The Running Thread - 2016

Hi guys. I didn't know if there was a welcome thread so i thought i'd just introduce myself here. Been a lurker for a while, but everyone seems nice so i thought i'd say hi. Currently registered for Dopey, Rebel challenge plus 5k, and Dark Side challenge plus 5k.

And to participate in the discussion above, i don't race every race. i rundisney for fun, and i do other races for time. I have disney PRs and race PRs.

Thanks and i hope to talk to you all. :))

This is me too! I'm doing all of the above except for the Rebel 5K (I'll still be on a disney cruise :rotfl:)

Welcome!

I literally just posted in my run journal that I'm eating a lean cuisine for lunch. So now I need to go look in the mirror and ask myself if people really need to know that, bwahaha!
OMG and last night I posted a picture of Taffy Apples that I was eating on instagram! This is true...some people here who follow me have seen it. I feel like I need to reevaluate my postings! :)
:rotfl2:

FWIW, I find myself going back and forth between "who would post THAT?" and reminding myself that it's their account, so they're free to post what they wish.

Related note: I just realized I don't follow you on Instagram, so I had to go ahead and remedy that. :)

/
ATTQOTD: I do not post anything running related (or really too much else) to my personal social media accounts (FB, Insta, Twitter)... those "friends" probably don't even know I run. I "might" post a race picture after my 10K in Nov and most likely will after the PHM in Feb.

That being said, I created a completely different instagram account that I use as my running journal. I post every run, so it's been fun to look back and see how things change in just a few months. I only follow other runners (especially rundisney) and Disney accounts on it, and have connected with some neat/inspirational runners! I often think my posts are monotonous for others, but I post them for my own reference not to gain followers.

ATTQOTD: I manage social media for a living, so yeah... I totally overshare. ;) I probably share 65-70% of my runs on Facebook - I usually have a pretty pic from the route or something interesting that happened, or just a funny quip about running in general to share. A large portion of my Friends run, too, so we often converse about runs via Facebook. My view is that I post things on my page that I'd share with people in face-to-face conversation. Folks are welcome to Unfollow or Unfriend me if they don't like seeing what I post. :)

ATYQOTD: Low tech here. I use the free version of Map My Run to track runs and recently to track shoe use. I just threw away my two oldest pairs of shoes and wear others that still look all right casually.

ATTQOTD: I only have a Facebook account. No Instagram, Twitter, Snap Chat, etc. I post rarely. I mostly wish people happy birthday and like the things they post! I am learning how to post here!

In my defense, I grew up with a rotary dial phone (grandparents had a party line!); I stayed up "late" to see Walter Cronkite report from the first moon landing (remember that scene in Spaceship Earth?); calculators were invented just before I went to college and were so expensive that I couldn't afford one (Calculus I, II, and III were all done by pencil on paper); computers filled a room and could probably do less than my phone can now; to register for college courses, and we asked each professor for a punch card for the registrar to use to set up our schedules; and I was hard at work the day Elvis died! Posting on social media isn't really something that is comfortable for me although I DID post after I ran the Disney World Marathon in January!

On a lighter note, I LOVE pictures of people eating apples much more than the political rants I am seeing now! Can't wait for Avengers Superheroes Weekend (Extra perk: the election will be over).

Can I amend my answer? I hope I didn't offend anyone with my response -- I do really like seeing social media posts on all kinds of topics (I mean, I actively seek out runDisney training journals and trip reports to read daily!! And, have learned so much from them...) I am definitely an introvert, so have a funny relationship with social media in general (it's great, because I can keep up with people without actually having to talk to them :surfweb: , but it can be scary to post (what if nobody likes my post?!) and sometimes feels overwhelming). Hard to explain, but a weird love/hate relationship. So, keep on posting away:flower3: (as a nutritionists, I fully support the posting of apples, even ones covered in chocolate!)

Looks like I'm back in. In January, I did my first running event over a 5k, the WDW Marathon and got hooked on Run Disney, then found out about the Coast to Coast medal and did the Dumbo Challenge at Disneyland over Labor Day. I was thinking that might be it for a while, although I've been thinking I might do Dopey in 2018. I have a friend doing the LA Marathon and he's been trying to get me to do it. This past weekend, one of our close friends from college died of pancreatic cancer, and we decided to run the LA Marathon in his honor, and try to fundraise with our friends. So going for Marathon #2 in March! I grew up in LA and I love the course. Now I have to kick up the training.

ATTQOTD: I don't post anything about training, and very little about the actual races. But, when I think about it, I should do more about the races. Seeing friends celebrate their races was part of the inspiration to get into running to begin with! I should pass that on.

And there's this:

ATTQOTD: I usually only post about races or (rarely)if something super noteworthy happens on a training run. I'm getting more into Instagram recently, though, so looking forward to posting (and seeing posts) from W&D weekend!

ATTQOTD: I don't post my runs to FB, although I do sometimes post a picture during the run to Instagram and FB. I am too embarrassed about how slow they are to post the actual run. :o

I don't mind posting pretties like this, though! From my run on Sunday :)

Back from the Lake Powell Half Marathon - ran all the way from Arizona to Utah! From Standard Time to Daylight Savings Time, so an interesting situation where chip time was 2:53 (a new PR for DW, and done without her getting hurt, so mission accomplished!) but clock time was 1:53 (started at 6:30, finished at 8:23) - or maybe we finished at 10:23 for a clock time of 3:53 - so confusing. It was an anniversary trip for us - celebrating 7 wonderful years together! (well ok, we were married in 1990) - and DD (Dopey Daughter) had Fall Break from VT and was able to join us, making it even more special!

And for every time I get asked, this is why I run:

You and I would get along well (only, you know...separately, in our own homes...lol)! I too am very introverted. When I first started running, I posted about it a lot. Now, I pretty much only post if I do a race. It has nothing to do with what other people say or think, or if I think anyone will want to read it. I just...I don't know... I'm just not in a really sharing place. Maybe because I've had a rough road the last couple of years, and I don't want people chiming in on it. It's hard to explain.

I will read any and all social media posts right now that are NOT about the election. #isitoveryet

Amen to that! I have had to take a big step back from social media, because I just can't take it any more. Can't we all just agree to disagree, and still be nice to each other? Seriously.
