The Running Thread - 2016

Ooh, that's good to know. Because of my job, I'm out on/in water a lot. Up until now, I've used Lifeproof cases and they are wonderful, waterproof to 6 feet.
Yeah, I'm not planning to submerge it or anything, I just worried about rain and sweat with mine if I didn't use the ziploc bag. I have been fine with the ziploc bag, but then I can't use the camera. If you don't take an Instagram to pair with your Strava run, did the run really happen? :D

@Dis5150 is natural sugar ok? Could you put one of those halos/cuties small oranges in your pocket? Would it be too weird to peel it on course during a walk interval? It sounds like something that would need practice (at least for a clutz like me)

Question for anyone who wants to chime in. I am currently not eating sugar or wheat. Can anyone suggest some racing fuel to try for my Half a week from Saturday? I have just been using raisins and will use them for my rescheduled Crawfest 10k this weekend but I'd like to try something different for a half. I used to use a mix of M&M's, candy corn and pretzels but I really don't want to go back to sugar and wheat since I am feeling so good avoiding it (plus lost 5 lbs and 9 inches, 5.5 just from my waist, in 30 days). Has anyone tried dried pineapple or almonds?

Raisins are what I have used when I was looking for natural food options for running. Do you feel like the raisins aren't working for you? I would assume that dried pineapple or any dried fruit would work the same for the most part. I've seen people suggest sweet potato. Cook, mash, add salt, and put in a zip lock bag. I haven't tried it myself. Runner's world has an article about this. They advise against nuts due to the fat content.

There's also Huma gels, my gels of choice. They do have some sugar in the form of evaporated cane juice and brown rice syrup... I'm not sure if that would be too much. But the fruit flavors are made from pureed fruit and chia seeds.

Honey? Dates?

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I will give them a try and look for the gels. :)

Dried Apricots. They are high in potassium too!

Please be very careful with this... I have known way too many runners who have had injuries when they switched to zero drop. If you decide to go this route, I would suggest a very slow and methodical transition to avoid injury.

TY @opusone! Your concern is mine also. In fact, I don't think I'll switch unless I get fitted for them-just too much of a risk! :thumbsup2

I hear dates are good, and might try that soon. I'm also trying to stay away from refined sugars, but honestly I'm not worried about race fuel. Convenience, packaging, cleanliness, and all that.

Watch out for dried fruits! Some have a good bit of sugar added, so check the labeling. You may have to head to Whole Paycheck to find the good stuff.

And way to go!

I got some pineapple chips in my stridebox this month. They're from Natural Sins. They're really sweet tasting but I don't believe they have added sugar beyond what pineapples naturally have based on the sugars in a similar amount of pineapple. I ate some for breakfast before my 10 miler this weekend and had no problems. I like almonds in general but have not tried them with running.

Thanks! I was thinking about not worrying about it for races and just doing my normal thing but I'm afraid once I eat sugar again I will start craving it again! It's a slippery slope lol!

QOTD: What is your 'gotta have it' nightly sleep regimen? How little sleep does it take before you know things are not going to go well the next day?

ATTQOTD: I can function on 5-6 hours if I have to, but it's not pretty and I have to get more the following night. 7-9 is better, but 10 is ideal.

Has anyone done gasparilla, in Tampa? I'm considering it but don't know if I'm up for the half. Maybe 15k. I've never gone that distance before!
I ran the half this year... but I'm not sure I'm any good for a review, lol! I live in the area and, frankly, run far more scenic routes near home, so running Bayshore wasn't much of a thrill. It's an incredibly well-run/organized race with great swag, a really nice expo, and a terrific post-race spread. I won't do the half again next year, but I'm in for at least one of the other races!

QOTD: Its May 4th. Which Star Wars film will you be watching today?

ATTQOTD: Probably none - I'll be lucky to see 30 minutes of free time before bed!

No time for Star Wars movies tonight, we are Civil War prepping! We watched Age of Ultron last night and I want to see if we can fit in Winter Soldier tonight. We see the new Capt. America tomorrow night! So excited, but conflicted! I don't want my boys to fight! Ha. I'm such a nerd! :yay:

Yes, NB was the one brand that it was easier to find wide widths in (and to be honest, my wide pair was actually a little too wide!), but unfortunately the ones I tried didn't really work for me running-wise. I was running in a pair of 1080v3's. I found the sole to be too flexible. I had the same problem with Asics Nimbus (where only like 1-2 colors came in wide). I wear the Olympus in Altras, mainly because they were on deep discount vs the Paradigm and I was just trying them out (the Olympus are in their trail shoe category but are classified as road/trail, while the Paradigm are the road only ones), and I love the big thick firm sole.

I need a stability shoe too (lucky me with bunions!), so I was looking at the Altras Provision or Impulse.

ATTQOTD: Definitely Force Awakens. Solely out of laziness, since I can access the digital copy easily.

This is the reason we basically switched to everything digital. LOL.

My very first 5K was Gasparilla back in 2005 and I did both the 5K and half in 2014. I absolutely love the event and plan to do it again. The Hyde Park area is my favorite place in Tampa and I really like the pirate theme so the race checks a lot of boxes for me. It is also the perfect time of year to escape an Ohio winter even if I wasn't prepared for the humidity in 2014.

If anyone wants to read a too-long race weekend recap by me about Flying Pig in Ohio, it starts at bottom of this page. There's lots of pictures of pig related things :)

I'll have to check out your recap. This was my third Flying Pig (and first 3-Way Challenge) and it has become my favorite race. Somehow I managed to PR that course back in 2012 but I really felt the miles from the 5K and 10K this time so it became my second slowest half. Considering the course and the miles the day before I was happy with my time though.

No movie today but Episode V is by far my favorite.

No Star Wars here because I just don't like Star Wars! And I have my kids cross country meet in a bit followed by dinner and baseball practice. By them time I'm done, mindless tv is all I can handle.

I love the Civil War and that they are doing it in the MCU. I just wish they had given it better treatment. I wish they would've done a multi-phase series like they are with the Infinity Gauntlet instead of shoving it in a movie in the Infinity Gauntlet series. I think it's far to complex to leave to a single movie.
