The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: Mostly asphalt (mainly when on roads, but once in a while on sidewalks, there are asphalt sidewalks in some places), followed by concrete sidewalks (they don't do roads in concrete up here), then maybe a little bit of dirt, followed by a miniscule amount of brick/cobblestone. :)

I greatly prefer asphalt, but there's also 2 different kinds of concrete sidewalks and one I prefer over the other if we're running on sidewalks. Anywhere there are brand new poured sidewalks, the kind where the concrete is poured there, or like most of the sidewalks I would encounter at my parents when I visited them in FL... those kind I hate. We also have a lot of older, lumpier, more uneven concrete sidewalks around here that I think are concrete slabs that were placed on the ground after they were hard. They're thinner and things like tree roots and what not lift them up. Anyway... I much prefer those older ones even though they're lumpier. I can absolutely feel the difference between them and the newer kind make my lower back hurt.

The brick/cobblestone can be ok to run on, although some of the cobblestone is really ooooold and uneven and you need to watch your footing so you don't twist an ankle on an uneven brick. The newer cobblestone that is nice and even... fine to run on in warmer months, but a complete hazard to run on if there's any kind of moisture in the air and it's anywhere near freezing. They get SO slippery and since the bricks are still smooth and the seams between the bricks are still perfect, running on them is like trying to run on a skating rink. I will run out in the road in that weather instead... I'd rather run on the uneven historic ones in that weather. :)

Edit: I guess I didn't count treadmill, which is right now all of it. :D OTF has these nice squishy Freemotion treadmills that are like running on marshmellows and I'm going to be sad to go back outside to real earth, although I will also be happy because I can only stomach treadmill running in an environment like an OTF class. I cannot stand it when I'm just running to run.

ATTQOTD: Mostly concrete sidewalks. Sometimes asphalt if it’s safe to be on the road.

I’m getting more into trail running and our local trails are dry sand, wet sand, dirt, mud, just roots, gravel, etc. Makes for interesting runs!

@LSUlakes hope you feel better soon. I got the stomach flu on the way home from WDW and I’m still not eating much. Was a great way to lose vacation weight though...

Attqotd: 100% snow currently. All paved/unpaved trails are covered until mid-spring and I am not running in the roads with the drunk rednecks, bros, and yuppies in their jacked up trucks, wrxs, and suvs

In summer a blend of asphalt, gravel, rocks, dirt, grass.

ATTQOTD: 80% concrete sidewalks, 15% asphalt road and 5% asphalt trails. Maybe I should add more roads when safe to lessen the pounding my legs are taking.

ATTQOTD: Weekdays is 50% concrete 50% asphalt (first half parking lot/roads until I get to sidewalk for second half of out and back). Weekends 95% asphalt 5% concrete.

I have the option to do some gravel/dirt road running at lunch, but I have found the mix on the road tears up my shoes, so in the interest of NOT halving the lives of my shoes, I avoid it.

ATTQOTD: 97% crushed limestone or dirt trails through beautiful meadows and forest preserves, 2% Disney races, and 1% random races on asphalt. I agree completely with @Professor_Cookie ; I don't think I would be a runner if that meant pounding the pavement.

Of course the implications of that can be a bit daunting in the winter. The trail I ran on yesterday here in Chicagoland was a mixture of ice, hardpack snow, and 4 inch deep crusted snow that I broke through. It was a tough slog, but not enough to consider a treadmill or the streets.

ATTQOTD: mainly asphalt and currently some treadmill. I mainly run in the roads as I hate running on the sidewalks and will only do it on busy roads. Although some of the sidewalks around here are asphalt and I prefer those over the concrete ones.

ATTQOTD: Mostly asphalt/concrete & treadmill. There is one route that I run, when if I go for a longer run I’ll run on some dirt/trail and even a small wooden boardwalk.

No kidding. I run these trails in the summer, and worry about the rattlesnakes. Now every rustle in the sage brush is going to make me think about this. The crazy thing is that (according to the local news report), he did everything right, including not running away, raising his arms, and making a lot of noise to try to scare it off.

QOTD: What type of surfaces do you run on regularly? Which do you prefer of those type?

It depends on how much trail running I'm doing at that time. Most of my trails are wooded trails so packed dirt with the natural occurrence of roots, rocks, etc. The majority of my running is still on roads and a lot of the blacktop roads near me have been switched to concrete over the last few years. Good for longevity, bad for my running.

I much prefer blacktop to concrete. I definitely feel the softer landing and better recoil you get from blacktop but it isn't enough to alter my routes just to get more blacktop and less concrete.

I haven't done any trails in a couple months so right now it is about 80% concrete 20% blacktop.

This is really late, but...

January totals:

Distance: 79.35 miles
Duration: 14:11:33 hours
Average Pace: 10:44

The bulk of that running was doing Dopey. Getting back into running has been rough. I (and most of my family) have been sick most of the three weeks since I got back from WDW and now weather refuses to cooperate. Hopefully back to the grind tomorrow to prep for a June BQ attempt.

ATTQOTD: Currently treadmill and snow. In the warmer months it's mostly asphalt with a little bit of trail running, which will be ramping up more this summer. They all have their advantages & disadvantages, but I guess if I had to pick one it would be asphalt because I can zone out and really get into a rhythm without having to worry about slipping or tripping or boredom.

QOTD: What type of surfaces do you run on regularly? Which do you prefer of those type?

Mostly asphalt and concrete roads and running paths, with a crushed gravel trail every so often too. True trails are a bit of a drive from the center of the city, unfortunately.

@LSUlakes I hope you feel better soon. All of us here will do our best to add zillions of posts today to give you a goal to chase as you catch up on things. ;)
