The Running Thread - 2019

Funny story. He’s an old friend of mine. His name isAaron Dozier, and I used to work with him on the east coast. Look him up on Facebook. Also goes by the name Rock. Nice guy over all, and my favorite yoga teacher I’ve had, but he wasn’t entirely playing a character. He also auditioned for Ogre in Revenge of the Nerds, and admits that it went to the right guy. I can’t fathom why he didn’t read for Ted McGinley’s part.

If I recall correctly, I think McGinley got his part without even auditioning for it. This is one of those silly facts that just stick with you for some reason, but I think the director sure McGinley in a USC calendar and was like that’s my antagonist.

ATTQOTD: We've actually had this happen to us twice in the last two months.

1) DH was doing his usual morning check of our accounts and saw a $700 charge to a hardware store in Tennessee that we've never heard of. Well the CC company handled it and we got new cards. We figured out that the information from it had probably been stolen when we ate at Olive Garden. That was the only time it had been out of our sight in over a month.

2) This time, it was the card that DH gets an alert on his phone every time there is a charge. So an alert that a charge of $1500 from SAMs popped up. He called me to ask if I'd spent that at SAMs (as if!) and then contacted the cc company. Come to find out they had gotten into our SAMs account and bought a gaming system. It was actually going to ship to our house! I had received a confirmation email (that I wouldn't have discovered until hours later when I check my personal email at home). So we were able to cancel the order and then change all of our login information. And, we are waiting on new cards.

I'm still wondering how they we're going to get it from our house. Stalk us until it's delivered and then grab it?

Knock on wood - we have not had our CC stolen; to this point anyway. Our card company is pretty hyper vigilant so we have had our card cancelled a few times when on trips even when we inform them. But I suppose this is a much better option than fraud.

ATTQOTD stolen credit cards: It happened to us many years ago and every charges got reversed. Now, in Canada, there is always the Chip system so the credit card never leaves me. I use Tap a lot which is capped at 100$. Once or twice the CC company contacted us to say that our card was compromised but we could always keep using it for in-persons purchases until the replacement arrived. I have a different, no monthly charge, bare-bone card that we use only if the other one doesn’t.

QOTD: Yesterday afternoon while driving home I started to ponder how each of us get to what we consider a comfortable pace for running. My thought is what makes a 8 minute pace easy for one person while 10 minute pace for someone else. I guess the question is how did you determine what your starting comfortable pace is? Also, do you think it would be possible if when you started to say I want "x" pace to be what my normal runs are at? For example lets say 9 min/mi is where you are today and is comfortable, do you think if you started with a 7:30 min/mi and did not know any better that, that pace would be your normal? I realize there are a lot of factors from person to person on this question but I was curious what everyone thought?

ATTQOTD: Determining my comfortable pace when I first started running was by determining what pace I needed to run to run a 5k less than 25 minutes. I set that as the bar and kept practicing until I got there. Over time my easy pace has gone up or down depending on my activity level. I just thought, what if I said run at 8 min/mi pace for as long as I could and keep repeating that until became normal for me would work or if it isn't just that simple... or maybe it is.

*This is probably a poorly worded question, sorry if its confusing.

I get the point of the question but I don't think the answer is that easy. I think there are many factors that go into determining what's comfortable from current fitness level, weather conditions, and your brain. :D When I first started running I couldn't run for more than a minute before I was sucking wind and my pace was in the 13's. As my fitness improved it got easier obviously. At my best, before my injury I was able to run in the 9's easily for miles with my race pace in the high 7's/low 8's. But my mind tells me what's hard and what's easy. Sometimes you need to push through the slightly hard in order to get to the next level of fitness and eventually what was once hard becomes easier. But I also use my HRM to keep track of my HR as I use that to tell me what is hard for that given day.

I'm a results type person. I always want to be better than I was. So on a hot and humid summer day I might push myself to match a pace from a different day if not for my HRM to tell me what my heart is saying is hard.

I often run races with a runDisney AP drawstring backpack for that very reason. I barely feel it during the race and it makes carrying the post race stuff so much easier.

I was looking for an extra set of Dopey 2019 medals and when I saw the ebay price, I decided to just buy a shadowbox with extra medals. May as well get something useful out of that price. I opted to get the WDW Marathon Weekend framed medals with Mickey sketch so I had to leave my medals with Disney at Epcot in The Art of Disney.

I'll list a top 5 and brief reasons why.

