The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the longest distance you have traveled for a race in terms of both miles and travel time?

ATTQOTD: Miles - Baton Rouge, LA to Boston MA ~1,600 miles. Time to travel - Baton Rouge, LA to WDW. 10.5 hour drive

Distance: Worcester to Anaheim, driving to Boston for flights from Boston to Chicago, Chicago to San Diego and then driving to Anaheim. ~3000 miles total. Travel time, ~10 hours with layover and driving times.

Travel Time: Worcester to WDW: 1300 miles by car or about 20 hours travel time by car not including stops.

ATTQOTD: Flying 852 Miles Houston to WDW. Driving 9 hours or around 500 miles Houston to Tulsa for Route 66 Half

Do you mind sharing which screen protector you like? I thought I would be in trouble without one on my Apple Watch, but I've been lucky. It's pretty hearty it seems.

I simply searched for "235 tempered glass protector" on Amazon and I think only one company came up. The glass company is based out of Kirkland WA so even though it didn't come directly from Amazon it arrived very quickly. And then I realized I ordered the wrong one (the drop down menu went floopy on me or I messed up) and exchanging it was a breeze.

DH suggested it because it's what he uses on his and DS's android phones, and they've protected the phones well in several falls.

Took the plunge and ordered the 235! I hope the HR monitor works, I'm so excited to see what my HR zones are and VO2 max etc. Gotta start reading about them now ...

HR has worked very well for me. Far better than my Polar ft7 chest strap! And that was highly rated, but I was always having to fiddle with it, and I'm not going to wear that all the time lol.

Not sure this helps, as I don't use custom orthotics and don't know what/where your injury is, but I deal with chronic peroneal tendonitis thanks to an old injury and CurrexSole insoles have been a total game-changer for me. I cut them to fit and they don't budge within my shoe at all.

What are your symptoms? I think I've got that problem right now. It's not fun. It will be even less fun if I have to give up my Nike frees. But I put on a more built up pair of Nikes I have (all my other brands of "big" shoes are stored during our house move) and they felt like prisons. And they hurt right over the outside edge of my foot right where the tendon goes. Sigh.

Before you buy the Edge Touring you should check out the Edge 520. You can load maps on it as well. Reviews on it are very good, check DC Rainmaker. The Touring's big flaw for me is lack of ANT+ or Bluetooth, meaning you can'r pair speed and cadence sensors or power metres with it. That might be totally fine for you, but it was a real surprise to me when I was looking at them.

I did see that but when I ride I have my 910XT for that functionality. What made me land on the Edge was that I want to use it more for planning routes than tracking rides. I like not having to pre-load anything but just hitting a few buttons and setting up trips on the fly.

I've got a 520 and love it. It's the perfect size, easy to read, and can be set to display pretty much anything you want or need.

What are the odds? Another Holly Springs resident on the board!
Hey, I remember running the Goofy in 2014 and during the Hollywood Studios portion of the marathon I ran with a guy from Holly Springs...that name kinda stuck in my brain for some reason. He was weaving a bit and struggling and my race had already gone to crap at that point so I ran with him and made sure medical was able to help him out. He was able to get the help he needed and crossed the finish line.

Excellent, glad you saw that...just wanted to make sure you knew before purchasing. I have an older Edge 500 that I use...it works fine but it no longer connects to the computer to upload rides (though it still charges with the USB), so I just record the ride on my 920XT for upload later. A bit clucky but it works, and I would probably be wearing my watch regardless.

Pretty sure the 520 will be my next cycling purchase, whenever my 500 dies. Looks so slick. Really thinking about adding the Varia rear radar as well, too many close calls with motorists on the country roads.

ATTQOTD: Jax to DL for Tink around 2400 miles. We flew 4 hours to Las Vegas for a night and then drove another 4 hours to DL.

@Waiting2goback I have orthodics the podaitrist gave me when I was having tendinitis issues, she ordered them for my shoe size and they don't move at all.

..any thoughts on Nike Pegasus 32 and Brooks Launch 3?
So, I have been wearing Nike Pegasus running shoes for 20+ years. Most recently, I bought a pair of Pegasus 32s - the denim colored ones - and I am not thrilled with them. I am also a forefoot striker and something about this shoe just isn't holding up well during longer runs. Feels great when walking or running short distances, but not when my mileage goes beyond 5. I am keeping them, but I found a bunch of Pegasus 31s on eBay and bought them instead of buying more of the 32s.

ETA: So I decided to do a little more research on the main differences between the 31 and 32 - it is the stiffness of the shoe. The 31 is very stiff (rated an 8 out of 10), and the 32 is very flexible (rated a 2 out of 10). Given my recent broken foot I guess that the flexibility is probably my problem on long runs. But if you like more flexibility in a shoe, it might be better for you. BTW - stiffness/flexibility in a shoe is measured by how much you can twist it when holding the toe and heel. More flexibility means greater chance of turned ankles and more stress on the feet if you run on uneven surfaces. Since you run mostly on the streets of FL, this might not be a problem for you at all. I run trails almost exclusively.

ATTQOTD: furthest I've travelled for a Running Event
But DC to MCO/Orlando airport, Magical Express to WDW, walking to Bus to get to Epcot for 5k, 10k, HM, and Marathon, running Dopey, walking to Bus to get back to hotel, plus walking around all of the parks for 4 straight days......that has to add up to at least a million miles, right?

I've done the reverse this week.. Mco to DC- running 2-5 mile morning runs and logging at least 30,000 steps a day for 4 days and it's FELT like a million miles so yes..

My farthest distance- MCO to John Wayne (Anaheim)

And they hurt right over the outside edge of my foot right where the tendon goes. Sigh.

That is exactly where my foot pain is right now when I put on my shoes. Right on the outside edge of my right foot where the tendon goes! Sigh indeed! I don't get a diagnosis for another week though once I see my doc.

Looking for some advice. I have recently started a gym routine. I am going 3 days a week and running 5 days a week. I realize I am sore now because its a new thing, but wanted to ask do you change things up any the week or days leading up to a race? Skip leg day, proceed as normal? my next race is June 5th and I think I will be in a constant state or soreness each week leading up to that...

Impatient here as well...picked up my 235 this morning...haven't run with it yet, but love the way it feels and look so far.

I have a want... I don't have the justifiable means to pull the trigger without getting a lot of negative comments at home.

This is just me(no technical reasoning here) but I would drop your strength routine, particularly legs the week before a race. Don't think you want that extra work out on them.
