The Running Thread - 2016

I will throw in some running stuff too. Last trip we used one of those bags you get at races, "swag bag". Thought it was a great idea, but after 1.5 days it started to rip. Then things started falling out. I used safety pins to hold it together, for a while and by then end of the day I had to ask for a plastic bag at one of the gift shops to hold our stuff. So we are making a return trip this fall and wanted some tips on bags you carry around the park. I don't like to leave to much stuff with the stroller, but it does serve a purpose. I have looked at some book bag types and found one I like.

Not the answer you are looking for, but last trip I decided to calculate in my mind how much I would pay to not have to carry a backpack. Like how much would that be worth to me. And then I thought of all the things I "may or might" need but not sure if I would or not. And then I decided if those things could fit under the "how much would I pay" box then I just wouldn't even bring them and just buy them expensively in the park or nearby. Like water or snacks etc. My trip was a short one though and I only have one kid so your mileage definitely will vary. And we only used cell phones for pictures. We ended up going with a small disneystore sofia duffle bag shoved under the stroller with some pullups and change of clothes and sunscreen for her. Nothing of value. Literally every snack or drink we just got in the park or at our hotel's market. She may have had one sippy cup for water in the bag. We did go back to the room a lot though so we aren't probably typical full day go-ers. Just something to think about.

I use a North Face Recon backpack as both a carry around the parks bag and as an airline carry-on. The straps are super comfortable and I've carried that thing all over Disney, Iceland and Europe and absolutely love it. It's got a big open top expandable mesh pocket on the back that's perfect for stashing things on the fly or that you need easy access to and the small zippered pocket right over it is perfect for sunglasses. It's also got a mesh drink holder on either side. The main pocket is pretty spacious, with a padded sleeve for a laptop/iPad/hydration bag and the secondary main pocket has a multitude of varying size compartments that I use for everything from my passport to pens to travel docs to portable electronics battery packs. Here's the North Face website for it. Mine is an older model, so it looks a bit different. Not sure if there are any major functionality changes, though.

I use this one and it works well (seems very similar to the Patagonia one, but a little smaller)...

I use an Alabama drawstring backpack, but we travel light in the parks. It is often almost empty. My airline backpack is Swiss Gear and made for my laptop.

QOTD: What is your next goal race?

ATTQOTD: Not sure which race, but 4th of July weekend I will run a 5k and hope to come close to PR despite warmer temps.

Goal race is Carowinds Race and Ride on September 11. Goal 1 is to PR (beat 2:21). Goal 2 is to attempt to replace Wine and Dine with a race around a theme park. My current training plan is going to help me with the first goal. Nothing can help me with the second one :(

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

ATTQOTD: Dave McGillivray (Race Director of the Boston Marathon). Because I would love to hear stories about what it takes to get everything together for so a major race and I am sure he has some very interesting stories. Not the most exciting answer I know...

Looking forward to reading everyone's response to this one!

Famous? Will Ferrell, because I would look over at him and then I'd laugh.

Reality? I'd like for my daughters to run with me. There's so much silence AND talking that go on during a run that you get this unique bond with your running buddies. I'm hoping that they will eventually join me on their own as they get older.

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

I would love to be able to run a race with my mom. She has a rare muscle disease which makes things like running and/or going up stairs really challenging for her.

I look forward to hopefully running races with my kids one day too. We have a feeling my oldest is going to be a runner!

QOTD: If you could go out for a run (distance not important here) with anyone dead or alive who would it be and why?

For a long time my two favorite athletes were Lance Armstrong and Michael Schumacher. I would love to go on a run with either for two different reasons. Michael would be number one because it means he has recovered from his devastating head injury. There was a time when a lot of people considered him one of the fittest athletes on the planet even if you don't generally thing of automobile racing as a "sport". The fitness needed to drive an F1 car, especially in the V10 era, was considerable. Lance would be a close second because I have passed my disappointment with what he did and moved on to acceptance. He is a phenomenal athlete and had he and everyone in the sport been clean I think he would have been just as dominating. I read an article last year in Trail Runner about a run he did in the Grand Canyon and I think the conversation would be good.

I avoid bags in the parks so I can't answer you from that perspective but I know quite a few hikers who swear by Patagonia. I know their lightweight jackets are among the best and they don't cut corners on quality. It would be a good backpack in general so I can't see it not being good for what you are looking for.

This week we have the following folks with races:

09 - @SueInBoston - JP Morgan Corporate Challenge 5k (NG / N/A)
10 - @opusone - La Grange Rocks 5k (22:00 / N/A)
11 - @Chaitali - Lawyers Have Heart 10k (Sub 01:20:00 / N/A)
11 - @Baloo in MI - Kona Run 10 Miler (NG / N/A)
11 - @*DisneyDreamer - Rock 'n Sole Half Marathon (NG / NA)
11 - @Miranda - Market Square Day 10K (1:15:00 / N/A)
11 - @Krynn - Shawshank Hustle 7k (NG / N/A)
11 - @Diskidatheart - Daily American 10k (48:00 / N/A)
11 - @CheapRunnerMike - Woodstock Sprint Triathlon (1:10:00 / N/A)
11 - @michigandergirl - Brian Diemer 5K (28:00 / N/A)
12 - @Nole95 - Hotlanta Half Marathon (N/A / N/A)

Good luck to you all! If you would like to revise your goal or will not be able to make the race this weekend, please let me know so I can update. Again, best of luck and enjoy the race!

