Happy Father's Day to everyone! It's the best title I will ever have!!

Looking forward to spending time with family today and my wife promised to make one of my favorite treats banana pudding. Is that TMI?!!

What is everybody else doing for Father's Day?

Just got back from picking up two pairs of Glycerin 13s at the local running store for $70 each! Major score! My 12s are approaching 250 miles apiece right now.

Watching France-Switzerland right now. Going to play a leisurely round of disc golf after it's over.

Filets on the grill with blue cheese/bacon/onion topping, cheenies and corn on the cob for dinner. Chocolate chip pound cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Nothing to eat for the rest of the week! My wife has gotten so good at filets on the grill at home most restaurant steaks are disappointing now.

Having both girls out of the house now makes for a pretty low key Father's Day. Hope everyone else has a good day as well!

I ran a 5k with Bella (my younger daughter) Friday. Great race! It was well organized and part of a festival happening in town. It is so rewarding to run with her. She puts all her energy into it, really gives her all. She did great! I have her set the pace, I encourage along the way and just try to take in the moment.

She got a PR by about 20 seconds, got her finishers medal and wore it all night. I think she is hooked. She wants to run a 10k now! So proud of her.

Happy Father's Day to all the fathers out there.

Woohoo! That is exciting! My best friend's little one is 4. She is signing her up for one of those kid's races in town and she's so excited to run just like mommy.

My sentiments exactly. Goals are something nice to strive for (and I do like my goals), but in the end if I did the best I could do that day then that's all I can ask of myself.

Couldn't have said it better!

My take - If you are handling Novice 1 well, you should put Novice 2 on your calendar so you know exactly when to start that program. Finish Novice 1 and then just run your base mileage between the two programs. Now comes the tricky part - if Novice 2 starts with weekly mileage lower than your base mileage, do not lower your mileage to meet the plan. Maintain your mileage running the types of training run called for in the plan until the plan catches up, then increase mileage with the plan.

Most Novice plans start with really low mileage, and you don't want to give up your gains by lowering your weekly mileage that much. One possible exception - do not continue to run 16-18 mile long runs. Drop that down to about 10-13 miles.

OK....so maybe keep 5 miles on the two short runs and then drop down to 6-8 on the long run and gradually increase back to 13? Or is it better to always keep the 13 mies on the long runs until I'm close to the half? I probably should have just started it closer to the date, then I wouldn't have to start a new plan.

My kids call those machines "soda jukeboxes" but they are my kryptonite. Cherry and vanilla coke mix is my go-to combo.
I am a reformed soda-junkie. Used to have a can of coke and a snickers bar for breakfast every day, soda for lunch, ginger ale at night. Then I got married and my wife put a stop to it (thank goodness).

Now I fight the urge and try to have at least 3 soda free days a week. Sometimes I can do 4 or 5. I don't drink coffee and definitely have issues after going cold turkey a few days in a row. On soda days I am trying to limit it to 12 or 16oz at the most but it takes discipline.

That sounds like a good compromise. I had too lower my soda intake as well. I only drink it when out to eat or the movies. I don't keep it in the house anymore; that way I drink less.

Depends on your base, age, running experience, etc. My shortest long run between now and January (assuming no injuries) will be 10 miles. I am running the Dopey and my base is currently 35 miles/week, building to 45 miles/week before I start my training plan. When I start my training plan my long run will be 16 miles, but I will drop it back to 13 miles. Really long runs and speed work are the most likely cause of injury, and above all else I need to make it to the starting line injury-free this season.

Missing a run here or there definitely won't make a huge difference. Missing a lot of runs will. No, you don't sound like a head case. You sound like a runner, which depending on who you ask, could be the same thing. You're among friends here. We are your people.

Awww.

With all the talk of Diet Coke I had to stop and get one at Wendy's today, lol. I've actually cut way back on soda in the last six months or so, so this was a special treat. No way, no how will I give up my morning coffee though!

I have been tracking my calories again. I started this week. Since I have about 5 weeks left of exercise I need to really focus on diet if I want to still get to my goal. But, I gave myself a little treat today on father's day.

It's a tiny dish of orange dole whip. I have been missing Disney so I thought it would get one. I have to say, I don't get why people love this stuff so much. It doesn't do much for me.

As for the soda talk. I used to LOVE Mug Root Beer. When I started running and eating healthy I gave up soda. I have had maybe a total of 2 liters of soda in the past 2 years. All I drink is water.

What type of headphones do you guys use to run in?

Any wireless headphone recommendations? I feel like I'm always getting caught up in the cords of my headphones, or they are falling out!