1. 2017 Kessel Run Medal. This marked my dream medal if you will and also marked the finale of 18+ months worth of training including twice in the worst time of year professionally.
2. 2019 Walt Disney World Marathon. My first marathon, my first Mickey medal, and the realization of the dream I once thought impossible.
3. 2015 Star Wars Half Marathon. Another dream medal and patterned after the medal given to Luke and Han at the end of the original movie. This medal has a Chewbacca ribbon too!
4. 2017 Coast to Coast. While it's my second Coast to Coast medal, it gets the nod over 2012 because it has both U.S. Disney castles.
5. 2011 Disneyland Half Marathon. My first race medal ever so it has sentimental value, but I also truly love it.

Honorable mentions: BB-8 2017 Light Side 10K, 2015, 2016 Rebel Challenge medals, 2017 Dark Side Challenge medal, 2017 Avengers Half for firmly planting the marathon dream.

As much as I wish runDisney would make all the medals finishers medals, I'm glad they at least award any challenge medal to finishers only. Honestly, if I had known that just starting the race would have gotten me that darn medal during my very first half marathon, I fear I would have stopped right then and there, half a mile into the course, been handed that medal, and decided that I'm never going to be a runner. Since that moment where I wanted to quit less than half a mile into my very first half marathon, I have learned so much about myself and done things I never even believed were possible. And none of it would have happened if I had pulled to the side. And I can guarantee that when Star Wars races were announced, I would have told myself "too bad I'm not a runner because I can never do that. I even failed at attempting it." Instead that announcement spurred me to greater challenges and in time resulted in me attempting the one distance I never thought I would.

For that reason, you won. You learned about yourself. You pushed yourself outside your comfort zone. She never did and that's why she failed and continues to fail and I suspect all the people that are sitting next to her on the curb waiting to get swept are much the same way.

QOTD: Non running related question today. Some POS made a duplicate of our CC and decided to make some purchases. Lucky for us it started just two days ago so the amount did not get out of hand, but the inconvenience of this whole process sucks! For todays question I wanted to ask if you have ever had your card info stolen and what was the outcome?

ATTQOTD: Yes and the unauthorized charges will be removed from our account. Frustrating part is not having our card for another 3-5 days and having to take care of some other details. Also I HATE a THIEF!!!!

I haven't yet but I am very aware. I keep minimal money in my checking attached to my debit, I keep it all in my savings and move it as I need it. I also have one card I use for gas and store purchases that has a low limit so if it does get taken the amount of damage that can be done is minimal, because I NEVER trust the banks to do the right thing. If they do, great, but I assume anything that is stolen I will have to eat.

I'm still wondering how they we're going to get it from our house. Stalk us until it's delivered and then grab it?

They wouldn't have to. They probably planned to track the package, so they know within minutes when it's been delivered.

ATYQOTD: Only once that I remember. It was my debit card and my bank was wonderful. I filed a fraud complaint and they immediately credited the money back into my account. They did tell me that if the complaint was denied they would take the money back though! Our bank is very good about locking our card when we are traveling and forget to notify them. Which usually happens in the middle of nowhere, trying to buy gas. A quick phone call and it is usually resolved though. DD29 was driving from Colorado to California, straight thru all night and WF locked her debit card. She called me in the middle of the night from a gas station in the middle of Nevada I believe and we had to get the bank to unlock her card. Luckily they are available 24/7.

ATTQOTD-we've had multiple incidents of fraud over the years and the card companies have been great to deal with.

One of the more recent events happened on move in day for our daughter at college. I checked my online balance and noticed over $20,000 in fraudulent charges. Yikes!
Someone had made 3 large purchases at a fancy art dealership. We had been to Europe a few weeks earlier and guess that someone helped themselves to our number.

Also important to always check your statements and analyze all charges, I've seen $1.99 charges that were not mine. Guess the fraudsters hoped we wouldn't notice such a small amount.

Amazed by how common someone getting their info stolen in one form or another. It's really sad. Ours was a Chase Visa as well and they did not notify me. We use that card for everything so I check the account regularly to see our balance, which of course after Disney was higher than normal. But it seemed a little to high, so I started to look a but closer and found 4 transaction that happened in Texas. No way it was us. So, I talked the CC folks and they asked if we both had our cards, which we did. I asked why she asked and she said that each transaction was made by swiping the card. Apparently what happened is someone made a duplicate of our cards and was buying stuff at gas stations to test it out before probably going big. It was around $400 total and the CC company has already reversed our charges. Just waiting on new cards now.

QOTD: Todays question is from a fellow poster. I hope I am wording it well enough to get you question asked correctly. What do you do for strength training when you do not have a gym membership or a at home gym?

ATTQOTD: In the past, and need to add soon, would do things like squats, push ups, burpees, leg raises, bear crawls which seemed to work well. I also purchased a really good jump rope which helped a lot as well. I think runners world on youtube will also have some things to suggest. Hope this helps!

