The Running Thread - 2019

June: 58.33 miles

My return to scheduled training came to a screeching halt June 17th when I messed up my back. Despite a round of really good anti inflammatories, pain medication and muscle relaxers there is still nerve pain going down my left leg and into my toes. Forget bending or getting socks on. MRI is scheduled for Wednesday. My training and racing plan for the next 9 months might end up being severely altered. Dealing with any type of pain is never easy, as many of us here know, but I am really struggling with disappointment, frustration and a bit of depression.

Sorry that really sucks. Hang in there.

June miles = 138. After my half marathon on 6/3, I have pretty much moved to maintenance mode with no races scheduled in the near future.

May = 150
April = 115
March = 140
February = 122
January = 123

788 total miles so far in 2019.

Fun Friday QOTD: What is a strange food item you eat or combination of foods you eat that most people think is strange?
ATTQOTD: Nothing really strange for me.

Wow. Not a great end to the day here. Owen, our 9 1/2 year old English Bulldog very unexpectedly passed away this evening. He had had a great day full of mommy time and treats and was in excellent health other than his nagging bulldog allergies. DW heard him thrash around for a second like he was scratching his back and when she went to put him to bed a few minutes later, he was gone. Our best guess is a massive sudden heart attack. Rest In Peace, big guy.

I am so sorry to hear about this.

As LSUlakes has yet to check in with a question of the day, I would like to move the pet discussion to running.

Who runs with their pets? Have you seen anyone run with anything but a dog?

I have to wait a while for our Brittany to grow up before taking her on runs, but I am looking forward to running with her when shes old enough and I think she looks forward to burning some energy.

QOTD: With the 4th of July falling on a Thursday, who is getting a long weekend? Do you only have the 4th off and have to go back to work Friday? What are your plans and any fun running events?

ATTQOTD: Lucky for me I am off for the 4th and the Friday just so happens to be my Friday off! Long weekend of fun for us. We are going to BBQ and hang out with friends. Hopefully I can get a run in as well!

ATT(previous because it's such a fun one)QOTD: I may be slightly off-topic since it's a drink rather than food, but it's gotten a lot of "Really?!" responses this year – I love to kick off my day with a double-shot of espresso added to my morning OJ, with ice. It's soooo good.

But, æbelskivers are something we can all agree taste good. With muchos lingonberries.
Love these so much. We don't make them very often cause they're messy and the collective patience of my household is lessened with two kids, but we do love them. Make them much less traditionally and fill with nutella.

ATT(current)QOTD: Off Thursday but not Friday, though it'll be dead at the office so the work day will hardly be a struggle. As far as running, just have my three scheduled training runs for my first 10K coming up in August. Keep bumping up my distance on relaxed runs which have been going well. Did 5 miles last night (my current longest duration to date) and will have 6 miles next Sunday. So far so good, other than stupid hot and humid Virginia weather (even when running at 9 p.m.).

I do have to work on Friday, but my boss won't be there, so it won't be too intense. I'm taking a rare whole week of vacation next week to take my daughters to Washington DC, so I have to make sure I tie up a bunch of loose ends anyway.

My employer only gives us the 4th off, but I am taking the 5th off as well. But sadly the morning of the 5th will be spend in an outpatient surgery center have my right ankle repaired. So no real fun plans for me for the weekend.

Attqotd: yes but not in the way you’re thinking. We are closed Tuesday/Wednesday this summer, and we are closed on the fourth since no one goes out to eat that night. I’m prepping a bunch of food today so my boss can do a Fourth of July party during the Main Street parade and not have me there.

No long weekend, but my cousin gets married on 7/4. So we will attend that and then back to work for me the next day. I hope Friday is quiet and easy.

I see that today is Canada Day, so happy long weekend to anyone on the board from the north :)

Catching up after 4 1/2 day work trip to Denver.

ATTQOTD-Running with dogs. Used to run with our lab and golden retriever. Even the Corgi sometimes. Our new pups (they will be 5 this month) are lab/golden retriever mixed and have no interest in running, playing in the water or retrieving anything unless it's food. They do like walks.

Hey @KSellers88......what type of leash and waist apparatus are you using for your retriever? That might be the solution I've been looking for.

ATTQOTD-weird food. All of my food habits are normal. Nothing too exotic. I do enjoy pineapple on chicken tacos (try it) or pizza. , barbecue sauce on a cheesesteak, cream cheese on a grilled cheese, ice cream on waffles, and old bay and malt vinegar on french fries.

ATTQOTD-4th of July- We are off on Thursday and work half days on Fridays all Summer. Yay!
Might go tubing on the Potomac River near Harper's Ferry.
Vacation starts NEXT Thursday.

June Running Summary

Total Miles: 127.50
Total Time: 21 hours, 17 minutes
Avg. Pace: 10:01
Elevation: 2,458 feet
Total Runs: 30 !!!!

Total distance for 2018: 581 miles

After slacking off in April and May, I have been running every day since Memorial Day. I guess you could say I'm in maintenance mode.
No events planned, nothing to train for right now.

I have the 4th off, but will work on the 5th. I could take Friday off, but we don't really have anything special going on this weekend, so I'll save it for a better day. No big running plans- probably hit the treadmill with a big fan blowing on me the whole time. :)

So was dipping McDonald's chicken nuggets in honey
Ahh! This used to be my favorite! Maybe this will now be my 4th of July plans ;)

ATTQOTD: So we are closed Friday so a nice long weekend for me. DH has to work a half day on Friday. We will then spend the weekend with my parents. My dad's birthday is Saturday, my sister's birthday was last week, and my grandmother's birthday is next week so we also have a little cookout to celebrate this weekend. I am hoping for nice weather.

I never even considered this would be thought of as weird. I eat ranch on just about anything possible...pizza, hot wings, salad, fries (except Wendy's fries), fried chicken, fried pickles, fried green beans and more...I am seeing a trend here with fried food so I am going to stop listing them all. LOL.
I have been told ranch on all of the things is a midwestern thing. I think it is an american thing.

We are open for business on Friday, but I took the day off and we will be road tripping for the long weekend. There was a lot of shade thrown my way when I said DH would need to wrangle kids while I go out for a run, but this was his idea to his friends so I did not care. And maybe I am just going to find somewhere to run to to get mimosas or something else to make me feel better about this trip!

Neither the distance nor pace I was expecting, so I am going to type out the positives to reinforce to myself it is fine. I ran a half marathon of rolling hills and finished better than I thought when I signed up. I know on a different course with different weather, and without spending the beginning with a slower runner friend I would do better, which is a new bit of confidence for me. I took my kids kayaking every week, and added in a few extra yoga classes and some strength work outs which all should make me a better runner. There has been a major coup at work and I came out well. I don't want to run at lunch anyhow as it is hot and humid. The biggest impediment to the early rising is the very late sunset and wanting to squeeze every minute of fun out of it and not going to bed. I will miss this sunlight in 3 months, so fewer AM long runs are a good trade for now.
