The Running Thread - 2016

Today I worked out my training plan for the Turkey Trot 5 miler. I'm going to do a hybrid of Hal Higon's 8k novice and intermediate plans. I'm doing the long run miles of the intermediate and the cross training, but staying with three running days which is the novice plan.

My goals for October are:
- Run the three scheduled a week (things happen, but goal is to get the runs in even if the scheduled day needs to change)
- Tuesday Pilates classes - focus on breathing. I get sloppy towards the end.
- Cross train as scheduled
- One rest day a week

It's a stretch of a training schedule for me, but really want to keep the momentum going to try and avoid cold weather excuses.

There was a quote that I saw today that I thought I'd share as I think with our training goals it might resonate:
"Best thing about the future is that it comes one day at a time." -Abraham Lincoln

I can't believe only a few hours after making a "creepy clown pool" joke, I find this in my town's patch.
(Trigger warning; scary clown picture)

Apparently the park that I run around had a menacing clown hanging out at it last night and they have pictures. NOPE! I know he didn't "do" anything, and it's likely just copycat from all the other national clown things going on, but it still gives me pause to head out for an evening run.
I must be a masochist because I clicked on the link despite your warning.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE??!?! :faint: That picture is the creepiest thing ever!!!

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?

ATTQOTD:

I use a fuel belt that can hold four 8oz water bottles and a little pouch that I put my GU's in. I only use 3 of the bottles as 4 of them get to be to heavy at the early stages of a run. I use it for my longer runs that exceed 1.5 hours in the winter, but during the summer I will take them out for 45 minute runs. The only race I use them for is a full, unless a half is part of a training run in which I am running a few miles before and/or after the half.

When I run on the treadmill I have water commensurate to the length of my workout handy. Not really because I need it, but because it's one of the few times I like to drink water. Never worn anything for a race. Water/hydration stops are frequent enough at all of the races I've run that I've never felt I needed to carry any extra.

ATTQOTD: So far my hydration system is putting a water bottle on my porch and also going to the local park water fountains. Once winter hits I'll be on the treadmill a lot so it will change to putting the water in a cup holder. I may have to revise this strategy in the spring when I train for a half. Since up to this point the longest I've ever been out running is just over 1hr 15min.
For my longer runs I tend to have a few sports beans with water before I go out and some when I get back...so I'm not really a "carry things with me" person just yet.

My current hydration system consists of bottles of Tailwind and water left on the edge of the wall near the back entrance to the hotel. After each full up/down/over/back loop of the parking lot, I stop for a few quick sips of each. I will bring my Fuel Belt with its bottles full of Tailwind to the race with me and plan to use them, but who knows how I'll feel by then. I might decide to live on flat Coke for the rest of the night.

ATTQOTD: I have a 20oz Nathan handheld with a little pouch on it. I take it with me on all runs in the summer and longer runs at other times of the year, races included. It goes with me on anything about > 4 miles in non-summer (the way my running routes are, I very rarely run a ~5 mile distance... if it's not ~4 then it's ~6). It's really based on how long it takes me to run those routes, though... a 4 mile run is anywhere from 46-52 minutes for me, that's about my limit for no water in non-summer. In the summer though that will get refilled 1-2 times at Dunkin Donuts or convenience stores... I am a very heavy sweater and a very thirsty runner.

I use the pouch on the bottle for gel in the winter if I'm not wearing a SparkleSkirt, although it doesn't fit many in there very well. I can get like 3 in there if I really cram them (I use Huma gels and the packets are a lot larger than GU), but then there's no space for anything else, so if I'm not wearing SS, then I will also wear a SPIbelt to hold things at my waist. If I am wearing a SS, then everything goes into the pockets on that, and the pouch is just for my car key, an id/credit card/couple bucks in cash, and a small sandwich baggie to put my emptied gel packets so they don't get residual goop on stuff.

ATTQOTD: I can't stand anything in my hands, because I wind up clenching it which causes tension in my neck and shoulders. I also hated wearing a belt, because it would slip up and move around. Several years ago I discovered Fitletic water belts with their silicone dots that keep it from moving. I wear it on runs longer than 7 miles. I have no clue where I came up with that arbitrary number, but it seems to be the point where I feel parched if I don't have it now. I can also fit 4 gels on it which is nice.

I have also discovered that I can't handle large volumes of water at one time. The belt allows me to take sips every mile. When I'm running longer than 12-13 miles, I will either stop at neighbors' houses I know well to use their spigot to refill or swing by my house for a refill.

