RACE RECAP: Hotlanta Half Marathon

This morning I did the Hotlanta half marathon and it lived up to its name. This was my attempt at POT for Marathon weekend. My goal was 2:07. The start temp was 74 with a dew of 69, so 143 uff, and i think it finished around 149. It was HOT. When I stepped outside I knew that 2:07 was basically out of reach but i was going to try. I hung good, probably too fast for conditions good though 8 miles. During mile 9 I tanked. Sun was out. It was hot. The hills were killing and i was THIRSTY. Once i broke i sort of gave up on the hills but i finished it. I have done this course once before and said i hated it and i concur with that sentiment again. I finished in 2:13 and it was actually a tad short per garmin.

I did this race only because it was local, i could walk to and from the start, and it fit in the timeline. I was injured coming off MW 2022 and happy i actually ran this pretty pain free. Right now my knee is sore but when i was running back, knee and hip were good. It was just SO HOT. If you remember back for MW 2022 training I was also having issues with my dad being sick and in and out of the hospital. Well this training was no different. I started it in April and Dad also spent the first 4 days of it in the hospital but came home. I got through my last long training run and then Dad was back in the hospital on May 31. He was there 10 days with only 2 being ok kind of days. He started in ICU, went to floor medicine, and then on Wednesday night June 8 back to ICU. He was bad on thursday and the hospital suggested it was time for Hospice. We moved him to Hospice on Friday. At hospice, the entire family was able to spend the day together. Dad was calm and with it. He could participate in conversations. We left friday night with a great memory. On Saturday morning, Dad passed away. I got up and ran this race because he would never let me quit. I was hoping i could get POT but the conditions were hot and i was pretty exhausted.

No i plan to never do this race again.
My condolences. It's hard for any loss of a loved one, but a losing a parent just gut punches you. That stinks about crummy race conditions, but you still pulled off a great time!!!

QOTD:

Compression socks: during runs? After runs? Never?

ATTQOTD:
I got 3 pairs of procompression socks last year and I usually wear a pair after long runs (7+ mi for me...that’s about a 90min run) or when we fly because all of the sitting around for travel (and something about flying) always seems to make my feet swell. I saw a lot of people wearing them during the races at MW and there are so many companies and patterns and choices, but my socks squeeze my toes together so hard that there’s no way I’d ever be able to run in them without risking a lot of toenails and blisters. Not sure if that’s a sizing issue or just my feet. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don't use compression socks but I do use toe socks to prevent the squeezing issue. I use Injinji socks.

ATTQOTD: no experience with socks but I did use compression calf sleeves for about a year. I had an injury and the sleeves allowed me to run without pain. However, at some point they started causing the pain so now I run compression free again. I'm not sure this really helps you. Except, the sleeves wouldn't cramp your toes.

I do like you, but really only put them on after runs of 10 mi or longer (or flying). Which hasn't been many since I began following the DopeyBadger path 5 years ago.

+1 for injinji toe socks

Compression socks - never used them

Compression calf sleeves- I used them a lot when I was in the wrong shoe type and I'd have shin pain. However, haven't used them for years since getting back in the right shoe.

Out of curiosity, what was the right and wrong shoe type for you?

When I first started running, and I started to get shin splints, I wore compression Alf sleeves while I ran. I have t ever used the socks.

I do better in a neutral shoe, but mine was discontinued for a while so I switched to an Asics shoe which, unbeknownst to me, was a stability shoe. I think it basically was trying to turn my feet in ways they didn't want to be / didn't need to be turned because I don't over- or under-pronate. It caused me to have ankle/shin pain for a long time until I figured it out.

Interesting. Similar happened to me. Someone told me I over pronate so I bought stability shoes. Everything got worse. I got my gait re-analyzed and turns out I'm more neutral. Switched shoes and now I don't have problems with my shins anymore.

Same thing for me too after being fitted by a new running store. They convinced me to switch from a neutral shoe to a stability shoe. It started with shin pain and then I ended up with an IT band injury that took almost a year to heal. PT identified the stability shoe as the cause. Went back to neutral shoes and have had no problems since.

Compression socks: during runs? After runs? Never?

I picked up a pair of Feetures plantar fasciitis socks at the MW Expo. I wear them a lot post-run or when I'm having an especially bad day and they seem to help. However, I tried to wear them while running once and my feet immediately said "Nopeity, nope, nope, NOPE."

I bought a pair of calf sleeves and tried running in them and they got ditched pretty quick.

Compression socks: during runs? After runs? Never?

I wear compression calf sleeves (Zensah brand) after races and very rarely after a really hard training run. The research supports their usefulness as a recovery tool.

The last time I looked into research about compression gear during a run (and it was several years ago) the research was still mixed on the physiological benefits. However there was some debate as to the mental benefits. Similar to the “I tell you you are wearing Nike tank top and suddenly you run faster despite it not actually being a Nike branded top.”
