morning with the Fall foliage in all its glory.

I started in the sixth wave having been optimistic during registration ten months ago. I quickly found other runners going at a reasonable (in the previously identified range) 5:50min/km pace and settled on that for my overall race pace objective. First 10k in 58:20, spot on.

The course grade is particularly favourable in the next portion. I went by effort and kept a comfortable fast pace. I was looking forward to the Mont-Roland Station: At 17km, my cousin’s partner was volunteering and I took the time to hug her and take a selfie. They had made a sign just for me and I took another selfie with it. I was crying for a while after, nobody had ever done that for me before.

The 3h50 minute pacer 🐰 passed me then (they had started a wave after me so 5min behind). I decided to stay with them for a while. I wanted to see if I could hold that BQ pace and if it would break me. That was the challenge I needed to add to this race, one that would be more meaningful and more of a learning opportunity than chasing an arbitrary number.

I shouted internally 📣 when I saw my 21.1k time, knowing that my family would see it on the tracker too: 1:59:44.

At 28km, my cousin was waiting for me. I hugged him and having such support mentally carried me for a good while, at least through the toughest 4km of this course.

I was no longer looking at time, the last 10k being open, do as I feel kind of strategy so I just kept paces that felt comfortable. I never hit a wall. Nutrition and hydration were near perfect. I was mostly passing people. I had a side cramp in the last 4km. I thought of DD who have learned to deal with them and I just kept moving forward. I sprinted the last 200m.

I finished in 4:02:40, a PR by over 16 minutes and better time than anticipated. The word I texted my mom to describe my race was “impeccable”. It was really my best race ever. Not the fastest, not the goofiest, just greatly managed. My paces when I looked at them later in the afternoon confirmed that: 5:50 on the dot for the first, third and fourth quarter, 5:32 for second quarter, the speedier part.

I practiced something else besides food and recovery after the race: I went to a bathroom, washed up and changed. Yes, I felt fresh enough to tour a Disney park! No need to return to the resort during Springtime Surprise 🤭

Finally, I went cheering for @azrivest. It is a real pleasure seeing a new marathoner and a smiling success! Congratulations 🥳

Congrats on a great race and the new PR!

Hi all! I feel like this has been discussed but can’t seem to find the posts!

I’m finally going to buy a treadmill. Eyeing the Nordic track 1750 or 2450. Wondering if anyone has opinions on either?

I have a Nordic track. We have the EXP 7i. No complaints. We really enjoy the iFIT program. Our treadmill does not decline, but that doesn’t bother us. We could use a bigger screen, but a small complaint. We do currently have a cracked deck, but it is covered by warranty. We are going to buy the maintenance plan since we use the treadmill daily. Nordic track is sending someone to fix the deck so hopefully our no complaints will continue.

Okay watch question. I need a new watch.

Long story - I had a Garmin Forerunner 235 for five years. No problems with it. It still works fine. We were getting ready yesterday day and I grabbed the watch on the way out the door. I popped it on the roof of the car while I buckled my child into her car seat. We live on a busy road (speed limit 35 mph) and as we pull out of our driveway we hear something fall. I realize it’s my watch I forgot to grab off the top . :scared: We do a swing around back to the driveway and I do a quick look. We had an appointment at Boston Children that trumped looking for my watch so after 5 minutes, I had to leave. We get home from our appointment and my husband did a more extensive search. Could not find it. At this point, I am thinking either it flew further than I thought or someone found it.

I like the garmin product and want to stick with them. I do not need anything fancy. Looking for a cost effective option that does similar things to the forerunner 235.

I think the obvious answer would be the Garmin 255. Should be similar to your previous watch but with a few of the new bells and whistles.

I know that my vivoactive has a "find my watch" feature through the app that will make it make a horrible noise as long as it can connect to the bluetooth on my phone and the watch battery isn't dead. Might be worth a try.

Slightly panicking because I can’t put pressure on my right foot. I don’t have time for this!
lolol somehow no pain at all today????

Wondering if this was some sort of nerve related? I'm planning on bringing my soon-to-be-retired shoes to my very fast/knowledgable/good at running friend tonight when I see her for dinner. Debating on a run tonight.... I feel like if I have no pain I can try my new Brooks...

ETA: the store I went to won't accept returns on used shoes, even if I hate them, so I might take tonight off so that my shoes can be inspected before I run in them. I'm so indecisive it's annoying.
