Does anyone keep a running journal?

I log miles on a spreadsheet, but also when I started my training cycle for my December marathon I started keeping notes on each training run (what I ate, weather, etc). But, after about 2 weeks I got lazy and stopped doing it. About 2 months ago, I went back and looked at those notes and was pleasantly surprised how good the info was. So, I've actually gotten back into it and find it really valuable. I'm generally logging tiny stuff, like little mental games that may have helped during a run, or I'm seeing a slight correlation in my paces related to certain temps/humidity. And, here's the bonus...because I hand write it all I've seen quite an improvement in my penmanship.

What does it look like, what do you document? As I get more into running, I thought it might be nice to have something to look back on!

Also, does anyone have an alternative to the map my run app? I loved being able to find "courses" around my house....but now they want to charge me for that :(
Forgot to mention my favourite site for building routes...used to be called Gmap Pedometer but they rebranded as Milermeter. Really great site for building your own running and cycling routes.

On a side note, I passed a guy running in pleated khaki shorts and a regular cotton tshirt yesterday. It was 5 pm, and around 90 outside. He looked like he was a seasoned runner, so I was baffled.
Do you live somewhere, where he could have been travelling? I've had trips where I've forgotten some of my running clothes and just had to make do with other stuff I brought. (for example I ran around hilton head wearing a typical running outfit, but with dress socks instead of running socks?

I love that. I use it to plan a lot of my point to point and circular long runs.

I did this exact thing a few months ago when traveling to NY. I almost went without socks, but decided to use dress socks and fold them down.

Nope. I was in an extremely suburban area going through a subdivision. He was definitely a resident.

During the Monument Ave 10k a guy lined up in my corral (which was a seeded corral) wearing khaki cargo shorts, a cotton tshirt and no shoes or socks. His hair was a mess. It looked like he forgot the race was that morning and literally rolled out of bed. Especially since this race had a brief snowstorm. Most everyone was in tights and log sleeves.

No journal here. I use Runkeeper to log my runs (I use iSmoothRun as my app during a run, then sync it to Runkeeper), and it keeps a log of time, pace, distance, weather, whatever notes I add, shoes, etc.

2 miler last night went well. We ended up with good cloud cover and since the race starts at seven it has started to cool down some.
Mile 1 = 6:36
Mile 2 = 6:58
Mile .03 = 9.3 seconds...
Finish time of 13:44
I ended up with a 2 second PR and 2nd place in my age group. (There may have only been two people in my age group though...)

Garmin connect site and a excel sheet with past run info as well as training plans.

I keep all of my workouts in Training Peaks. They also end up in Garmin Connect and Strava automagically, but I don't use those two much. Once a week, I also enter them into Daily Mile so I can track my shoe mileage. I know I could do this in TP as well, but since I've been using DM for longer than TP, it's now a habit. All of this isn't really a journal, though, more of a history of my training and my comments after each workout for my coach. I do post race reports to a blog after all of my races and once in a while I even add a discussion about my training. I really should do this on a daily basis but I'm lazy.

I keep all my workouts in Strava. I don't very often write a description of it though, just the Garmin data, the type of run it was if it wasn't just a regular run (race or long run), and which shoes I wore. They're also in Garmin Connect, of course, and RunKeeper, but I've always found Garmin Connect to be difficult to use and I like the features on Strava better anyway. RunKeeper, I stopped using that when I switched to Strava last year, mainly because it didn't auto-sync with my Garmin and I was super tired of manually uploading after every run, although they of course added it not very long after I switched. :) I liked Strava better though so I stuck with it. I did connect up RunKeeper with the Garmin so I could earn New Balance points... but those are on Strava now. :D

What's your blog John? I love reading race recaps...

QOTD: Do you drink energy drink (Not tea or coffee)?

ATTQOTD: Let me answer that by saying this... Hi. My name is LSUlakes and I drink a LOT of red bull.
I know the stuff is bad for me, really bad. At the moment I am drink at least 2-3 of them a day. I point this out as a area that a minor change could help me drop a few pounds as well as living a healthier life style. I keep telling myself, ok this is the last day, but I keep coming back to it. Well I think its finally time to drop that one and actually make the change. Since I said it here, now it's real.

QOTD: Do you drink energy drink (Not tea or coffee)?

I don't drink energy drinks. I do drink a lot of diet soda, though, around 5-6 cans per day. That's pretty evenly split across caffeinated during the day and caffeine free after 6:00 or so (otherwise there'll be no sleeping at night). For hydration and electrolyte replacement, I like Propel since it has no calories.

I don't drink energy drinks but I have the same problem with sweets. I always say tomorrow I won't eat any but I always do, I know my running could be so much better if I cut it out of my diet but it's like an addiction!!

I drink too much Diet Mountain Dew and don't know how people would classify that but haven't had anything solely advertised as an energy drink in a few years. I think I have consumed less than 10 energy drinks in my life and they were all sugar free Red Bull when driving late at night. I'm pretty sure the terrible taste helped me stay awake more than whatever is in them.

ATTQOTD: I will have a Red Bull before a long run and the thing I like about it is how mentally sharp they make me feel. I obviously get the energy boost, but the mental aspect is nice as well.

@LSUlakes - That's a lot of Red Bull, once you quit you'll probably have enough money for another DW trip!
