The Running Thread - 2020

April Stats
Run: 140.3 miles
Bike: 211 miles

For a month where I wasn't sure I would hit 100 miles running, I'm pretty happy with this! I also set a mile PR this morning: 7:36! I don't run a lot of one mile time trials, so I don't know if I ever could have ran faster than this at any point - I also don't remember how fast I ran the mile back in junior high, but I was usually the slowest one on the track then. 😁 Orange Theory challenged us to run a mile at the beginning of the month and one at the end of the month. I ended up 8 seconds faster than my mile at the beginning. I didn't watch my pace, and I tried to tell myself to keep pushing and not to give up.

April Totals:

Total Miles - 168.62 mi
Total Time - 23:45:02
Average Pace - 8.27/mi
Avg HR - 139

Did a lot more miles this month. With the whole no commute thing I have been getting to sleep in an extra hour and most days I have been adding an extra mile or so before gettting ready for work and fighting the traffic to my front bedroom/office. Also did a virtual half marathon on a workday morning when the temps were going to be in the 40's for the last time this spring. Started to add in a little speed work/tempo work to not get complacent with just easy miles

April 2020 Training Summary

Running duration = 20:27 hours
Running mileage = 143 miles
Average Pace = 8:35 min/mile (about 111 sec/mile slower than estimated LT)
Average HR = 133 (68% HRR)
Indoor Cycling duration = 20:14 hours
Indoor Cycling mileage = 312 miles
Indoor Cycling average power = 145 watts
Indoor Cycling average Normalized Power = 147 watts
LIIFT4 Strength or Yoga = 6:10 hours
Total Training Time = 46:51 hours

Training for the mile continues to go well. I'm in Week 7 of the training plan now. I've been able to increase my pace in the mile reps as time has gone on. I've gotten my 600m reps down from a 121.8 sec avg (5:26 min/mile) to a 119.1 sec avg (5:18 min/mile). My fastest 600m rep has been 116.6 sec (5:12 min/mile). My 400m PR has dropped from 1:22 (5:29 min/mile) in December 2019 to 1:14 (4:57 min/mile). I'm still struggling to match my longer duration reps (3k and LT pace) up to what I've been able to do in my mile reps. Seems odd to me since I would have anticipated my endurance would be my strength and not my weakness. I've still got several weeks of training to go before attempting to break 6 minutes in the mile. The training has been a nice change of pace from my normal routine and without any actual races on the schedule has allowed me to try something different. My LIIFT4 Strength program has finished and I was very happy with the results. I've decided to do a 7 week block of Yoga now to try something different.

April miles = 164

Month 2 of running more miles than planned, but it is the only time out of my house so I just keep going. No surprise, all of my Spring races were canceled or went virtual. I am not crazy about virtual races but I am actually considering registering for my June half as they are having folks run on the weekend of the race and submit times. I guess at this point that is as close as we are gonna get. Still hoping for Fall races...

March = 164
February = 101
January = 110

2020 total miles = 539

April Numbers:
Total Miles (Run/Walk) - 107.57
Time - 25 hours, 38 minutes

Year To Date:
Total Miles (Run/Walk) - 256.16
Time - 59 hours, 44 minutes

Being at home is definitely helping my total mileage. This was the first time I've ever had 100+ miles in a single month. On this past Sunday, my total mileage for this year also surpassed my total mileage for all of 2019. Other highlights of the month have been completing the entire Star Wars Rival Run Weekend at home, a new 5K PR (and then I beat it with another one on Monday), and signing up for the Run Disney Virtual Series which I am very excited about because of those medals! Looking forward to May, I joined a 50 mile challenge so I'm hoping to reach that with my running miles, stay consistent with getting out, and then possibly start looking at a training schedule for my next 10K (that I'm still crossing my fingers happens).

April total: 93.2 miles

Continuing my every other day approach of running, along with my Peloton strength classes and DownDog yoga.

Also...just saw this.

https://www.shopdisney.com/face-masks/?CMP=ILC-DPFY20Q3wo0423200429200023F

I saw these too!! Disney has on the website:

• Disney's cloth face masks align with the FDA's recommendations on non-surgical, non-industrial grade face masks.**

However I also read an article this morning that cotton face masks don’t work. The material breaks down. :scared::crazy2: But that study is specifically aimed at HCW who are in close contact with infected people for prolonged periods of time. I'd like to know at what point the moisture renders the masks useless. I'd wager you're still better off wearing them during your 25 minute trip to the grocery store or more importantly my 5 minute trip to the liquor store. Yet not sure how they affects a full day at a theme park. Lol.

My April miles: 51.6

But I was late catching up! Although I have to say this quarantine has really help me focus on running again! It’s now become my daily activity I look forward to the most! I am committed to doing the 5K day challenge for now until I feel ready to train for Wine & Dine.

April 2020
running: 113.5 mi
average pace: 11:14 min/mi
total time: 21.35 h

This was down from March by 20 miles. I was supposed to have a marathon on April 18, and I followed the taper in my training plan almost up to the race date. Now running maintenance.

tennis: 0 h

This is really painful. All of my tennis leagues have been suspended through the end of May at least. If social distancing restrictions loosen up before then, I may be able to get in some practice. I haven't had this much time off from playing tennis since I started some 13 years ago!

April 2020

Running
Miles: 82.4
Time: 14:43:49
Average Pace: 10:41

Pretty good mileage since I'm not training for anything!
Hitting the trails around my house with way more hills than usual - I actually completed the Strava Elevation Challenge this month - 2,000m of elevation climbed! (I finished at 2,088).

Other
15 LIIFT4 workouts
-Completed round 1 of LIIFT4 in March and liked the results so much that I started another round. Today was week 4 day 3.
-Arms look fantastic. Legs have always been good. Middle would be pretty nice if I stopped hiding from my kids and shoving junk in my face!

Really need to get my eating under control but quarantine is stressful!

Running
Distance: 32.36 miles
Time: 6:53:03 hours
Avg Pace: 12:45 min/mi

Surprisingly enough, this is more than March. I don't know how much running I'll do in May, because running in a mask is really starting to frustrate me but I can't comfortably/safely run without one.

barre:
10 Livestream classes
2 Instagram Live workouts
3 online videos
Total Time: 11:49:24 hours

So clearly I'm focusing more on barre than on running during this stay-at-home period ... and I'm perfectly happy with that.

April 2020 totals
Distance: 160.6 km (100 mi)
Average pace: 5m44s/km (9m14s/mi)

The word that came to my mind during my April 2020 training was confusion. In insight, I had clear intentions and goals, just a less structured plan and the acceptance that had to eventually come with it.

I had vaguely decided to:
  • Keep my monthly volume to 160km (100mi),
  • Decrease my average pace by about 10sec/km
  • Do so while encouraging the rest of the family to contribute to our combined 2020km year’s goal.
I succeeded even if it means that my weekly running schedule changed completely. DH now runs 5km every two days. DD14 prefers dancing and training in the basement. DD12 maintained a couple of runs per week but they are getting tougher and slower, she doesn’t have enough occasions to move. All to say that I now run more often, up to twice a day, but on shorter distances. My longest run being 12km (7.5mi). Also, I sometimes have to accelerate to compensate for a slower, familial, part of a run. I am not too sure how this prepares me for future goals but it keeps me going.

I will probably use a similar strategy for May, unless one of you convinces me that a 12km long run for a total 40km overall weekly volume is too short. I am opened to suggestions.

Wishing everyone a safe, clement weather and fulfilling running month!
