The Running Thread - 2016

Random: I just ate my W&D cheese packet with the Harvest Snaps snap pea crisps I got at the expo. :D The cheese was not as life changing as I was led to believe it would be... but the Harvest Snaps were actually really tasty!

I am afraid to try a trail race at all. I am afraid to get injured on some roots or a rock or something. Congrats on your accomplishment!

.
Thanks that's a pretty valid fear. About 100 people ran this race (yeah it's pretty much like Disney) Of those there were 10 DNF's, 3 of which were due to broken ankles.

Congrats on completing an ultra!
Thanks

QOTD: Does your clothing choice differ for racing and training? i.e. Do you always race in shorts, yet dress more for the elements on training runs? Do you choose something less worn out because there are thousands of strangers in view?

ATTQOTD: Yes my choices are different. For a weekend long run I will just run in any running shirt I have, but on race day I normally run in a singlet. I do a few training runs in a singlet, just to make sure there isn't any issues. I have never ran with any sort of long pants, because it just doesn't cold enough for me to do so here.

I try and think a little bit more about what I wear for races. In general I assume I'm going to be warmer during a race than a training run because I'll be working harder. As a result I tend to wear less for races than for a comparable temperature training run. I also try and make sure my clothes at least kind of match. Also for Disney races there is much greater chance that I'll be dressed up in a crazy costume. The likelihood of me wearing an pink elephant costume is much lower during training runs.

ATTQOTD: For races I like to match and wear my most favorite/comfy outfit for the weather. I love running in costume as long as it's functional and appropriate, like Disney. My weekday runs however are mostly in the early morning darkness so anything goes. One might say I even look a bit Punky Brewster-ish (ok, I may be dating myself here)!

You run in one high top and one low top with a bandana tied around one of your legs too? Phew I was worried I was the only one.

For training, whatever matches the weather and is on top. Even old worn out stuff is fine. For a race... only the good stuff, and it has to look sharp. I think it helps the mental preparation to take some care in choosing a race 'uniform'. And if you look good and sleek, you'll feel ready to go. Ever notice your car just has a little more pickup when it gets its first wash in a while? :) That's what you're going for.

I love being able to wear completely wacky things when I am out running. Colours can clash and I can wear turqouise leopard print leggings if I so wish (my pupils have used it as a way to recognise it's their teacher running). I do love wearing long sleeves so I can put my thumbs through the holes however as the weather is warming up it is becoming more sweaty to run in long sleeves (22 degrees celsius today).

Got heckled today by a guy driving past. First time it has happened to me and it just made me so angry. I know I don't look like a runner and sometimes (probably most of the time) I am not pretty when I run. I am kinda glad it happened 8 weeks after I started running as I could see it really knocking my confidence if I had only just started. I managed to run for 15 minutes today without stopping which is my achievement of the day.

In 6 days and several hours our fellow poster @CheapRunnerMike is going to participate in the Boston Marathon. Being that this particular race is a bucket list / goal marathon for a lot of folks and a race that I pay a lot of attention to, I decided to make the days leading up to Marathon Monday about the marathon itself. (We will still have our normal QOTD, but I will also include additional info about the marathon. After all, its the super bowl of marathon IMO) The work required to get a BQ is no easy task, and for those who went the charity route, well raising $5,000+ is a equal challenge as well. On your way to toe the line, you get to see this sign. Its one of those moments when you see and it you realize, Im about to run the Boston Marathon.

I am very excited about this years event!

Seeing that sign gave me chills!

Love it! As a local I can tell you the weather forecasts have started being updated nightly on the local channels, and in typical NE fashion, have already changed twice! But currently looks good to me. Staging along the finish route has begun to go up as well. DH works in the area.

@Hannahinwonderland you posed the question earlier this week about motivation. Follow the events leading up to the Boston Marathon, and watch it if you can on Monday. I know I am pumped up about the race and am lacking zero motivation just reading about it.

I saw that posted on facebook the other day. Very exciting times!

I've never particularly understood the mentality of the heckler and even less so in the arena of running/exercise. I'm glad it didn't discourage you.

I get heckled a few times a year too, usually references to my running tights and the individual's interpretation of my sexual orientation. Being heckled is initiation into the running tribe, so welcome to the club!

I wear pretty much the same thing. I just usually choose something in fun colors or with a cute saying on it for a race (for training too, but I don't really worry about it that much in training.). I get really hot really fast when I run, so I run in capris and short sleeves most of the time. If it's really REALLY cold, I'll wear long pants and a light jacket with gloves.

We have a large group of forum members running at least one of the Disney races this weekend. I saw the medals for the first time and have to say I am jealous! Looks like yall are going to have better weather for the weekend than we had for marathon weekend!

Good luck to all!

I don't know anything about Star Wars, but those are pretty awesome!

For a race, I pick from the same pile as my training gear, but I do usually pick a favorite at the time, and I always wear as little as possible during a race because I know I will heat up once the race starts. On cold/cooler race days, this usually means that I will be slightly uncomfortable as I wait for the start but fine after the first half mile or so. I do hate being cold, so it can be a very fine line. For training runs, I wear whatever is appropriate such that I am comfortable given the weather conditions. Also, like @CheapRunnerMike, regardless of what I am wearing on the rest of my body, I oftentimes have gloves on if it's 40°F or less. My hands must have horrible circulation.

Same here! I get SO hot! I may run in below freezing weather with short sleeves and capris.

That is sad. What a waste of magic cheese. lol

I am pretty afraid of that too! I'd love the scenery, but I have enough injury issues without tempting fate, so to speak.

I'm not sure if I'll ever run a full, but if I do, this is on the bucket list. Good luck to everyone! I wish they showed it on TV nationwide!

I care and plan and think about what I will wear to a race, and don't think twice about training runs. I just pull out a clean tank (or s/s or l/s depending on the weather) and running tights or capris mostly. I did have the sad experience of not having my racing "costume" hold up during princess half. It wasn't a comfort problem, but a looks one. The "Aurora sleeves" I attached to my tank were stretchy and just kept stretching and stretching and stretching and ended up looking like sad, white, stringy noodles hanging off of my shoulders. Lesson learned! Go on a LONG run in your planned costume not just a two mile treadmill test!

I just added a couple of races to my calendar. One I've been slacking on completing the entry. The other I've been scared to commit to running, so this is my commitment.

4/8 - ebradley23 - Carytown 10k (I haven't been training for speed, so getting the sub 50 I would like seems far fetched)

12/17 - ebradley23 - Seashore Nature Trail 50k (Goal? To finish my first ultra)

You can watch per the below, but I believe for most it will require having a sports package through your cable provider.

Sunday, April 17 at 8:00 p.m. ET: Preview Show on Universal HD
  • Monday, April 18 from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. ET: Live Race Coverage on NBC Sports Network
  • Monday, April 18 at 8:00 p.m. ET: Primetime Replay on Universal HD

ATTQOTD: For races I usually wear my in training shirts for upcoming Disney races. They are great conversation starters when everyone is standing around waiting for the race to begin. Other than that everything else is the same in training as for races. Except when I run Disney I try to do something themed (and I do at least one trial costume run where everyone looks at me like I am crazy).