Good luck to everyone racing!

Ironman Mont Tremblant in August...2.4 mile swim/112 mile bike/26.2 mile run. What have I gotten myself into???

Probably one of the best experiences of your life.

QOTD: I was just thinking of this very question last night. I almost sent a message to suggest it myself. I also wanted to do the "you could have any 5 people to dinner dead or alive" question too. Not running related but still cool. Anyway, for me it would be Walt. There were no rules about the person having to be a runner so he would be an easy choice. I would love to run through WDW or DL with him for a few hours just to get his feelings about the parks, how the company runs now, and life in general. If I had to pick a running person it would be Meb. Although he could probably run on his knees and still be faster than me. But everything I have heard about his is that he is a really nice guy.

I finally got the results of my MRI. Apparently the doctor usually has the patient call for results but he told me he would call me, so he was waiting for me to call and I was waiting for him to call. Well, it turns out I have a moderate tear on my peroneal tendon. He initially left me a voicemail after I had spoken to his assistant asking for the results. His quote was, "Your ankle is pretty beat up". I called him back and we talked for a few. I have an appointment on Monday to go over the results in detail and come up with a plan but he basically told me it has to be fixed with surgery. I may try to talk him into letting me run my upcoming races, as my two kids are looking forward to the 7/3 race. Either way, I am done running til Monday at least. I will stick to my bike for now.

Needless to say I am a little bummed. I may miss all my races this year. This makes my 210 lb goal seem so far away. I am questioning ever running a full marathon again. I would do Dopey and try to do Boston but others might be out. I didn't injure myself at all, as in twist an ankle or something. I did this while running the WDW marathon this year and I took it easy for that race, how did this happen? The doctor says the tendon just wore down. He made it sound like it will happen again so pushing myself hard marathon after marathon may not be the best idea.

I have been grouchy since finding out and trying to figure out how to get my exercise in. I was thinking swimming but that requires working the foot and ankle too. I am concerned if I go a long period of time without exercising that I will fall back into my hold habits.

That's all I have for now because otherwise I will just be rambling as I try to figure this out!!!

My heart goes out to you. You are too determined of a person to let this setback set you back. So I wish you the best in finding that new perfect fit for you.

This is a tough and interesting question. It's kind of hard to think of someone who runs that I would want to run with. My first thought would be Walt but he wasn't a runner he did water polo or something I think. Now being a Wisconsin guy and a huge Packer fan I'm going to say Brett Favre since he now does triathlons.

That is cool! I did not know that. I like Brett Farve even more now than I did before.

QOTD - Next race goal:
I am working towards my fall ultra, before then I have three races. To keep it simple I am planning to run each of those hard, race pace and see what I can do. My first real goal will be the ultra, I am not going to put a time down as this is my first attempt at anything longer than a marathon. But my goal is to be prepared and have a good race, finish on my terms.

QOTD - Someone to run with:
I would like to run with Billy Mills. As a kid I really looked up to him, he was a great role model in the Native American Community. He achieved what few can do, an Olympic Gold Medal. He is a true example of an underdog achieving. The movie Running Brave depicts his story. Pretty old movie, I have watched it more times than I would like to admit.

I vote for Crocs. You can even get Disney ones. I know they aren't in fashion anymore but they are comfy and I find them to be cool.

That is the second vote for Crocs! I may try them again. I tried years ago and didn't find them comfortable, but that was before my feet were so weird.

What about ballet flats? I have bad feet and I love my Tieks!

http://tieks.com/?gclid=CJKcuoeblc0CFdgMgQodH0MEzQ

Way too flat and way too closed in for me. I'm glad you have something that works for you though!

Congrats on your first post-Princess 5k.

For shoes I'm a fan of Danskos and Fitflops. I've never worn Danskos beyond their clogs but they have these which seem to be along the lines of what you're looking for. Fitflops have tons of flats but I'm not certain there are any closed toe sandals.

I have heard only amazing things about Tieks. Sadly none of the reviews were from people with high arches so I'm hesitant. Do you think they'd work?

We're getting closer! I can't do a heel though.

QOTD: Do you lace up your shoes differently than what most consider the standard method? Pic below:
comfort%20fit_0.jpg

ATTQOTD: I normally use the method above, but have had issues where my toes felt like they where squeezed together and used the method shown for high arches. Worked really well at the time.

ecee1be6d93b249e971a91e72755f912-1.jpg

ATTQOOD: I've been struggling with whole-foot numbness on hills. My shoes are two years old so I'm going to the running store soon to get a replacement and have them check my feet out, but until then I've been lacing my shoes this way. It's definitely helped. An article I read said it's supposed to help for wide feet but I have narrow feet.

DSC01640-Custom.jpg

Mine is very close to this one. I have a high instep, and I get a pain across the top of my foot when it swells if I do it the normal way.

