The Running Thread - 2019

Dipping fries in a frosty was totally normal when I was a kid. So was dipping McDonald's chicken nuggets in honey...it was actually one of the sauce choices way back when.

June was largely a successful running month. My primary goal was to see if I could get back to running 5 days/week and start a pre-conditioning plan before Space Coast training starts in mid-August. All has gone well on that front.

The end of the month was derailed by the unexpected passing of our dog, though. I haven’t been able to run since then due to a combination of interfering activities and just not feeling like it. As a result, I missed the last 25 miles I had scheduled for the month.

Running: 110.1 miles

On the dog front, a coworker who had something similar happen recommended that we look to find a new puppy sooner rather than later. Owen will never be replaced, but the house needs the life that a dog brings to it, especially with DW home alone during the day for her 6wk summer break. Those 6 weeks also present an ideal opportunity for bonding and training before school starts back up.

I wasn’t sure about the plan, but it was amazing seeing DW perk up as she started looking at puppies. There aren’t many bulldog breeders near us, but she found a set of puppies locally and a single puppy in Ohio. We met the local puppies yesterday and they left us cold. No spark or connection whatsoever. But I keep catching her looking at the pictures and video of the Ohio puppy and see her eyes light up and a smile creep onto her lips. She still wants her Owen back, but I think this puppy may be the one for her. So I’m writing this as we drive to Ohio from NC. Fingers crossed!

Ranch dressing for dipping with pizza. I forget when I picked up this habit, but it sure wasn’t while growing up in Maine

I never even considered this would be thought of as weird. I eat ranch on just about anything possible...pizza, hot wings, salad, fries (except Wendy's fries), fried chicken, fried pickles, fried green beans and more...I am seeing a trend here with fried food so I am going to stop listing them all. LOL.

@camaker good luck. Hope the puppy is perfect, but don't settle for something. Make sure it is the one. No dog will replace Owen but I can't imagine the empty house and being home all day.

Mallory is hanging in there. We had a little scare at the end our vacation. The dog sitter was worried about her and she had some stomach distress (not a good thing with our dog) but our sitter did a great job cleaning her up and we were home later that day. Now that things are normal again her system is back to normal again.

Glad to hear Mallory got back to normal when she got home! It was probably just a matter of not being at home and missing her people that upset her system.

We are very sensitive to this needing to be the right puppy, not just a puppy. That’s why I’m actually a little happy that the local puppies didn’t tempt us at all. If any puppy would do, it would’ve been a lot easier to go with one of them. We’re fully prepared to drive home without her if she’s not right, though. I’m just encouraged by a number of small indicators that I’m seeing so far.

June 30th...and DH and I ran this morning to keep from getting a 0 for the month!

We’ve had a rainy, rainy planting season which has totally messed up DH’s farming schedules/routines. It’s bad...he’s leaving 100s of acres unplanted.

Added to that is his parents’ declining health and increased dependence on us. Finding time to run has been difficult, but I don’t work in July so we’re hoping to get back to a routine.

On a happy note, our oldest granddaughter was old enough for 4-H and showed her pigs at our new fairgrounds two weeks ago! After last year’s fair, every barn and building was demolished and new, modern ones were constructed! It’s beautiful and functional and a true accomplishment!

On the weird food topic: I eat peanut butter and dill pickle sandwiches. My recipe for Johnny marzetti: cooked elbow macaroni, browned ground hamburger, and ketchup.

Proudly posting DW's month total: 59.2 miles! Nailed 3-straight days of running on her @DopeyBadger training plan this weekend, including 7 today! In the process of ordering more Tailwind Lemon, this time for both of us to use.

62.4 miles for me, with my last run of the month being 6/17. I was on track for a top-3 mileage month ever, likely over 100 miles, darn it. But today I went out and walked a mile. A little sore. Traditional grab the ankle and pull it back quad stretch is still a bad idea, but I got out of bed pain-free this morning, making it at least 2-straight days for that.

First sweet corn of the season last night for dinner!

My glute injury finally pushed me far enough to shut it down a week early. I had planned to run a HM on June 15th, but decided it was best to start the healing process sooner. And then it was pre-scheduled to take 2 weeks completely off after the HM. I had run the numbers from one training plan to the next one leading me into Disney 2020 and realized that I needed to take some time off in between. If I didn't take the time off, then the numbers suggested I would peak in October instead of January. So I took the time off, dropped my training load, and hopefully will avoid the stagnation late in the training plan. And since I had already it pre-planned I decided just to move it up a week. Take 3 weeks off from running and two weeks off from cycling. It also gave me lots of time with the family. I restarted cycling this past week and now the real training starts on Tuesday. I'm hopeful the time off has been enough to heal the glute. But I'll deal with it appropriately if not. Still got 28 weeks to go! Here's the next training plan: Training Plan.

Not bad since I didn't follow a training plan for the first half of the month, since I was just recovering from my half at the end of May.

Had a great 10 miles this morning with 6 miles at half marathon pace even with a T+D of 140, so I'm feeling good.

A pretty good month for me. Average pace has been creeping down since December. Average heart rate down 3 months in a row. Run cadence up 3 months in a row. Everything moving in the right direction!

It's looking like 100-120 miles per month is my new average rather than 140-150 miles per month like its been in past years.

I haven't run since June 14th. Been in the boot for a week and a half. Tendinitis is feeling good and only some sporadic pain in my heel instead of constant. I bought one of those socks sling things that stretches your foot while you sleep. Gonna predict its going to be pure torture but I'm willing to try it if it helps.

Booked my flights for Wine and Dine and hotel for marathon weekend. Its getting me excited to start running again when I can. Crazy how much you miss running when you can't do it.