At the same time, I'm not looking to spend hundreds on headphones (and I do understand that you definitely get what you pay for with headphones)

Me either. :o

I remember back the first time I went to Disney in the 80's and we saw people eating this stuff, and I thought it was ice cream. My mom and I ordered some and dug into it and we were so disappointed... like, this isn't ice cream?! :) I've never forgotten that disappointment and never ordered it again.

I use Backbeat Fit by Plantronics:

Sound is excellent. Battery life is great. I find them to be comfortable and you can even take calls from them while you are running if you need to. I have actually had people not know I was talking through my headphones when I had to use them.

I would much rather a thermos of strawberry soup!!!! Have you had that?

I run in Jaybird BlueBuds X. I think I might need to RMA them. They have a sweat guarantee, and I don't know if it's sweat or not, but they've been really static-y lately and cut out every few seconds.

I have never heard of that... it sounds gross though. :)

I know BlueBuds X and the Backbeat style are very popular. I have always run into problems with the cord that loops around the back of the head, though. It seemed like any time I turned my head, the cord would catch and yank them out of my ears.

My best solution until recently was the LG Tone series of headphones. Bluetooth with great sound and the collar holding the electronics allowed the earbuds to be very light and unobtrusive. A lot of folks dislike the collar, though. I never found it to be an issue personally. If you end up going with an earbud, I strongly recommend Comply memory foam tips for increased security and comfort.

I don't particularly like things in my ears, though, for both comfort and safety purposes, so I was constantly on the lookout for something new. My current favorite by a long shot are AfterShokz Trekz Titanium bone conductive Bluetooth headphones. They sit just forward of your ears and send sound waves to the inner ear bones through vibrations delivered to the cheek bones. Nothing in your ears plugging them up. It's safer and I find my ears stay cooler, as well. It's not audiophile quality sound, but none of the options are. The downside for these is the price. They run $130 or so and are hard to find on sale.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

For the BlueBuds, there's a little widget that you can use to adjust the cord so that it fits up snugly against your neck so that won't happen. Personally, I have never taken the time to set it up. I loop the cord over the top of my ponytail. :) YMMV if you have short hair, though. ;)

I don't have wireless headphones, but Yurbuds are the only things that stay in my ears! I think they make wireless, but I've never tried them.

So I had trouble with headphones falling out of my ears all the time and got these (relatively) cheap headphones and they've never fallen out unless I've accidentally caught my arm/hand in the cords and pulled them out.

I found the trick to non-wireless headphones is to actually have the wire run under your shirt so they don't get caught while swinging your arms etc.

I have no experience with wireless headphones but have heard of previous posters brands and also heard anker (they sell through amazon) makes good ones.

Also, for anyone who likes Brooks shoes, www.jackrabbit.com is selling glycerin 13s for $70 and ghost 8s for $55. (as well as Asics Nimbus 17s for $75, but very limited selection). I believe Brooks recently came out with new versions of those shoes.

Yes! The new soda machines that allow different flavors are great. But I always get the same thing, lime Diet Coke.
I always get Barqs Root Beer. I rarely drink soda so whenever I do it's got to be root beer!

Not TMI at all! I'm very jealous of your banana pudding. As for me, I spent father's day on the couch catching up on grad school work. Saturday though I went out to a winery with my dad and we did a tasting and had a little lunch platter they serve there with the most amazing hummus and finished it off with a wine slushie they serve there.

I use a tiny MP3 player for music because I hate using Bluetooth on my phone (that's a rant for another time) and sadly the tiny thing is not Bluetooth compatible so I use Zipbuds. I tied up the extra cord into a little knot so it's not too long since I wear my mp3 player on my shirt, then I wrap the single zipper cord around the back of my neck to the opposite side, stick one headphone under my sports bra strap and the other in my ear. I find the system works well for me.

OMG the site was a pain to work with but I got a pair and am now contemplating another (not that I need them) because Glycerins are soooooo expensive and I will eventually need a pair. Thanks so much for posting this! And for once my massive feet came in handy because my size was one of the few in stock for two of the colors!

So I just found Nerd Herd because of you and will be running the doctor who and harry potter races this year. Yesss. I'm so excited. Thanks :)

And I also just signed up for the Orlando one. To me, as long as they represent a charity or something, I think I'll enjoy it. I wouldn't just run for a medal though, I don't think.
A Doctor Who race? Now you've got me excited! Will have to check that one out...

I usually run with an iPod shuffle, so no Bluetooth...I use Yurbuds with it and they are pretty good. I also have a pair of swimming headphones that have the mp3 player built into the earbud itself...I have run with them before as well and it works pretty good. They are Sony Walkman of all things (I know, 1988 all over again, right?)
