The Running Thread - 2016

ATTQOTD: I subscribe to Runners World. Last book I bought was either "Marathon" by Hal Higdon or "The Athletes Book of Home Remedies" I got them close together and don't remember which was first. Favorite running related book that I have read, "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. It is the story of Olympic runner and WWII POW Louis Zamperini.

The last books I bought that were running related were last year when I was ready to make a change:

Hansons Marathon Method - Luke Humphrey (favorite book)
Advanced Marathoning - Pete Pfitzinger (good resource)
Daniel's Running Forumla - Jack Daniels (very informative)
Science of Running - Steve Magness (extremely dense and difficult to read at some times)
Racing Weight Cookbook - Matt Fitzgerald (amazing recipes)
Performance Nutrition for Runners - Matt Fitzgerald (meh, didn't really learn anything)

ATTQOTD: mentioned it before but Matt Fitzgerald's book How Bad Do You Want It - Mastering the Psychology of Mind over Matter. Great book that mixes science with stories of athletes.

@CheapRunnerMike if haven't read it already, a good tri book is Iron War also by Matt Fitzgerald. It's about Dave Scott and Mark Allen and the beginning of Ironman and Kona.

Forgot about Unbroken ... remarkable man and amazing story.

I also loved the Eco Challenge shows! The last season or two were kind of dumbed down, but the beginning ones were amazing. We were all ready to go out and do an expedition race after watching them. :)

ATTQOTD: I think the last book I purchased was probably Born to Run.

Edit: Nope, after checking Amazon history, it was The Terrible and Wonderful Reasons Why I Run Long Distances because I LOVE The Oatmeal, but I haven't read it yet because I do most of my reading on my Kindle and I think that's illustrated, so I need to use my iPad.

I have the two books highlighted above as well. The cookbook one has some really good stuff in it.

Thanks Cliff, I've heard good things about this one and know the story of that race very well...I'm putting it on my Amazon wish list right now!

ATTQOTD We have a Runner's World subscription, but I rarely read it. Honestly, I really hate most non-fiction. I'm an avid reader, but it's usually fiction. My employee bought me The Terrible and Wonderful Readons Why I Run Long Distances. It was amusing.

ATTQOTDs

1. I have an 8-year-old Lab who is super-mellow in the house, but get him outside and he loses his dang mind. So I can't run with him without hurting myself (he weighs 100 pounds).
2. Nope, no change in my plans. My plan is to live and enjoy life.
3. I'm more of a fiction gal, myself, but I did read The Oatmeal's book on running and it's hysterical.

I'm not a huge fan of reading running books either, rather a good novel...Carl Hiaasen/Tim Dorsey-type Florida madcap, or Lee Child/Brad Thor always works for me.
Hiaasen's house is along one of my running routes and I saw him one morning picking up his newspaper! :) Huge fan of his and if you ever get a chance to go to a book signing, he is incredibly funny and gracious.

I subscribe to Runners World but I've never read any running related books. I'm more of a fiction reader. I did read Unbroken - amazing story!

QOTD: What was the last book (or magazine if no books) you purchased that is running related?

Hansons Marathon Method: Run Your Fastest Marathon the Hansons Way. Bought this last month after I signed up for Chicago 2016 (my second marathon). I wanted to have a little more serious plan this go around. After reading other runner's experiences with Hansons (especially DopeyBadger's journal), this seemed like a plan that suited me. So far I really like the variety... although I know other plans have variety too. In the past, I just ran 4 days per week. 3 weekday 6-mile runs at "whatever" pace and 1 weekend long run at "whatever" pace.

A Few Degrees from Hell: White Hot Tales from the Badwater Ultramarathon. I read this just to get a sense of how far some runners will push themselves. It's an easy read that essentially has short journals from ~20 or so of the participants in the 2003 Badwater Ultra-marathon. This July race begins in Death Valley and goes for 135 miles up to Mount Whitney. In this particular year, temperatures reached 130+ degrees. Reading through the runner and crew experiences is very interesting.

@DopeyBadger this is why you are such a great source on the thread! I am really impressed with your commitment!

QOTD: What was the last book (or magazine if no books) you purchased that is running related?

ATTQOTD: Over the weekend I got "The Little Red Book of Running". I am only a few pages in so far, but I do like the information in it thus far.

Last running book was Ultramarathon Man by Dean Karnazes. Read it in two days, really enjoyed it.

Amazing! He is one of the few authors out there that has me actually laughing out loud while reading his books...I will read anthing that guy writes!

@cburnett11 I used Hansons back in late 2014 while training for the 2015 Disney marathon...I got my BQ in that race and everyting the plan claimed was true for me. When everyone was hitting the wall at 20 miles I was just finding my stride...I negative split the marathon and finished with a sub-20 minute 5K. My legs didn't really start to even feel fatigued until 25 miles. If you follow the plan you will see results, but be warned that it is a BIG commitment.

ATTQOTD: Runner's World. I also bought Hanson's Half Marathon Method but haven't gotten thru it yet. I know it is a good plan but I honestly can't make myself be that dedicated. I did switch from the JG marathon plan to the Higdon marathon plan which has me running 4 days a week instead of 3, with increased miles during the week. I really have no idea how I could fit in more running days.

Not running related, but can I ask a question of current and past beagle owners? What kind of fence did you have to have to contain your dogs? My beagle (Hunter) is a monkey and escaped again today! He is not supposed to be out without supervision but DH apparently let him into the back yard with our other dog and didn't watch him. We have a 4' wire fence that we put up when we just had my Chihuahua. We live out in the country on 7 acres and while he always comes back, he is wet, muddy and covered in ticks when he does. Plus I am afraid he will get hit. Our other rescue dog jumps the fence but he doesn't run off. Has anyone else had this problem and remedied it??? :dog2:

ATTQOTD: When I finished my last ASICS plan I bought "Runners World: Run Less, Run Faster" as it was recommended by other interval runners. I only got a few chapters in when I realized I should have bought it in hard copy instead of for my Kindle. the tables and charts are very hard to navigate and refer on the Kindle. Ah well ... I'll go back to it eventually.