Yea, I'd agree somewhat with the strengthrunning guy. The type of footstrike isn't necessarily something you want to change (mid, fore, heel). The location of where the foot comes down though I believe is important. I'd disagree with him on tip #2 dependent on how vague he is with the "don't change anything you've been doing if running for 3+ years idea". I do believe there are things that can make us better. Tip #3 I can't speak to as I don't know anything about it.

I like Jeff Gaudette from Runnersconnect.net so I'm likely to agree with many of his premises in the linked audio interview in your article: http://strengthrunning.com/2013/10/proper-running-form/

True confession. I don't pay attention to form, or cadence, or footstrike, or anything really. I just run. I do try to make sure my arms are low and loose, otherwise I get pain in my shoulder.

^THIS!^ And I'll add that unless you can watch yourself running in a mirror, what you think you're doing to present good form isn't necessarily what you are doing.

Fact. I run really weirdly, and I really thought I looked normal.

Edit*
QOTD: What is your next goal race?

My next for sure race is a 5K in September. I have a few I'd like to do in between, but we'll see. The next one I'm concerned about it the Princess 10K in February. I had to defer it this year.

Here's the North Face website for it. Mine is an older model, so it looks a bit different. Not sure if there are any major functionality changes, though.

I do not need more backpacks...I do not need more backpacks...

ATTQOTD: My dad - it would be more of a stroll. But I miss him all the time.

At first I was thinking of someone famous and I thought, "Ryan Reynolds runs!" but he's so hot, I'd probably trip over my own feet.

My serious answer would be my grandparents. It would also be a stroll, but I really really wish I could talk to them now.

I finally got the results of my MRI. I'm so sorry. While I don't know that much about your particular injury, I wouldn't "try to talk him into" letting you run. I would suggest asking him if you can walk, maybe. You don't want to risk making it worse or damaging yourself in a way that can take you longer to recover.

For a long time my two favorite athletes were Lance Armstrong and Michael Schumacher. I would love to go on a run with either for two different reasons. Michael would be number one because it means he has recovered from his devastating head injury. F1 drivers are some of the fittest (and bravest) athletes in the world, no need to convince me. It sounds like we are at the exact same place with Lance...I defended him for years, felt like an idiot when he came clean, but now just accept it. Unfortunately that was the way the sport was back in that era (hello baseball?) and what's done is done. Still a phenomenal athlete and considering everything he overcame it still blows my mind what he accomplished despite the doping. I remember how excited I was when he started racing half Ironmans and the thought of him doing Kona and then all the dirty details came out and that was that. Would have been so awesome to see him compete against the best in the world in swim/bike/run.

I finally got the results of my MRI. Apparently the doctor usually has the patient call for results but he told me he would call me, so he was waiting for me to call and I was waiting for him to call. Oh man, so sorry to hear this. I hope you're able to still do the upcoming races, but more than anything I hope the surgery helps and strengthens the ankle, allowing you to do future races! Just remember that there is far more to running than the marathon...if your body won't allow you to run a marathon then set your sights on being the best half marathoner, or 10K runner, or 5K runner that you can be!

Swimming is worth a shot, it is a great workout and you can get away without using the feet and ankles...all they generally do is point back, the kick should come from the leg (hip) itself. You can even use a pull buoy if it helps make the ankles and feet feel better and that eliminates the need to kick entirely.

You seem so determined to meet your goals that I can't imagine this diagnosis will keep you down too long...you will find a way to reach 210 even if running isn't part of the equation. We are here as a group to cheer you on along the way and encourage and support you however we can! I believe in you.

I'm sorry for the bad news! I really hope you can find an activity that makes you feel good while your ankle heals.

Would this be to big for most rides? Dimensions are 21.5x12.5x9.5
What do you use or family member?
I don't carry a backpack, just a cross-body bag, but I can tell you that I see plenty of folks in the parks with HUGE backpacks - like, multi-day hike-sized backpacks. And I know that some rides (Soarin' comes to mind) just have folks stash bags too large to fit in the net off to the side.

I finally got the results of my MRI. Apparently the doctor usually has the patient call for results but he told me he would call me, so he was waiting for me to call and I was waiting for him to call. Well, it turns out I have a moderate tear on my peroneal tendon.
I'm so sorry :( FWIW I partially tore one of my peroneal tendons some 30+ years ago - I was told to stay off of it and let it heal... and I didn't. I continued to dance on it (ballerina) until I literally couldn't anymore. IDK if they simply didn't do surgery back then, or if they opted not to because I was so young, or what, but not resting it has had long-lasting consequences. It did eventually heal on its own, but I have a lot of scar tissue there, and scar tissue isn't as flexible as tendon tissue, so it's an ongoing, chronic issue. A runner friend of mine had surgical repair of her torn peroneal about a year ago and came back better than ever. So please don't think this means an end to your running! Just a short break. I think swimming might depend on where the tear is - I know when mine is acting up, the kicking against resistance in the pool is bad for it. But aqua running - IF I tape that ankle up well and keep my foot flexed - is a great workout.
