The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: Which season is your favorite for getting your runs in?
Summer for me. I love finally getting to be outside in the Spring, but here in the mountain west spring is very unpredictable. I always feel like the rug has been pulled out from me when I have run outside in gorgeous weather for a week and then I'm pushed inside with spring snow storms (like this week!). It's not humid here, so if I get my run done in the summer morning it usually isn't too hot.

@LSUlakes I have a couple of races to add to the master list.

Apr 15-16th Ragnar Austin Relay. (goal - survival of the hills!)
Nov 6th - Texas 10 Conroe (1:17)

I love the QOTD too! I have learned about new products, techniques, etc., things I would not have known about otherwise. Plus I love hearing others answers and comparing to my own. I love having a place I can ask questions or whine about my running without people rolling their eyes at me (at least I can't see if you do!) :)

QOTD: Since we hit 100 pages yesterday, I would like to know what has been your favorite part of the thread thus far? What would you like to see more of, and anything we should avoid?
I think the daily question and the schedule with everyone's races on the first page are the highlights.

I enjoy the question of the day and people's responses! It's fun to come here with people who get this 'running' thing! Hearing how other's races or training runs go is cool too, helps to know I'm not alone in a way if that makes sense!

Love Ragnars. Good luck and have fun!

Thanks, I am pretty sure the team I am on will be having a blast, even with the hills. Most of us did Texas Independence Relay a couple of years ago, and we did the Ragnar Hill Country trail relay last fall. I think we will also be doing the Capital to Coast relay from Austin to Corpus Christi later this year.

I'm so glad @LSUlakes started this thread.
Just a few weeks before it debuted I was contemplating starting a similar thread but what has been created and evolved here way surpasses anything I could have come up with.

I really enjoy hearing about the successes and sometimes downfalls of everyone's running adventure.
The race calendar is top notch.

I love everything about this thread. I'm horrible about posting to it but do stop be to read it everyday.

Here is another video showing the fall from a runner's perspective as well as Kamworor catching back up through the field. Keep in mind he is passing elite runners around him, so it really goes to show how crazy fast he is. And look at how fast his cadence is compared to the other elite runners around him.

He makes them look as if they are standing still, it's crazy.

Glad you are enjoying it. I meant to make a comment about 100 pages yesterday, but had to deal with some stuff at work.

ATTQOTD: I would like to thank everyone for participating and keeping this thread going. I enjoy seeing what races people are running and hearing about how the race went.

Thank you LSUlakes for starting this thread. As for my answer, I like it all. It's a good group of people from all levels and experience. I love the support, the information, the lists of races, and the QOTD. I was bummed when the marathon thread died off but this is just an extension of that with some added people making it even better.

Good luck to anyone going after Wine and Dine today! Was going to do it this year but not decided not to when they changed things up.

It was a "must-do" race for me until they changed it as well. I don't like the changes. I can understand the challenge being added but it needed to stay a night race IMO.

Thanks everyone for the kind comments! Lets see how the next 100 pages go!

Funny story tonight, my wife got home late from work so I headed to my office to use the treadmill to get a run in. Get in and change and notice I forgot my socks... Im not crazy enough to run on the TM without socks on, so I just spent some time lifting weights instead. I am a little disappointed about not bringing socks. The last two months of running are extremely low totals for me, and with the move coming up in April my totals may suffer some more. I am hoping to get things moving in the right direction soon. I have a 5k next week that I am not expecting to much out of, but my race in June is a goal race and I need to get the miles in to achieve that goal. Moral of the story, don't overlook the small details.

I know I could not pick one specific part of this thread as a favorite. It has been an interesting, enjoyable and educational thread. I love reading about everyone's journey. What they have gone thru, how they overcame obstacles, the support that has been shown, and the tips and tricks to make everything better. I love it.

And I see we have been moved over too!!!

ATTQQTD: I love seeing what races people are running and hearing everyone's thoughts on the QQTD. I'll be busy this coming week or two and may not have time to check the thread but I look forward to seeing what I missed when I get back.

Been there.. When they offered the cast rate for the resort gyms I used to run where I worked (contemporary) but that day I went over to the wilderness lodge gym. Only to realize I had no running pants.. Rather than skipping I hit the gift shop found a $40ish pair of shorts and called it my stupid tax for the day.. Never again did I forget...

Todays QOTD was suggested by @roxymama . I thought it was a great question. If anyone else was like to suggest a QOTD, feel free to send me a PM.

QOTD: What are your tips for racing a new distance? Do you try to get a fast time on your first attempt at the distance or are you more conservative to just try to finish the distance?

ATTQOTD: For each race I give my best effort regardless of distance. Now my best may vary depending on training, but I set a realistic goal for that day and go for it. For any race the first goal is to always finish, but the training I put into should get me to that point. I guess my best tip I can provide is to properly train for the new distance, and race day becomes a victory lap of that hard as well as a test of how bad I want it. Good luck on the new race distance!

I have an incredibly difficult time, whether in training or a race, stopping myself from going as quickly as I possibly can. This is not particularly good in training and has been a less than stellar plan of attack on anything longer than a 5K in terms of pacing myself. On the other hand, I have finished every race I have entered and it may just be my own rationalization when I don't finish as quickly as I hoped to blame my preparation/plan.

I guess it depends. My first time doing a 10k, I wanted to use it for a POT for a Disney race so that one was definitely for time. My first time doing a 10 miler was at Disney so that was just for fun. My first half, I told myself it was just to finish the distance but I secretly had a time goal and I squeaked in just under my goal. I think it's hard to let go of having a time goal completely unless I have an external factor like taking photos at a Disney race or running to keep someone company like I did for RnR DC.

I've definitely had stories of being unprepared at the gym too. I forgot my sports bra once so I ended up on the elliptical. I forgot my shoes once but thankfully there was a yoga class starting so I switched to that instead.

I'm just getting into longer distances, read more than 5k, but my goal for all my upcoming races is to put in the best time I can. I have set time goals in mind already, but that may change due to training and other factors, but I'm not one to run for fun at a race, even if it is listed as a "fun run". Running is fun, but competition is more fun, even if I'm just competing with myself.
