The Running Thread -- 2022

QOTD:

Compression socks: during runs? After runs? Never?

I usually wear calf sleeves after races. They seem to help, even if it is just mental.

Also, another member of team Injinji. I live by toe socks. Use them for runs and playing soccer. I'm super prone to blisters between some toes and they are amazing at preventing them.

On another note, is anyone running Grandma's this weekend. Getting ready to make the drive from the Twin Cities up to Duluth today.

ATQOTD: I wear compression socks on airplanes. Whatever it is that flying does to my legs, it doesn't happen with the socks. Calf sleeves might also work, but haven't tried them for that application.

I wear compression socks or calf sleeves (I have both) sometimes after a long, hard run or race - usually only to sleep.

Otherwise, I try not to run with too much "help" unless I have an injury.

After my last ankle sprain saga, I learned from my PT that compression socks can be useful for supporting and reducing swelling for ankle sprains. I would not have thought the compression would be enough for that, but go figure. I consider them a step down (as in, lighter compression) than wrapping the ankle in an Ace bandage.

Compression socks: during runs? After runs? Never?
I used to wonder why people would pay that price for socks.

But then came my infamous idea to sign up for a half marathon just 3 weeks away having not run in 6 weeks. I had an insanely busy long day after my long training run and wound up having to wear dress socks for a church meeting that night. As dress socks are tighter than my normal socks, I noticed a surprising improvement in how my legs felt after that and this was just dress socks. So off to the running store I went to get fitted for proper compression socks. Now I use compression socks for all long runs and recovery after long runs. I also use compression socks for all races and recovery after the race regardless of distance.

@OldSlowGoofyGuy finally got around to logging into my PTRR account. I did not pay to ship my number since i can walk there (of course it is hotter than the surface of the sun). I found my coral. I am in D. i think you got into C. I can't remember it is a few pages back. I should at least start fairly close to 7:30.

If this heat sticks around going to be ugly. I am still in a run/walk thing and will stick through it for the next few weeks just because of the heat.
I stopped running Peachtree after the 2019 race (purposefully planned, nothing to do with changes in 2020 and 2021 because of C-19). I'm very glad not to be running it this year since this heat wave appears to have no intention of leaving by July 4th. Fingers crossed for you guys that I'm wrong and we have a miraculous less-hot-than-the-surface-of-the-sun snap.

Learned during my long run today that my lizard brain has questionable priorities.

I turned a corner and sitting in the middle of the pathway a couple of feet in front of me was a snake. Without thinking, while simultaneously backpedaling, I paused my Garmin.

Can anyone else relate?

I'll do you one better. A few weeks ago I was running an out-and-back along a trail. Before I had reached my halfway/turnaround point, I came to a snake extended across the entirety of the trail. I stopped and immediately paused my Garmin (priorities), and considered the risk/reward of hopping the snake since I wasn't at my halfway point yet.

Spoiler: I gave up and turned around early.

This sort of thing happens all over. In a former life I worked at a casino with a full golf course. There were often alligators that came out of the water and sunned themselves on the golf course. On one occasion, a golfer spotted the gator near his ball, and asked me "Will you distract that while I play through?" No, I will not. But now I get it!

Race Report: She Power Half Marathon
Sunday June 19 in Indianapolis, IN

This race starts and finishes in downtown Indianapolis outside the Omni hotel. The hotel allowed runners to use their bathrooms. Nothing makes me happier than a real bathroom before a race start!

The course was FLAT and included time downtown, on the canal, next to the White river, and through some industrial and residential areas. I enjoyed the course except for 2-3 miles with major potholes and cracked roadway. Finish line included roses and cake, which was fun. The weather was close to perfect for a summer race.

I ran with my daughter who had very specific goals for this race, which was her 2nd half:
C goal: beat her 1st half time of 3:02
B goal: under 2:30
A goal: pace under 11 min/mile

My goal was to pace her and make it a fun, positive experience. Her longest training run was 10 miles and we hadn't run in a few weeks due to vacation, so I was a bit nervous.

We started off a little fast, but settled into a pace that she felt like she could maintain. At about mile 7 her hip started hurting so we stopped for some lunges. Then at mile 9, we stopped because a bug flew in my eye and I tried to get it out. After what seemed like 2 minutes, but was probably <20 seconds, my daughter pleaded with me to keep moving so I just delt with feeling like the bug was crawling around and we kept moving. We picked up the pace again in the last couple miles and finished strong.

She crushed her A goal, finishing with a 10:30 pace!

According to my phone, splits were: 10:03, 10:27, 10:28, 10:46, 10:31, 10:40, 10:52, 10:56, 10:43, 10:50, 10:34, 9:51, 10:29. I think I achieved my goal too because she immediately said that she wants to do another half in the future.

Overall, fun race that I wouldn't be opposed to doing again. 20220619_071647.jpg20220619_082843.jpg

That’s a beautiful medal!! Well done to both of you!!

I am looking for a trail running plan for DD. She is 14y.o. and has been running formally since 2018. She raced a 5k under 20 minutes in April. Yesterday in training she casually ran a 10k in 45 minutes (including her warmup!). I usually adapt a training plan for her but don’t know how to do that for trail. Any suggestions?

I might come back in a few days and ask if you have cross-country triathlon-sprint (800m swim, 17km mountain bike, 6km trail run) plan suggestions too… She is considering

Any sprint triathlon or even basic Olympic plan will get her most of the way there. She'll need to add in some hill running and hill biking to get her legs prepared for the climbing both of those legs require. Climbing, especially on the bike, takes solid training to prepare for.

In addition to what was said, the things people struggle most with triathlons are open water swimming and the bike to run. For open water swimming, it’s a lot different than pool swimming. It can be psychologically scary because you can see the distance and it looks far, also psychologically scary because the water is not always clear and you don’t know how deep it is, if there are fish, etc., you have to practice spotting to make sure you’re going straight (I added almost 100 yards to my swim this past weekend due to poor spotting), and you have a lot of people swimming near you and sometimes accidentally touching you. A lot of Tri clubs will offer open water swim workshops in the summer— maybe look into that for your area.
Practicing bike then run is called a brick workout (two disciplines back to back). Even for a strong runner, going from the bike to the run feels weird— legs like jello— and should be practiced.
Triathlons are super fun! I hope she gives it a ~*~ Tri ~*~ :)

there's fewer of you to judge my brain-moment here, so this is where I'm asking. DS1 snapped the inside part of the hinge on DS2's goodrs yesterday. So they're broken. Is this a warranty thing? Or does DS1 now owe his brother a pair of sunglasses? We're still well within the 1yr window.