QOTD: Todays question is from a fellow poster. I hope I am wording it well enough to get you question asked correctly. What do you do for strength training when you do not have a gym membership or a at home gym?
ATTQOTD: That's a great question! I only do strength training at home, minus any equipment beyond hand weights and a yoga mat. At least one day a week, I do an hour of Power Yoga, which uses body weight. Another day every other week, I either do Pilates or ballet, both of which also use body weight for strength-building. And one day every other week, I do a circuit of moves with hand weights and body weight: squats with triceps dips, side lunges with shoulder raises, push ups, alternating lunges with biceps curls, planks, etc.

I tend to focus on core training when I don't have a gym. I will also do some push ups and stuff like that. I don't like to do much else without weight.

I use the FitBod app to do at home workouts. It allows you to select what equipment you have available or set it to body weight only options. It will build workouts based on that info. It also tries to calculate the fatigue of each muscle group and builds the workouts based on what is "freshest".

!

Yes, luckily it was for small charges. The bank said that thieves sometimes test small amounts to make sure it goes through, and then they blitz it with big purchases. Luckily, I caught it early. The most annoying part was updating my card number with several auto-pay bills.

QOTD: Todays question is from a fellow poster. I hope I am wording it well enough to get you question asked correctly. What do you do for strength training when you do not have a gym membership or an at home gym?
I am a firm believer in body weight training as an easy way to get a quick strength workout in. You don't need a gym membership or even an extensive at home gym. Youtube has tons of free workouts you can follow along with. Right now my routine is trying to take a break at work once an hour and doing 10 crunches, 10 push ups, 10 squats, and a 30 second plank. Sometimes I can get 8 in, sometimes only 3, but it's an easy little break. Otherwise, at home I have a kettlebell that I like to use. That really works the muscles. I also have a gym membership but I can't remember the last time I used it. And even if I did the weights scare me!

If anyone saw Tailwind’s Instagram/Twitter post the other day from the marathon, that was me running through the castle  The Facebook post was my husband and I with our medals.

ATTQOTD: I teach Pure Barre which relies heavily on using your own body weight and resistance. In classic, we use hand weights, a ball and a tube. Empower is cardio based and uses a platform, ankle/wrist weights and hand weights. And our new class, Reform, uses weighted resistance tubes connected to the barre and baseboards. All of the equipment is completely optional though. In fact, I encourage people that are just starting or are a little hesitant to drop the weights or tubes until they are comfortable with the tiny movements and isometric holds.

Since I have the knowledge, it’s easy for me to do everything at home or in a hotel. There is a paid service online called Pure Barre on demand and you could get by with just using a chair for stability. Anytime I’m looking for a guided workout at home though, I always search YouTube. There’s such a plethora of great videos to follow. If you don’t have hand weights, you could use soup cans, pasta sauce jars or gallons of water.

QOTD: Todays question is from a fellow poster. I hope I am wording it well enough to get you question asked correctly. What do you do for strength training when you do not have a gym membership or a at home gym?

I'm doing 80 Day Obsession (Beach Body) right now as a supplement to my cycling training. It only requires some dumbbells, resistance loops, and sliders. The loops and sliders were only $9 (link on amazon). I'll be honest, over the years I haven't done much strength training. I used to do 2 days per week of a Medicine Ball Routine (link) and then did the McMillan Core Rountine once in a while. But never kept either of them up for very long or did them much more than 2x per week (mostly because it was so repetitive). But I'm on Day 35 of 80DO right now. It's 6 days per week and about 45-60 min per session (or about 4.5-5 hours per week). The nice part is it's really 78 unique workouts in that they switch up the rep count, weights used, order of workouts within days, workouts in a week, etc. So the program stays really fresh for the entire 13 weeks. And I can say unequivocally that the program does work. I am significantly stronger and can tell my body is adapting to the training. Whether that translates into faster running times is an unknown, but it is certainly making me a fitter human being. I've already mapped out the next 13 week segment to include it. The bonus is my wife is doing it too and I'm really just there to be her motivator.

Attqotd: at the moment-push ups, (chair assisted)pull ups, about 5 different lunge variations, jump squats, single leg deadlifts.

I also added in bow flex adjustable dumbbells recently for some added shoulder/back work to assist with my pull ups.

I don't ever use a gym. I use my own body weight like many have said like squats, jump squats, planks, push ups, leg raises, etc. I have hand weights I use. I'm not the best at all these things that's for sure and know I could do more core work especially. My running is on a break with extremely less mileage right now so this the base of most my workouts for a little while versus being just an add on to the run. And I can tell I'm going to be sore after this mornings workout that wasn't even that much.