Ah, hydration. One of my main frustrations has been trying to find a hydration solution that works for me! Alas, most have not. Here’s what I’ve tried and discovered as part of aquaquest 2015-2016:

1. Nathan Triangle Waist Pack – Worked great when I was just walking, but not so well for running. Doesn’t bounce around too much, but getting the bottle in and out and making sure it was secured with the elastic loop (or it would fall out) was just not comfortable.

2. Nathan Trail Mix (2 bottles) – Worked pretty well for running, but the low capacity of the bottles combined with the belts tendency to shift and rotate around my waist drove me nuts. Plus the pocket in it is tiny! Had to add an extra pocket for my phone.

3. Camelbak Marathoner Vest – Very comfortable. Great capacity. Lots of storage space. Not well insulated, though. Doesn’t keep water cool for long, at all, as body heat warms the bladder. The biggest pain, though, is cleaning the bladder and tubing. Not easy at all. Revisiting this one right now.

4. Orange Mud Single Barrel Hydraquiver – Comfortable to wear with a lot of good storage space. Capacity is limited to the bottle sizes that will fit into the “quiver”. Surprisingly easy to get the bottle into and out of. The downside here is the volume limitation. Good choice for “tweener” runs that need hydration, but not Camelbak-volume hydration.

I typically don’t carry water with me for anything less than 7 miles. From 7-11 mile training runs, the Hydraquiver is my go to solution. Anything above 11 miles and the Hydraquiver just doesn’t have the volume I need and I don’t want to spend the money for the double barrel variety right now, so I’m back to the Camelbak. My last 14 miler went very well with the Camelbak.

I have never carried my own hydration during a race, relying exclusively on aid stations. After the success I’ve had on my longer training runs with the Camelbak, I’m considering using it during my upcoming marathon, as I’m a little concerned about getting enough fluid at the aid stations to fully support my fuel intake.

QOTD: Do you use a fuel belt / hydration system for your runs? Do you use them for every run, or just runs of "x" miles or "x" time? Do you also run your races with them?
I have a handheld that I use for shorter runs. For longer runs I have a single barrel HydraQuiver pack from Orange Mud that I really like. I used to use a Camelback but I like the Orange Mud and handheld options because I can re-fill the bottles on the run if I need to, and they are SO much easier to clean/maintain than the Camelbak bladder. I only use these for training runs, for races I normally find that the on-course stops are plenty for me.

I normally don't take the bottles with me for runs under 6 miles, unless it's super hot out.

ATTQOTD: My hydration system is DH on his bike with 2 bottle holders. He carries my water and Gatorade. Love that guy! I always have him carry water, but just add the Gatorade bottle for runs of about 8 miles or longer. I plan to just use the on course stops also and am training for that by only taking liquids at the same intervals as the stops, about every 1.5 miles or so. I do have a couple of the flat bottles that fit in my Sparkle Skirt pockets but I don't like the sloshing and the fact that they get warm so quickly since they are so small and close to my body.

ATTQOTD: I also have a handheld Nathan that I use for shorter runs. 6+ miles typically. I have a belt (can't remember the brand right now) that has two 8 oz bottles so for longer training runs - 10+ miles I'll use both with water in the belt bottles and electrolyte in the handheld.

I typically don't carry anything for races nowadays. I just use whatever hydration is available on the course and carry my fuel in my pockets.

ATTQOTD: No belts! They drive me batty. I carry a small (8-12oz - I have a few different ones) handheld and refill it as needed. I don't bother with it for short races, but carry it for halfs or longer, and for 10ks in hot weather. I keep extra tabs of Nuun in the pocket so I can drop them in when I refill with water, along with a lip balm. Because chapped lips can make 10 miles feel like 50. :)

@LSUlakes - Not sure how I messed the date up, but my race is on Sunday 10/9- Texas 10 Cypress. My goal has changed to a 1:20. Going to use it as a quick training run, and not race.

I am also doing the Capital to Coast relay race on Oct 14-15. 223 mile relay

ATTQOTD: I have a Nathan fuel belt that holds two bottles, and usually wear it for anything 10 miles and above. This summer has been brutal enough that I have used it for 8 milers as well. Has a nice pocket for my car key as well when driving to run a route. I also have a hand-held that I will carry for some runs during the week this year that are more than 7 miles.

I have worn the belt on the two marathons when the temp was around 70 at the start of the race.

ATTQOTD: No belts!

I imagined this phrase uttered like this:

NoCapes!.gif
