The Running Thread - 2016

I think this is good news. When I have a string of awful runs and I begin to feel defeated I go out one day and I have one of those runs where you are flying and it feels like you are barely trying. If you can get over the other stuff, like that it's not Disney, you're not travelling (meaning you get to eat normally and stuff as opposed to travelling) and you can still wear a tutu, then maybe you are due for one of those good runs. Remember, running is 90% mental. You need to tell yourself you are going to destroy this race and take no prisoners.

QOTD: My goal is to be running by October 2017 at this point. But, I will continue doing P90X workouts every other day. I hope to get 20 hours on the bike this month at minimum. It isn't strenuous work, as I am limited to Zone 2 effort at this point, but it works out perfectly. I just finished my HRT book. I am working on conditioning so when I can finally run my conditioning won't be an issue. Once I strengthen my muscles I will be ready to kick it all up a notch.

Thanks for this! I think "I'm going to destroy this race" is my new mantra! :thumbsup2

Posters from the East coast, are you close enough to the coast that you are taking preparing for this storm? Looks like USCe is closed for the remainder of the week and South Carolina has order a evacuation for 1.1MM folks. Any of yall in Florida along the east coast, at what point are you thinking of leaving? The latest model runs swung the cone back west this afternoon. Good luck to all that may have to deal with this storm, let me know if there is anything I can do to help.

I'm pretty far inland in Virginia but every now and then a storm tracks right over us.
More worried about both sets of our parents.....mine are in Hilton Head and ordered to evacuate
Mrs. Slogger's parents are in St. Augustine.

Be careful everyone.

ATTQOTD: My goals for October are to get in all my runs, follow my taper for the Grand Rapids Marathon and run a smart race leading to a PR. Outside this I am hoping to get in a few more long trail runs before winter sets in around here. Thank you to @Ariel484 for the reminder to be thankful and enjoy this opportunity to run. I am going to focus on that as well!

@CheapRunnerMike tear up that ultra! Have you run others? I think that I have a new addiction! I am planning on 4 ultras for 2017; 50K's and one 50 Miler.

I was looking squarely at you John! Mr @Baloo in MI as well as a few others too...50K has me rattled enough, I can't imagine 50/100 miles!

You'll be fine. You get to run slower than your marathon pace & usually on trails. Plus, it's only an hour or so longer than a marathon.

Which 50? Hopefully a moderate one and not something like half of Hardrock or Leadville.

@DopeyBadger - I hope that it is not a stress fracture, but you should consider treating it as such until you are sure that it is not. If you keep running on it because you can deal with the pain, you could make it much worse if it is, in fact, a stress fracture. You planned on taking a few weeks off anyway. Sending good thoughts your way.

Good luck to everyone with homes in the path of this storm.

I did a 50 (actually 52) miler back in April. Just break it down into smaller races; like 2 marathons with a really really short taper for the second one.

For a 50k, break it down into 5 10ks and 'reset' mentally after each one.

Good advice, thanks...it's a two-loop race around a lake, so will likely just break it in two.

Going to be my first time going beyond 26.2...I have fallen in love with trails the last couple of years so really looking forward to this one. Trail Runs have the best names too...this one is called 'Vulture Bait' :)

I'm not really concerned, I know I can do the distance and just need to make sure I manage the pace. I need to resist the urge to chase the 25K guys!

Thanks @BuckeyeBama! With the speed at which it is recovering I'm thinking less and less it is indeed a stress fracture and instead shin splints. Today I am able to walk my normal slow speed (I typically walk a 20-25 min/mile) with little to no change in gait and little to no pain. However, with that being said I agree with your outlook. It is best to continue to rest until the pain subsides regardless of the circumstances. Training through fatigue is ok, but training through pain can be a recipe for worse outcomes. I'm hopeful that the speedy recovery continues and I'll be back at it with a cautious approach in 1.5 weeks. Just going to keep icing, elevating, compressing, sleeping, and eating a healthy nutritious diet to give my body everything it needs to make a full recovery.

Congrats on the PR @DopeyBadger!

I'm a bit late commenting on my race but I was able to PR with 2:54:18. I'm both elated by this because it's 30+ minutes better than my previous PR (due in part to not being a rD race) but also slightly disappointed because I was on track to come in just below 2:45 but I bonked between mile 9 and 10. My splits prior to that point were in the 12:30-12:40 range but after that went up to 14:22, 14:54, 15:41, and 13:55 which threw off any hopes of coming sooner. I still think I did well overall but I'm not really sure why I bonked (food, sleep, going out too fast) but I'd like to prevent it in the future.

I never prepare for hurricanes much, since we're not on the coast. The last one to impact us in Richmond was Irene in 2011. I was pregnant and we lost power for 5 days in August. Fortunately we had friends with family that didn't lose power take us in.

This massive storm was tracking to be within 75 miles which means heavy TS winds. I must admit it sent me to the grocery store last night to get a jump on everyone else. I hate the idea of fighting the panicky crowds. I stocked up on the essentials ... you know ... chips, salsa, queso, Oreos, Pat O's hurricane mix etc. Nothing like a hurricane to give me the green light to gorge myself on junk food. Of course overnight the track changed, and we're not supposed to get any impact.

My MIL lives on FL East coast (Jensen Beach). They're putting the storm shutters on her condo today. She says she has enough food and water to last weeks (she's probably not exaggerating), so she'll be good.

Thanks! Congrats to you as well! Based on the order of your splits my guess would be you hit your lactate threshold around mile 9-10 and the perception of effort dramatically increased to a point that forced you to slow down. I'm guessing this based on the drop in pace and then last split suddenly getting faster because if it were carb/energy based you likely wouldn't be able to have a surge like that (from 15:41 to 13:55). Regardless, I think you did very well! Kudos!

Congrats to everyone on their awesome races over the weekend! Also, sending good and safe thoughts to everyone in the path of the hurricane!

Oct Goals:
1. Continue following my Higdon's 10K training plan
a. complete long runs outside
b. work on hydration
2. Sign up for Turkey Trot (and try to convince my family to do the same!)
3. Remember to ENJOY running and not worry about paces :-)

October goals:
My main goal was to get my mileage back up so I could hit 1000 miles for the year but I'm facing major life changes this month. Im going to have to adjust expectations and squeeze in runs where I can. Im getting divorced and even though it's a relief, it's still time consuming with moving and meetings, etc. Its amicable but there's still stress in telling people and sorting through 27 years of stuff.

Thanks! That was my concern. I've maintained a similar pace for a 10 miler in the past without trouble which is why I was hoping it was something that was easier to track but it makes sense. I guess that means more intervals for me!

Congrats on a great race @Anisum!
Thank you!
QOTD: What are your running goals for the month of October?
1. Get 50 miles in. This is not an easy task short races on the weekend and friend's weddings I'm not going to have much time to get long runs in. I hate being sub-50 in this gorgeous October weather though so we'll see how that works out.
2. Cross train! I start swimming again as part of the tri-club a joined. Of course it's indoor but it gets me back in shape.
3. Stay Healthy and Injury Free

Disney question for y'all:

My family of 5 is currently booked at POR for spring break. I got a pin code yesterday that would allow us to stay in a deluxe studio room at BW Villas for about $800 more. I'm very tempted to switch for the proximity to Epcot & HS. Do you think the extra cost is worth it for the location? We would also be gaining a toaster & microwave. I can't decide, help me think this through!

I'm a total resort snob, so I'm over here all YES YES DO IT!

I wasn't aware that the studios could sleep 5 though? There's a queen bed and a queen sleeper sofa. Definitely check into that before making any changes!
