ATTQOTD (yesterday): I did watch, but mainly because I couldn't find anything else on TV and had already cleared my DVR. I prefer SEC football over the NFL anyway, but the game was pretty boring overall to me. It was cool that it was in Atlanta since I live so close and have been to Mercedes Benz numerous times though. My favorite commercials were the Bud Light/GOT and the NFL 100 commercial, so funny! I was not overly impressed with the halftime show, mainly because I was very distracted by Adam Levine's sparkly necklace. LOL.

Yep, I was also excited about the Supra. Not that I will buy one, I cannot justify a two door car anytime soon. But glad to see Toyota doing something besides boring.

Boring sells! And in mass quantities! Attempts to do 'interesting' cars were those badged in the US as Scion, and no one wanted them. And as for sporty cars, the ISF was nice, but who could afford that?

The second thing out of my mouth was, "Will they bring back the Celica next?!" Hi, I'm V, and I'm a car nerd.

Not in the next 8 years. If they magically sell out of the Supra (they won't. Have you seen the FT86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FRS? these were supposed to be heirs to the Supra legacy) then scrambling to put out a Celica would blip someone's radar. Current mass production development is in the 5 year range.

After a several month layoff due to a quadriceps injury, it was great to be back running and training.

I only had a short amount of time to train for this race, but hopefully the plan that @DopeyBadger came up with for me gets the job done. This would not be a PR attempt, but it would be my second fastest official result should I pull it off...

Have you ever considered a time-based ultra? (Time-based as in "however many laps you can cover in XX hrs). I did an 8 hour race back in 2016, but have been thinking about trying another, longer one sometime this spring after Boston but before I begin ramping up for fall marathons. It's an interesting format because there's no real pressure to run a specific number of miles, other than whatever pressure you put on yourself. There's a May 12hr/24hr event in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, VA, coming up. That's pretty close to you, right? Just sayin'...

I have looked at the time based ultras, but I'm not sure what I think about them. I have a harder time mentally dealing with running for time versus distance, if that makes sense. I'm very goal- and endpoint-oriented, so it's much easier for me to say I'm going to run for 50 miles and let the time be the independent variable versus saying I'm going to run for x hours and let the distance be the independent variable. The first feels like it has a tangible endpoint that I'm striving for, while the second just feels like I'm doing something just for the sake of doing it rather than feeling purposeful. I don't think there's anything wrong with that approach to a race, it just doesn't work well with my mentality.

speaking of Japanese sports cars, Acura was here for the film festival and I had to drive past a new NSX just sitting on the sidewalk everyday. It looks like some nasty fun.

In regards to the conversation above. I have done two 12 hour races and I really enjoyed the races. It is a very different feel to think “I have run two hours and have ten hours to go”. I found that it really forced me to stay focused in the present moment. If I am remembering right the races I did had about 5-7 mile loops; that got difficult. Circling around and around again was challenging. But the camaraderie was so awesome and the looping meant lots of interaction and support from one another. The thing here is the strongest runners are still out there at the end with you.

In my second to last loop I got the opportunity to run with someone who was prepping for the Leadville 100. She was such a strong runner. She came up behind me (looping me for who knows how many times) slowed up to ask how I was doing and what my goals were. She then paced with me for a few miles and then blazed off. In a distance race I am sure she would have been long done with her race by then.

There is still plenty of opportunity to push yorself, set goals but instead of saying I will do this 50 mile race in x-hours your focus is on what distance can I cover in the time they have given me. The motivation towards the end to stay in front of a course cutoff to get in one last loop is pretty intense. Maybe not everyone’s cup of tea but I did enjoy the two I ran in.

QOTD: What type of surfaces do you run on regularly? Which do you prefer of those type?

ATTQOTD: I really only encounter two types of surfaces; asphalt and concrete. I prefer asphalt of the two because in my mind it feels softer than concrete.

Sorry for missing yesterdays QOTD: I woke up with a stomach bug from hell! I am also way behind on the thread and work is keeping me from catching up at the moment. I will try to catch up in the next few days.

Concrete for the most part whether it’s sidewalk or roadway. I prefer that or asphalt.

ATTQOTD: It's probably about 88% concrete, 7% asphalt, 3% dirt/crushed shell/sand mix, 2% grass. My favorites are dirt/crushed shell/sand mix and grass, but there isn't much of that available, and grass is off limits during monsoon season.

ATTQOTD: Mostly asphalt or dirt/gravel roads. I've been having some foot pain that seems to be caused by pounding the pavement, so I've been doing 1-2 days a week at the local college where I can do the entire run on a combination of rubber track, grass, and trails.

Based on 'feel', I prefer the track and trails but taking into account drive-time, scenery, etc., I prefer the roads.

ATTQOTD: I run in mostly asphalt and concrete as well, with a less than 5% dirt trail mixed in. @LSUlakes, I still remember my X-country coach from 25 years ago telling us to run on asphalt over concrete because it’s softer on the joints. I never truly verified it but it’s been stuck in my memory. One other thing I try to do is run on any dirt patch on the side of the road. My podiatrist had me bounce a golf ball on pavement vs dirt and see the difference in bounce...that’s the same decrease in impact on the joints by running on dirt.

@LSUlakes, hope you feel better there.

ATTQOTD: I would say 75% on asphalt, 24% on concrete and 1% on crushed gravel. Once in a blue moon I'll do a dirt trail run but those are pretty rare.

Random aside: in summer (FL), I can totally feel the difference between asphalt and concrete - on a blistering hot day in August, there's a tiny bit of suction on the bottoms of my shoes with each liftoff... because the outsoles melt a bit from the heat.

ATTQOTD: 100% asphalt. We have no sidewalks here, lol. And I won't run off road due to my tendency to trip over everything and hurt myself!
