The Running Thread - 2016

So... After much thought and discussion, DD26 and I will not be doing our first marathon on Labor Day. :( We are dropping back to the half. She and her fiancé just broke up and she had to move out on her own. Which meant taking a second job, so she is currently working 8:00am to 11:00pm 4 days a week, 8:00 to 4:00 one day, 4:30-11:00 one day, and has one day off. She just can't find time to get the training runs in. Plus she now lives 30 minutes from her jobs so factor in drive time and her days are pretty much shot. I personally am having trouble running in this horrible heat and humidity. The heat index has been 110-120 and even when I start before sunrise, it is ridiculously hot/humid before I am done. I can only imagine how horrible it would be in July/August when I got to the 16-20 mile runs.

So... I am going to do my first marathon at the WDW Marathon. I'm starting the Higdon Novice 2 half marathon plan this week. Then there are 18 weeks from the Labor Day half until the WDW Marathon so I can finish the 18 week Higdon Novice 1 marathon plan right on time to run the marathon. I know no one probably cares, lol, but it doesn't feel real until I post it here. :)
Aw, sorry to hear that...but just remember that there is no better marathon to be your first than Disney!

I care!! :)

First marathon at wdw is on my bucket list so I'm excited for you. Your friend sounds like a trooper!

I gave it up for TWO years back in 2012/2013! Now I get one on Fridays at lunch. My diet coke cheat day. Guess what I have right now :). And fountain over can is preferred. Bottle is last resort. (But a coffee every morning!)
YES! Always fountain...we live for McDonald's dollar drink days :)

First I am sorry things do work out for DD26 and the fiancé. Regardless of what happened, having to discuss it with friends and family would be difficult. I would imagine training for a full during the summer would almost certainly require at least parts of the long run on a treadmill. We are also getting heat index temps up to 110 and the early morning runs feel like a swim. 18 weeks after your half is perfect leading up to a marathon. In theory, you will have a solid base leading up to you full marathon plan and would have hit a few double digit long runs as well. It doesn't sound like much, but it helps with confidence when you have 15-20 milers coming up. As for the last part, I think I can speak for everyone here, when I say we do care about your running. I would also like to add, that Disney is probably the best marathon one could choose for their first.

Send your daughter my best. That would be extremely tough to train under all of those circumstances (life, weather, timing). And we most definitely care. We will cheer you on vigorously for the half in September and will help you celebrate your first marathon in Disney World.

I am going to go "look" at the 235 during lunch today. I will still send the 620 out for repair/replacement and will probably hold on to it as a back-up or maybe sell it. I still have my first GPS watch which is the Forerunner 410. I don't think anyone would take it, if I tried to give it away for free. DW keeps claiming she wants to use it for when she goes outside to walk.....

If you buy the 920 from the UK, it's barely over $300.

I know what you mean, but I don't understand why you would want to quit Diet Coke??? Confession time -- sometimes I would rather have a Diet Coke than a beer :ssst:

Blasphemy!!

Blasphemy!!

So true.

That said, I gave up all soda (other than sugar-free Red Bull) about four years ago, but sometimes - on VERY rare occasions - I'll have a sip of fountain Diet Coke and I can feel the happiness just immediately course through my veins. The last time, I literally got goosebumps because it just tasted SO. GOOD.

ATTQOTD:

Without the environment of the race and seeing other runners it was just like any other training run.

This exactly. But I also echo everyone else who said if that's what floats your running boat, then go for it!

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend! I'm going off the grid for the weekend, heading up to the cabin in Northern Michigan with the family for some R&R. Looking forward to running up there where I might see some elk, fox, loons, and bald eagles. :sunny:

Enjoy your weekend away!

I care. I am sorry to hear about your daughter. I think she is making the right decision. In order to be successful at your first marathon you need to all in to get the training done. But I think your plan to be ready for the WDW marathon is a good one.

I wish everyone that has a race this weekend luck. Have a great time!

QOTD: I personally don't like virtual runs. For me the races are the best part. I love the energy and excitement of the races. You can't get that from a virtual run. I understand it gets some people off the couch and that's awesome. But I don't want a collection of medals. I want a collection of experiences. I love the medals I have, they each have a story, but it's the races that do it for me.

ATTQOTD: Not into virtual runs at all. I did briefly consider the Disney ones because I was doing a bunch of real races that have no bling during the time frame, but then I saw the price tag, so I skipped it. :)

I was definitely addicted to soda (regular Pepsi girl myself). I drank at least 3 cans a day. I'd scan ads for sales (buy 2 packs, get 3 free) and stock up buying 10 cases. I can't for the life of me remember why I stopped cold turkey. I think it's when I got pregnant. It's the carbonation that I was addicted to - so a sodastream works great (just water). However, I do get soda (root beer!) when we go out ... either root beer or alcohol. Natch!

ATTQOTD: Initially didn't see the point of virtual runs and thought they were cash grabs, but I can see how it's nice just to get someone motivated especially if intimidated by large crowds at a race or if it's for charity or for a community.

Good luck to all those racing this weekend and happy early Father's Day!

I ran my first 5K since February's Princess Half Marathon this morning! Just a local 5K, but it was a lot of fun! My goal was to get under 10:00 minutes/mile (my training runs have been around 11:00 or 11:30 minutes/mile so this was a push for me!). My official time was 29:32 which made me really happy. As you can see the first mile was downhill, so I was able to cruise pretty fast (fast for me anyway!). The last two miles were uphill, so I was trying to just stay under my 10:00 goal pace. I felt like I did my best which is always the feeling I want to have after a race. Oh, and bonus with this being a very small race I got first in my age group! :) Anyway, I hope you all have a wonderful running weekend!

Super excited! Good luck to the rest of you racing this weekend. May you all have the races you hope to. This will be my 1st non-Dopey challenge 10K, so I'm excited to see what I can do in a small (50-100 people) local race. My goals:

1) Top 5
2) Top 3 Age Group (30-39) so I can get a bubble head fireman trophy for my daughter
3) Finish my 10K faster than my mother and BIL (if he runs) finish their 5K. The 10K has a head start of 15 min. My mother is going for a 28 min 5K, and BIL for a 26 min 5K. This means I need to finish in 41-43 minutes to beat either of them. It will be a fun spin on the run if I can see them up ahead and just that extra piece of motivation to catch them.

As of right now, I feel in good condition to hit a solid time and the weather looks agreeable (66-70 with a dew point of 56).

Finished my first non-challenge 10k this morning. The short version is I finished 7th place overall, 4th place in my age group, 50 seconds slower than my mom, but with a new PR by 4 seconds. It was a really fun race with a SPRINT to the finish! Check out my longer race cap here in my journal: Hot2Trot 10K
