The Running Thread - 2016

The race list is updated in the OP. If for some reason you are not on there, or have new races to add, let me know. Keep up the hard work everyone!

This week we have the following folks with a race @FFigawi @DOOM1001 @Disneyland_emily @bumbershoot and @Dis5150 . Hope training has been going well for yall and good luck this upcoming weekend. If you would like to adjust your goal let me know. How has your training been for the race and how is the weather looking for race day?

QOTD: Miranda is my name. :o I feel like maybe there was a rule a loooooong time ago when I signed up that you were supposed to use a real name, but I am not sure if that is the case. I don't usually use my real first name for forum names, I mostly use the pig latin version (irandamay) now, so I don't know why I would have here, but I signed up 15+ years ago so the memory of why I would have used it here is gone. :)

@Keels I am so sorry you are injured! I know how disappointing it is to miss races you have trained for. :( But glad you are taking care of yourself and letting it heal! But yeah, it sucks. :( :(

I ran it two years ago. It's a well put together race. Starts early which is good because it can be warm. You start off by running through a golf course then onto some gentle rolling hills with the navy's horses. Later on you run on base where kids spray you with water. The finishers medals are awesome. Looking forward to it this year. Hopefully I can get our house sold and moved into a new one soon so I can get back to regular training.

I am looking forward to it too! I am a bit worried about the heat but getting sprayed by water sounds great! Those medals look fantastic! Thanks for the info. :)

@Keels Your are a trooper for finishing through that kind of pain. Takes a strong person to do that! Sorry to hear you are sidelined so I'm thinking healing thoughts for you!

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?
Mine has two parts...roxy has been my nickname for forever and ever. Since I was a wee lass. It's straight from the musical Chicago after the main character roxy. I was a dancer and I'm from Chicago. I loved doing swing, jazz, flapper routines...and it just kind of stuck. Everyone calls me that now.
Mama is because that's what my kid calls me. I do not claim to be a foxy-mama though...more of an awkward goose than a fox.

I had another disboard name years ago when planning my honeymoon and I could not remember it or my password so I just made a new one.

@Keels sorry about the injury. That really stinks. :( Great job on finishing the races even though you had to have been in a great deal of pain. I'm glad you are being smart though and taking off the needed time to let yourself heal. I'm sorry you had to defer on NYC though.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: ZellyB - My name is Gisele and Zelly was a childhood nickname (my family still uses it a lot) and B is the first initial of my last name.

I'm loving this QOTD.

Barca-For FC Barcelona, my favorite football team. The "c" pronounced like an "s"; or with a lisp to sound a bit like "th" if you want to get super technical or are actually from the region.

Thanks for this! In my head I've always said it with a hard c rather than an s sound. I thought maybe you really liked barcalounger recliners. ;)

@LSUlakes could you add another race for me? We just signed up for the Shamrox 15K on March 12. No pace or goals set for this one. Just looking to have fun on St. Patty's day and drink some free beer after the run. :drinking1

Since yesterday was the last day of the month, its time to post our monthly totals.
A crowd pleasing 47.44 miles. That did not go as planned.

No problem. Did you book a room already? It looked like the host site hotel was filling up fast. I think a very small group of us are making the trip, but may have some people make the move at the last minute... Another thing I though of, around mile ~8 (I think) they had a group of guys handing out beer! Of course I took some and then ran the last few miles 30 seconds faster per mile. If you are lucky enough to win a AG award, they look really nice as well. Its my goal to place in the top 3 in my AG. I have my work cut out for me though.

Thanks for the support! My training has been going well, mostly because my coach is gearing everything toward my half-ironman race in April and forgot about this one. With jet lag, several really tough bike workouts, and a 3500m swim this week, there's clearly no taper or intensity reduction heading in to the weekend. As for the weather, I wish I was racing today when the high was 73 and not Saturday where the high is supposed to be 90. I just hope the water stays cool enough to be wet suit legal.

Not very interesting with my username... my normal ones were already taken, so I went with one of my backups, but Opus One is a wine that I have enjoyed in the past (although it's probably been over 10 years since my last glass of Opus One - it's just too expensive now).

Getting back up there in mileage. My next two months will each be mileage PRs if run as scheduled (246 and 252 miles). Getting excited for the May Wisconsin Marathon! :yay:

Welp, I'm shut down for at least three weeks until another x-ray.

