QOTD: Lets discuss hydration a little today. Do you find you pay attention to hydrating during the warmer months of the year v/s the cooler months? (For reference, this is regarding water or sports drinks, but adult hydration is welcomed as well lol)

ATTQOTD: I make it more of a point in the summer months here, but it should be equally important in the winter as well. Regarding adult hydration... College football season is when I am most hydrated.

QOTD: With the extreme cold weather parts of the country are experiencing today and this week, this seemed like a good opportunity to discuss running in the cold weather. What do you wear for cold runs and do you make any changes to your gear? What about hydration... how do you prevent your water from freezing during a run?

Not as cold here in Kentucky as other places for sure. On Tuesday I ran on an indoor track, but yesterday I couldn't overcome the peer pressure to run with a large group in what was considered epic temps for here. Temperature was 7F with a windchill of -5F. It was the coldest temperature I've had the opportunity to run in. It was only 5 miles so I wasn't concerned about hydration. I had one base layer long-sleeved shirt, one 1/4 zip pullover, and a nice brooks running jacket. I also wore mittens. I actually got a little warm, which didn't surprise me. I could've done with 1 less shirt, and I took off the mittens mid-run. Here's a pic and yeah 1 guy decided to go the whole way shirtless. :confused3

ATTQOTD: During the summer, I will take water on any run more than 6 miles. During the winter, I rarely take water unless it's a long run or a serious workout.

ATTQOTD: Heat and humidity are my kryptonite, so I'm very conscious of hydration in the summer. A couple of years ago we started using Replay for our electrolyte drink and I really like it and feel like it works well for us. Not nearly as much sugar as some other electrolyte solutions. During the winter, I certainly still have some of it on long runs, but I don't need to take in nearly as much.

Yes I probably focus more on hydration during the warm months than the winter. I still hydrate during the winter but it’s more of a focus during the summer.

ATTQOTD: I am that person who carries water when most others wouldn't. It just makes me feel better- even if it's unnecessary. That said in the winter I tend not to. Spring/Summer when it's warm I usually do half water, half gatorade- no matter the run length. The humidity is brutal here. Long runs I take tailwind.

During cooler months, I will run up to 10 miles without carrying water with me. Basically, if the training run is long enough to warrant nutrition simulation/training, I'll carry water. Otherwise, I prefer to run unencumbered. When the weather warms up and gets above 85-90 degrees or so, I'll carry water with me for anything over 6 miles. I have a bad habit of confusing heat fatigue and stress with thirst and will drink too much in hotter weather. That's had adverse consequences for my stomach in the past and is something I've got to work on.

ATTQOTD: I can't run well if I don't stay well hydrated. I prefer not to go more than 4 miles without a drink, even in the winter. In summer, no more than 2. As far as adult hydration, I have only ever been a social drinker, but had all but given it up entirely while I was losing weight, never wanted to drink the calories I was allowed to have. Now that I am in maintain mode, its nice to have a drink or two with friends and family again.

ATTQOTD: I always run with water. I have 2 8-ounce clip-on bottles that I use (I usually only bring one along but bring both for longer runs). In the summer when it's 80+ Degrees and 90+ humidity, I will take a few sips every mile, and even then I'm sure I'm sweating out way more than I'm taking in. In the winter, I try to limit sips to every other mile (basically to simulate the frequency of water stops on races).

I do pay more attention in the summer but I really shouldn't. I remember reading that you lose more water hydrating the dry air you breath in the winter than you do in perspiration in the summer.

On a separate note did everyone catch the Arrowhead Ultramarathon reports? 48 hours in the "polar vortex" but with proper gear it is possible.

ATTQOTD: I will bring something to drink with me for runs more than 6 miles in the colder months and more than 4 in the warmer months. I will switch from water to Tailwind usually for runs longer than 10-12 miles.

ATTQOTD: I don't pay particular attention to hydration at any time of year: I drink to thirst year-round. "To thirst" winds up being a lot more in the heat, but it's not something I count by numbers or plan ahead. I use a lot more electrolyte replacement when it's hot.

ATTQOTD: My life motto is basically "hydrate early and often." I'm not super great at that during running, I can easily crank through multiple miles without drinking, but in everyday life I almost always have a water bottle with me.

ATTQOTD: I would say I pay more attention to hydration during the summer. I am not training for anything this winter so my runs are typically 5-6 miles and I do not hydrate during runs at that distance. Last year during marathon training, I introduced myself to mid run hydration by purchasing a hydration belt and learning to leverage drinking fountains along my route which came in handy during the summer - even on shorter runs when it was hot and humid.

I pretty much follow the 1 hour guideline on runs. While I have lost the humidity from the east coast in summer, I do still drink water/Diet Coke/milk constantly all day because of increased evaporation rate and lower blood plasma volume from altitude.

Edit-it doesn’t really differ between seasons on runs.

ATTQOTD: I don't carry anything for runs less than 6 miles summer nor winter. In the summer though I do go straight to the fridge for cold water when I get back. Not so much in the winter. Longer than 6 miles, and I will carry a bit of water.

I'm watching this question of the day closely because I'm re-thinking my hydration plan. I've always just done water except during races. During races I will take water and the powerade (Disney) and gatorade at the end of local races. Now I'm thinking about carrying Nuun with me and sticking to just water at the stops. I'm just really confused about how much additional electrolytes I need as Husband and I increase our overall weekly mileage. He's also getting calf cramps at night new, so I'm thinking that is a electrolyte issue as opposed to form. Although, he has been complaining about his feet during runs. Sigh. So many factors!

Could be shoes, too.
