The Running Thread -- 2022

I’m sure those of you who live in the south will find this funny, but it’s currently 27C (81F) here, and I’m dreading my run.
We live in Northern Ontario, so it’s rarely that hot at 8pm here. I was hopeful during the day that it’d cool down, but nope.
I’m impressed by those of you who deal with these (and hotter) temperatures all the time!

ETA: guess I didn't need to worry about the heat since I just spent the last hour and a half trying to get my two year old to fall asleep. Guess tonights run is happening tomorrow.

I survived a 25 hour trip through the medical world Thursday. I'm back home safe and sound and healthy.

During my journey, at least 6 nurses asked me if I was a runner, based on my heart rate.
Glad to hear everything turned out OK!

I had the same issue during a routine checkup last year. First the nurse came in took my pulse and BP, gave me a funny look and quickly left. The scene is repeated a minute later with the PA. Then my PC physician came in and confirmed I'm a runner. He said the other two feared I was having a "cardiac event". The first time he took my pulse it was 39, but after he explained the commotion to me it soared up to 45.

Being an older, heavier guy (64 and 210), my low HR always confuses new care givers. I just give them a look of shock and disappointment and ask them, "are you implying this is not what a marathoner's body looks like?" The personable ones laugh with me.

I had a similar experience. Last year, in the hospital, I had multiple nurses ask if I was a runner or athlete after seeing my heart rate. When I was first admitted, they asked if I was sure I was in labor, as my heart rate was not elevated at all. I was most definitely was in labor and had the baby later that day.

I have gotten my husband used to talking about summer heat and humidity in T+D terms. He has taken it to the next level, taunting. I am working at work and he's working at home. He texts me to say, "T+D is off the chart - currently 167 and your chart only goes to 166." Mind you that he had to go from our weather monitor across two rooms to where I keep my running plan and then turn over the post-it note to get to the highest T+D to tell me this. I assured him that the actual T+D chart this is based on goes higher... but now I'm not looking forward to my run after work!

Sitting at T+D of 161 right now. I may have to break down and use the treadmill 😱😱

it's 151 T+D right now, but most of that is attributed to the fact that it's 91 degrees outside. On Friday morning it was 47 degrees. I desperately need to get a run in, but I think instead of doing 6mi tonight and 3mi tomorrow it's going to be 4ish and 4ish. The treadmill is calling, but that means I'll have to wait for DD to fall asleep, and I don't want to run at 9pm.

Does anyone switch to run/walk intervals when it gets hot and humid? I saw that suggested somewhere as a strategy.

I will do that if it gets too bad during the run. I had a 14 miler on Sunday morning that started out at a T+D around 148. The T+D rose into the mid-160s pretty quickly, though, and I just couldn't keep my pace up any more by mid-way, even with adjusted pacing targets. At that point I switched to roughly-defined run/walk intervals on the theory that it's better to finish the distance that way than to bail out halfway through. I ended up going through a full 2 L of water during the run.

I don't know if it's age catching up with me or if this summer has been that much worse than normal but I've struggled far more with the T+Ds than I have in years past.

The T+D is 146 right now, which might as well be off the charts given the fact im not at all heat acclimated. Im seriously considering just running inside today. Thankfully it should be cooling down a bit later this week.

Is this where I admit I’d rather run in freezing temps than this gross heat?

As long as it keeps you slow, then it's better than nothing and better than not properly adjusting. To explain, let's say you were aiming for a 10:00 min/mile unadjusted. The T+D is 150 and you minimally adjust 4.5% to 10:27 min/mile. However, you feel as if the 10:27 pace is too quick for you. You can absolutely slow down even more (again the % adjustment is a starting point, you can go slower, but most of the time you don't want to aim for faster). You could do 11:00-11:30-12:00 if you feel like that's the same effort level. But what you probably don't want to do is try and do intervals to average out to 10:27 min/mile pace. Because in my opinion, the running portion has to be a little quicker to compensate for the walking breaks and that little increase in pace (even with walking) is going to push you a little further than you're aiming for. Instead, aim for 10:27 min/mile run pace, and then let the walks take you even slower (to the 11:00-11:30 min/mile pace). As soon as you see a fade in the training run, you're almost always better off stopping the run at that moment. Very little is gained trying to finish out the pre-scheduled workout when seeing a fade. I would define a fade as non-heat and non-course elevation change in pace of >30 seconds per mile.

It was T+D of 162 by the time I got off work, but I decided to run outside anyway. I can’t hide from the heat forever. I switched my run/walk from my usual 30/30 to 30/60 and did okay. If I had somewhere with shade to run, it almost might have been a nice day.

I’m with @accm —I’ll take freezing over baking any day of the week.

I'm trying to wrap my head around full sun of 93F with a UV index of only 3. That doesn't seem right.

T&D of 156 at 4:45am this morning when I went out for my run here (Plano, TX). Slowed my pace per T&D chart which definaely helped (based on HR data) but it just isn't much fun. Going to be a really long summer. Will give my cooling towl a shot on tomorrow's run.

I’ve been on the treadmill. I prefer to be outside, but comfort takes priority for me during the FL summers. I thought I’d run outside this morning since it’s my easy pace day with only 4.5 miles. Woke up at 5am and the T+D was 151. I said nope and went back to sleep 😂

Yeah, I don’t know much about that. I guess it’s just because its later in the day? Today’s UV Index chart shows that it will peak at 8 around 1-2pm and be down to 3 by 5pm 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️
