The Running Thread - 2021

I almost jumped on the Aftershokz deal this past weekend, but I'm pretty sure I need the mini size of the Aeropex. (I am a petite female with short hair, and I often purchase kid size hats.) Oddly, those were not discounted at all, even though the regular size ones were $30 off.

Anyone have experience with the sizing on these and if I truly do need the mini or not?

If you wear kid-sized hats, you would more than likely prefer the minis. I have a large head, and a lot of hair, and even I have considered the minis when I start layering on my winter headband, visor, etc. That being said, places like best buy usually carry them in-store, so if you have one nearby it may be worth trying a pair on?

I checked a few online inventories and they don't list the mini size, but I will pop in and visit a few just in case that's wrong. Good suggestion!

I really despise the medical field at times. I’m having super IT band issues while laid up from surgery. All I wanted was a referral to a PT. Yes, I know I have weak posterior which tightens up my quad and gives me outside knee pain. They wouldn’t give me one until I had an X-ray. I have the results from my patient portal. NORMAL!!!! I still can’t get a pt referral until my follow up appt tomorrow. This whole process has taken three freaking weeks. I’ve been foam rolling and stretching and using a therapy gun. I was finally cleared by my surgeon to see my sports massage person this week. She worked a miracle and I am finally walking without a limp because my quad isn’t tensed up tighter than a brick. I was supposed to ease back into running this week so I am super frustrated. I had no worries about Dopey after surgery, but with it taking weeks to get into PT I feel like I’m going to crash and burn.

ETA: and as soon as I posted this a friend got me into her sports PT tomorrow morning 🤦‍♀️

I understand completely. When an experienced runner with a known chronic condition wants to go for treatment, it does seem like a waste to jump through more hoops--and spend more money--than necessary. I am glad that my PT group offers a 3-pack of cash visits (so not covered by insurance) that I can use as a "tune-up" when I need for any kind of chronic condition.

Glad you got an appointment.

This is similar to what I do. Health insurance won’t cover the running-specialist PT I found, so I end up going and just paying cash. After spending a couple of months and paying for x-rays and an MRI just so the orthopedist, who was a “sports medicine specialist”, could tell me that he couldn’t figure out the issue, I just go to the PT first now. If she tells me it’s not a soft tissue issue that she can handle, then I’ll consider going back to the orthopedist. It’s amazing what a little dry needling and exercising can work out!

this method works for me and a number of my local runner friends.

This is exactly what I’m doing. Paying cash. My insurance copay for an in network facility is $50 after a referral and I get a whopping 7 visits a year. Cash is $40 a session, no referral needed and go as much as I want 🤔

Any suggestions for a clip-on bluetooth speaker for running? I know there are several out there, but I have no experience with them. Trying to come up with some present ideas for my older kids who are well past the "toy" stage and into the "I'd like this extremely expensive thing" stage, which means I have to get creative. I'd love to just get him some aftershokz, but I've kind of blown the budget on other stuff at this point. :rolleyes1

November mileage: 111.52. High mileage mark for the year. On track for Dopey next month.

More importantly I ran every run I needed to for the month. There was some rearranging from the schedule to fit them all in, but I did so, including the necessary runs while out of town visiting family for Thanksgiving.

Been a while since I posted my month progression report.

Thankfully I can refer myself with my plan, but I only get 20 chiro visits a year. When I get beyond that it’s only $10 more than my co-pay and I stay aligned. My chiro is also a runner and does ART and dry needling.

Not the cheapest, but I recently got the Noxgear 39g bluetooth speaker. I have only run with it a couple times so far, but I am very impressed: loud enough and great sound, so light that you don’t know it’s there, easy to use, and can attach via clip or magnets (all built into the design).

Did a race today, but official race time and my watch time are different. Do I go with the lower one (race) higher one (watch) or average them. Watch was started same time as I hit the timing mat, but the two times are 2 minutes apart.

Did the race report only gun time or could you be looking at gun time versus chip time in the results? Your watch should be within a couple of seconds of the race’s chip time.

It was a 5k put on by a local race company Elite events

Ok. I was going to look at the results and see if I saw anything strange in how they were reported or if there was anything that could explain your experience, but I can‘t do that without the name of the race.
