The Running Thread - 2016

Well May is just full of random celebrations. So I will try to keep it somewhat running related.

QOTD: Its Cinco de Mayo! How many miles will you have to run to burn of the Mexican food and drinks that you may consume today?

For those running the Chevron Houston Marathon, registration is open today!

ATTQOTD: I WILL be Celebrating thanks to a rescheduled birthday dinner with my wife and $2.99 Margaritas at a local establishment. Both will happen tonight!!! Ran 5 miles this morning, but I'll try to hit the gym for quick workout before son's LAX game and dinner. Guilt-free consumption is always the best.

Houston Marathon--tempting. Anyone run it before that can share pros and cons?

Well, I've run it, but it was 15 years ago. Some pros and cons will still apply. The course is flat and in my opinion scenic. It goes through some nice Houston neighborhoods and from what I've heard is still well supported. The weather can be a pro or a con though. It looks like in recent years the weather has been great, but like Central Florida Houston can get hit with one of those January days that are 70 degrees and 100% humidity (like what we saw at this year's WDW Marathon).

Ours here in central Arkansas has been too! Not looking forward to the normal weather, lol!
Just for fun, I went on Accuweather and looked at the predicted weather in Millington TN for the Navy 10 NM race next month - High of 90 with overnight low the night before of 69!:eek::eek:

Still better than what I will be dealing with at that same time in Baton Rouge...

Nice course but not very well run. Lots of problems in recent years with running out of water on the course, running out of medals at the finish, and crowding along the course. The new route has taken away some crowding concerns. Usually good weather. A great beer stop at mile 24. :)

ATTQOTD: Poor planning here - we had Tacos last night:) But, I am always happy for a reason to have a margarita, so I probably will. Spent nearly two hours working hard at the gym today (cross training day) so I think I have earned it:)

And the weather here in Massachusetts has been miserable. Rain, rain and more rain. The rain is bad enough, but it has also been cooler than usual. I'm ready for at least some 50 degree runs.

Two more races to add:
June 18 Run for Refugees 5K - will be running with DS10 so goal will just to make it a fun experience for him
July 25 Temple to Temple 5K - again running with family for fun :)

@LSUlakes you can add me to the list for Dumbo!

3-4 - Kathymford - Dumbo Double Dare (Goals: 10k 1:15, Half: 2:50) - not sure both of those goals in one weekend are actually attainable, but maybe I'll hit one or the other. haha.

My only Cinco de Mayo for me. Just Civil War tonight! :)

85 years old and he's faster than most of us. I love his attitude about his running & how if he doesn't want to, he rests. Good advice.

I feel like in 40 years we will be reading a similar article about Meb. That's pretty impressive for sure.

The weather in NH has been miserable the last week or so... it is in the 40's and ranging between downpour and drizzle. :( The long range forecast for my half next Saturday is looking ok, 50's and clear before clouding up and raining in the afternoon, but of course it's 9 days away, so it could change 9 times. :)

I am planning to do ~2.7 miles today (well I'm planning to run a certain route and that's how long it is, not that I'm planning to run that specific distance :) ). Still debating what to do this weekend. I had planned originally to do 11 miles, and then my half is the week after, but I'm thinking I should go shorter, like 6-7, and let my achy achilles heal up some more. But then I'll be going into the race with only a 10 miler 3 weeks out from it.

Yep, it's been raw and miserable here in MA as well. I did run in the rain the other day though. I actually got to 7 miles. I pushed through the wall and actually felt pretty good. I have tomorrow off so I am planning another 6+ miler tomorrow. My ankle hurts though. I am icing it now. I will be calling the doctor for this one. I need to make sure there is no damage before I start pushing the mileage.

QOTD: I personally don't get the big deal with this day. I understand what it is but it just feels like a reason to drink. I don't drink so to me it is just May 5th. Sorry if that makes me boring. I didn't run today, I will be tomorrow though.

I am on duty this week, so no celebrating for me. But a visit to our favorite Mexican restaurant this weekend means I will need to compensate with my long run! 15 planned for Saturday.

Yeah, both of my boys are in their late teens, so millennials. Neither has any interest in running, but I don't buy the bit about fearing competition. All of the young people that I know compete in everything that they do. They are just not as into individual competition. I think that this guy needs to look a little deeper in his analysis of these young people.

I do agree with the part about classification.

“They’re pushing back on that, in a sense saying, ‘Don’t classify me that way,’” he says. “‘I don’t run 5Ks because I’m a runner. I run 5Ks because I like to be fit.’”

That generation, and probably all subsequent generations, hate to be labeled - and they don't label others. I agree with this thought process, which is why I said earlier in this thread that I do not consider myself a runner, just someone who runs (among other things).

QOTD: Do you have frequent mantras or motivational phrases that you say each race, training run, periodically? This may be a philosophical piece or just "go go go". I've heard of many that use this kind of thing to keep them going. Do you imagine a race, a condition or a person? What mental images, words or other habits motivate you?

ATTQOTD: For each race I take the approach of Pre with "To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift". So each race may not be a PR, but I will give my best effort for that day. Then for training I like the "Every morning in Africa a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning a lion wakes up. It knows it must outrun the slowest gazelle or it will starve to death. It doesn't matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running!" If that fails, then there is youtube. For races, I try to learn as much about the route as possible so there isn't any surprises. I then imagine myself taking on the challenges of the course and my plan for difficult parts of the course. For WDW marathon this January I somehow missed the overpass around mile 20 ish, by that point my whole plan had fallen apart, but that overpass took a lot out of me and I was not prepared for it. With upcoming races, I plan to be more prepared to avoid the "Oh $h!&" moment.

I'm so jealous of everyone at Tink this weekend. It was my first half marathon ever last year, and my first runDisney weekend! :) I had so much fun. Three ladies that I'd never met in person from a weight loss forum made a plan to get together and do the race. We had such a fun weekend (plus my and one other spouse were there too in a non-running support role :) ).

One thing that I do is convince myself that the first 10 miles of the marathon are the warmup. When I hit mile 10 I call it mile 1. This means I only have the 16 mile long run left. I've done that long run several times and it felt great.

I just keep reminding myself that I'm not actually in that much pain. In actuality I'm feeling great and that I probably should speed up.

Lastly I don't pay attention to my garmin during races at all. I can be a serious mental downer in races if things aren't going my way. But if I keep myself blind to my actual time then I can keep reminding myself that I'm doing great. Then there's no middle race goal adjusting or calculating what I need to do. I just keep doing my best. Just continuing running by effort. Whatever the clock says at the end is the best I could have done.

I strongly believe in the Perception of Effort effect. Music, positive thinking, sleep, and caffiene can all be amplifiers of performance because of their effect on the perception of effort.
