The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

Most: Garmin 920
Least: Race belt that the local tri shop gave me for free

This question makes me think about how expensive triathlon is...I'd rather think about how much I shell out for that gear, and let's just say that Ironman registration fees makes Dopey look like a bargain :scared:

I really enjoyed everyone's stories yesterday

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

ATTQOTD: Forerunner 620, kinda regret. Cheapest is a pair of gloves at an expo for $1.50.
If you're talking about gear , my garmin 235 is my most expensive option. If you include travel and race fees probably goofy weekend 2014. Least expensive thing, throw away gloves or gu.

Yeah, I'd really like to do either a half or full ironman. I swam competitively up till high school, am an avid runner and a decent mountain biker, but the time commitment, fear of biking on the road and $$$ for a nice road or tri-bike have kept me away from it.

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

The most expensive was full cost on two pair of running shoes. Decided I wanted to have a second pair on hand. It came to over 300$. Won't do that again. Cheapest was 1$ for throw away gloves at a marathon expo this past fall. I kept mine though. I can still totally use them and a dollar is a dollar. 599 more of those and I should have Dopey covered!

Most expensive - Garmin. For me, the best investments that I have ever made. I have been running with Garmins for many years. This was my first:

Least expensive? Probably some fueling product. I have bought many for less than $1 over the years.

That's real?!? I really thought you were joking. How old is it?

All of your running stories are great. I had to grab for the kleenex's on more than one occasion.
I'm just catching up on the thread. Finished GSC a couple of weeks ago and am getting back into the swing of things.
My most expensive was the fee for GSC, my garmin would be next. Cheapest-throw away gloves bought at wally world.

I worked as a California State Park Ranger for 6 years - 3 at Richardson Grove State Park and 3 more further north at Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. I spent a lot of time in Garberville! Small world.

Too funny! When we moved to Garberville in '86 my parents ran the KOA campground in Richardson Grove. I worked at The Great American Hamburger Company. Don't know if it even still exists, lol! :)

Thanks everyone for sharing their stories yesterday! So touching and inspiring! I have only been running about a year and didn't feel like I had anything to contribute to that question.

ATQOTD: Most expensive, definitely my Brooks. DH about had a stroke when I told him the total ($190 total shoes+$10 inserts)! Wait till I tell him how much next month's registrations are going to cost (Infinity Gauntlet registration on 4/5 and Goofy on 4/26!!)Least expensive probably throw away gloves .50 at Walmart.

XTERRA Off Road Triathlon! No need to get a new road or tri bike or worry about riding on the roads, plus you get to run trails :)

ATTQOTD: Most expensive would have to be my Disney marathon weekend trip. My girlfriends and I really lived it up. I should start saving now for Dopey 2018! Least expensive would be my shot bloks.

I have this watch, lol!!! I only stopped using it about a year ago. I definitely need an upgrade!

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?
The most expensive was a yearly gym membership. I paid cash for the whole year because I had read reviews that the gym was not good about stopping your credit card from being charged if you were paying month to month and didn't want to continue with the membership (sometimes they would charge an extra month). This was the first time I had ever used a treadmill, I think I ran 7 or 8 times on the treadmill at the gym, only 2-3 miles at a time and it HURT. The first day we had clear of snow I ran 6 miles outside without any pain, I never stepped foot in the gym again. LOL The least expensive would be music downloads from Amazon.

Yesterday's ATTQOTD: I started running after a miscarriage. I was sad, stressed and physically exhausted when I showed up to a couch to 5K group. I remember running 10 seconds, walking 50 seconds...gradually adding on time and miles. That summer running took that place of a self-pity and depression. Instead of a due date I had my first 5K. What running does for my head is priceless! I'm amazed at the metaphor that running is for life.

Today's ATTQOTD: Most Expensive is my Garmin 405. I LOVE that watch. I feel so attached to it because of all the miles we've done together. Its paint is wearing off, the charger is so weird, and the touch bezel is a nightmare, but I don't care. How could you not love something that puts all of your runs onto a computerized map? It's my little talisman of training. It's my second one after the 205. I loved that one too, but gave it to my mom when she wanted to do some walk/running.

Least expensive: Cut the legs off my husband's old silk long johns to make 2 very nice buffs. FREE. Apparently my head is a men's medium.

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

By far and away the most expensive item is the airline ticket from Australia to the US every time I do a runDisney race

Least - my fav Brooks socks, which came free with a running magazine.

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

For me it would have to be the bib for the Goofy Challenge a year ago. Like everyone next would be the multiple pairs of shoes. The least would be the gels with a close second of the stuffed animals I just wore with the Ariel costume for the Princes half a couple of weeks ago.

QOTD: What is the most expensive item have you purchased for running? The least?

My trip to Disney for Princess! After that it would be my shoes and my leggings that cost nearly as much as my shoes. Cheapest... my sport jelly beans and my lock laces. Both were inexpensive but oh so valuable!

BTW... the next time I decide to go running on cement, would someone remind me of how my whole body has hurt since Wednesday's run on cement?

@LSUlakes....your story and perspective are amazing. You were right there in the middle of it. Glad you and family made it through okay.

Have you been back to Boston to either finish or try it again?

Since I didn't cross the finish line I was given the option to run again the following year. Prior to the BAA making that announcement I had already decided that nothing was going to stop me from going back and finishing that race! Went back and did all the things we planned to do the year before! It was one of the greatest sporting events I have ever been a part of.

Wow, some amazing stories from everyone yesterday. Very inspiring to read.

As a someone born and raised just outside Boston and back living again in Central Mass, @LSUlakes your story brought tears to my eyes. So much tragedy and terror that day. I was fortunate no one I personally knew was injured, but it was a scary few days waiting to hear everyone was safe. I was on the Dream when the bombing happened without much internet access. I had several friends also running with the liver foundation and I wasn't able to be sure they and their families were safe until we were off the boat. I cannot begin to imagine the fear for you and your wife. So happy your okay, and I hope you get a redo someday!

Running has been my stress relief like others. I had a cancer scare in 2013, right when I started running coincidentally. My PCP basically said I had cancer, but follow-up showed she was wrong. It was a benign kidney cyst. Still being followed to be safe, but everything seems ok. It also has been a great stress relief with my dad's now 5+ year battle with stage 4 lung cancer.

ATTQOTD: I guess challenge race fees would be the most expensive cost wise, but item wise it would be my Garmin 225. Least expensive are the $2 gloves I bought at the 2015 PHM expo for the literally and figuratively Frozen 5k!

See above. Joined the team again but as a runner with a bib. It didn't feel right to run it without giving back to the organization that gave me the opportunity to run it in the first place.

Here's a funny story - - I discovered one of my pairs of arch supports in one of my running shoes was from June 2013, oops. I did run probably 6 months without any when I switched shoe brands (which in hindsight wasn't smart), but this pair was probably used for a good 1.5+ years and many many miles! I thought they were newer for some reason, but all of sudden I was thinking something feels weird, well I compared them to the new ones from fall 2015 (in my other shoes) and boy were they flat, like pancakes. So I checked on Amazon and yep they were from June 2013. So, I guess now my lesson is to label arch supports with the date they got put in use...as they don't always start with a new pair of shoes. Just thought it was a funny story about some very flat supports which even the thought of wearing shoes from 2013 is terrifying, doh!
