The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I enter all my shoes in Garmin, Strava, and RunningAhead. I find it easier to track the shoes in RunningAhead.

To me, Garmin and Strava are not as intuitive when changing what shoe used for a workout.

I usually have two shoes in rotation, one of the retired shoes I use to walking/mowing/etc. If that is not wore out yet, the retired shoes will go to my 16 year old, until his feet get too big, which probably won't be much longer. I usually will start looking at wear and how they feel around 300 miles.

QOTD: Do you track miles on shoes or do you retire them by calendar time? What criteria do you use to retire training shoes (e.g. How many miles)? What about racing shoes? Do they still look good? What do you do with them once you already have a pair for yard work, casual use, ect.?
I track them on a 450 mile max. That being said if they start to look really worn before that I will retire them sooner. I'm working on my first pair of dedicated 'racing shoes' (previously all racing shoes were also training shoes) so no telling how long they'll last. I use my current retired pair for walking. I know at least one person who uses theirs for a final mud run before calling it quits on them.

Let me know if you would like to revise your goal time for your race this weekend. Best of luck and I look forward to hearing how it goes!
I would revise to 2:04:59. I'm not thinking I'll make that but it would still be a PR if I do. I just don't see PRing by enough to make it a 2:03. We'll see though.

You can update my goal to 2 hours.

Make sure to keep an eye out for when your model of shoes gets "retired" for the newer model to come out, because they'll go on sale as places try to move inventory. I run in Brooks Adrenalines and Brooks is getting ready to release the 17 version, so all of the 16 version shoes are marked down 25% (hopefully they'll go down even further, i'm gonna keep checking both Running Warehouse and the Brooks site). I'm stocking up! :)

And pay attention to differences from model to model too. Every few models, Asics makes changes to the Kayano that don't agree with my feet, so I have to stock up on the ones I like before they disappear.

Very true. That's why I want to stock up on the 16s...the 14s were perfect, the 15s were AWFUL, and the 16s are back to perfect. Haven't tried on the 17s yet...why can't Brooks just keep the Adrenalines exactly as I like them?! Please and thank you. princess:

Seeing this post makes me want to barf, lol! I am a total basket case, a bundle of nervous energy this week. I am more nervous for this marathon than my first one. I am hoping to PR and you can revise my goal to sub 5:30. I'm secretly hoping for sub 5:15 but because I'm a nervous wreck, I'm not feeling confident enough to have you put that in writing. :crazy2:

Shoes - I track in excel and once I get around 300-350 (asics nimbus) they are done, I can tell in that my knees & bottoms of feet hurt more. The bottoms look worn but I think the insides go flat & I need cushion so I can't tell just by looking at them if they are shot, so it's by feel & seeing the mileage on them. I don't have separate training or racing shoes. I have a pile of shot shoes that are for whatever but not running or walking long.

I just started tracking miles on my shoes in an excel spreadsheet with my two most recent pairs. Before I pretty much just went by feel.

Ugh, I hope mine don't go on sale now that I just bought them lol! The Brooks Transcend 3's that I have are completely different from the 2's. The 2's wouldn't work for me at all. But the 3's aren't on sale so maybe they aren't making a 4 yet? Idk, lol.

I rely on Strava to track my shoes because I would never remember to track them otherwise. :) It's not too difficult to change shoes once you get the pair set up. There's just a dropdown on the screen if you edit the workout. I usually always am editing it to change the title or the type of run it was (for races or long runs) so I just change it then. :) It is a little annoying to get to the place to edit the shoe list and add the shoes in the first place since it's not in the menus.

I have a random running app that I use to log my runs in and track the mileage on my shoes. 250 miles is generally when I start considering retiring a shoe. Thats usually when I start feeling more foot and leg pain after longer runs. Once they're retired from running they usually become walking shoes. Old walking shoes become camping shoes. Camping shoes then get thrown out.

I'm on Brooks' email list and they actually sent me an email about the price drop - that's how I found out. Maybe try to get on their list? :)

ATTQOTD: I was using mapmyrun on my phone until I bought a Vivoactive HR last month. I debated between the Forerunner 235 and the Vivoactive for a ridiculous amount of time. I went that route as it was $80 cheaper and had a lot of features. The watch is big (pretty boxy height wise) and wish there was other color options, but there are alternative screens that can be downloaded that give a nice viewing options. The heart rate feature is nice, but honestly haven't been doing anything different on runs to train in specific zones. The recovery thing would be nice on the 235, but hoping I'll try out some of the other pluthera of activity options on the Vivoactive to seal the deal. All the 235 talk has me questioning my decision again, but the Vivoactive has been a very nice watch so far and it makes me want to move around more at work to try and PR on the daily steps and stairs counters.

You just described my inner turmoil last night while at Best Buy. I ended up going with the 235 because of the round face rather than the big rectangular one. Not sure how I feel about my choice yet. I miss my fitbit app. The dashboard is super nice. Probably take me a little time to adjust to the new (to me) Garmin interface.

I've been considering this a lot lately and how I should phase shoes out. I'm on my 2nd pair of shoes now since I started running. So far it feels like a 3 month cadence for me before I replace. Not sure what mileage that equates to as I did wear them a lot during the summer to work since I was walking every day at lunch (1.5-2 miles) plus runs 2-3 times a week.

I think with my new pair, I'm going track in Garmin or Strava.

Thanks, just joined the list. And I feel better since they are still full price on their site too. :)

In the past, I have just replaced by feel. Once my feet or knees started to ache after runs that they shouldn't normally I knew it was time to replace the shoes. This time around I am trying something different. I put two pairs into service at the same time and am tracking the mileage on them through the Garmin Connect app. I'm hoping to see what effect shoe rotation has on their lifespan as well as get a better feel for acceptable mileage. After retiring a pair they just go into general rotation for wearing around the house or for yard work or what not. Running shoes are all I wear these days and my day to day shoes are the same model as my runners.

I also like JackRabbit when shoes go on clearance. they're still at the 25% mark as well but I've gotten my Glycerins 50% off from the site before.

ATTQOTD: I use the Garmin app for tracking shoes. I just have to remember to go in after and input which shoes I was wearing. I don't know yet where my cut-off will be, as I cycle through several pair (and switched off zero-drop in the spring), so I'm a ways away from 300 on any one of them. I think it will depend on the shoe, some of which I like better than others. Also, I have a couple adidas with the boost midsole (which I love), and I have read that they can last a little longer, so I'll be testing that as well.

QOTD: I use strava and it pings me at 250 miles. I take them out of my regular rotation based on a number of objective/subjective factors. Typically this is between 300 and 350 miles. Lately I haven't gotten rid of many. I used to move everything down the line... you know, running shoe ==> casual shoe ==> yard work shoe. However, I've run quite a bit more in the last year and I have several pair that "look" good on top, but I wouldn't really run in anymore. Occasionally I'll grab a pair of those for a crappy weather day, but I probably need to drop these off somewhere.