I finished the Cowtown Challenge this weekend (5k on Saturday, Half on Sunday), but around mile six the pain I've been having in the top of my right foot was almost unbearable. By mile nine and the massive hill back in to downtown, it was starting to affect my entire gait and I was hurting EVERYWHERE - like pain I'd never experienced before. So, I took it even slower than I was hoping to ... I did finish, because I'm not a quitter and I was that far in, so I might as well finish. But I HURT. Like HURT.

But a visit with my doctor this morning kinda confirmed what I had a suspicion about going into this weekend - I've got a small stress fracture in my right midfoot, and I still have some serious "tendon distress" between my big toe and second toe on that foot. They likely go hand-in-hand.

So, I've cancelled my registration to NYC Half next month, which sucks because I'm out that registration fee - but at least I get a guaranteed entry into 2017, so all is not lost. But I've pretty much cleared my race calendar between now and Tinkerbell. I'm off my feet for three weeks, and then I can resume non/low-impact activity (swimming, biking), and then hopefully by April 1 I'll be able to get back to casual/easy runs to try to build my base back up before Pixie Dust in May.

I think my plan is to take it pretty easy from here until the end of the year - the only races I've got serious $$ committed to are Disney races (Pixie Dust, Dumbo Double Dare), and I would like to still get to Memphis for St. Jude in December. But I guess I'll just rest, heal and then focus on marathon training for 2017, whatever race combination I decide to do over Marathon Weekend.

I am so sorry you have to deal with this. Injuries suck. I hope the time off lets you heal up and enjoy your remaining races this year!

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: LSUlakes = One of the popular places to run around Baton Rouge is around a series of lakes near LSU's campus. I often find myself there on the weekends getting in my long runs. Its also a place that nearly every long distance race has part of the route near. From the lakes I can run into the heart of campus, along side Mike the Tiger, Tiger Stadium and then down to the Mississippi river. I am also a big LSU fan, so the name just works for me.

My name is probably fairly self explanatory to Disney fans. My parents bought into DVC in 1994, back when a point cost $56 versus today's 160+ (retail at least). We've been using it ever since, and its lets us go as a huge family, usually 10-14 people. I'm a big fan, and I think I joined the DIS around the time they added me as a full member, which is why it was foremost in my mind around that time.

56.5 miles for me.

Great QOTD! I'm guessing not a single person would have guessed the "Dis" in @Dis5150 's username actually stood for dispatcher and not Disney. As a fan of Van Halen I had a pretty good idea of what the 5150 represented. Very cool to hear everyone's explanations.

Mine is pretty obvious:

Run = I love to run
Disney = I love Disney
Dad = My family is my inspiration.

Monthly miles: 39.25 (I'm in training mode for an 8k so my long runs are maxing out at 4.5 miles right now)
March miles should be: 59.5
And then my race is 4/3

Edited: Ok so I was complaining about getting a late corral in my upcoming 8k because I think my proof of time submission got goofed up. But now I see that my husband is in same corral and my father-in-law got one before us and they are thinking we all just run from the same late corral. We wake up later because it's the last wave and we can walk from their condo onto the start area. I was going to ask for corral change but I think I may not now. From my father-in-law - he says this doesn't get a large walking crowd because the cut off is 1:15:00 for ~5 mile race. So maybe I'll be just fine. Ok...corral freak out over.

61.0 miles for me! Pretty low, but I start marathon training this month so I'm sure it will increase!

Haven't booked a room yet, thanks for the reminder! I will do that today. I didn't know it would fill up this soon! It will just be DH and I. He doesn't run but during my training he rides his bike with me so I never have to go out alone. Wow free beer! Awesome, but not sure it would increase MY time as I am a lightweight! I'm pretty sure I won't place in AG unless there are only 3 of us in mine! I am NOT fast! Good luck to you though! :)

Fun question of the day - - Cavepig is for the warthog pigs on Big Thunder...When my siblings and I were younger we called them cavepigs and said they roamed the caves of Tom Sawyer Island...so we would snort our way through the caves saying cavepigs were hiding.

Monthly mileage is like 60, but I'm not training for anything specific any time soon, just trying to get back to normal running with my injuries.

My training has been good. Ran Princess on the 21st, then 4 miles this past Sunday. I have been able to drop about 20 seconds per mile since my half in December but during Princess that all went out the window with all the people! So hoping I can do better in this half. And the weather forecast has been great, 40-50's at race time with a high of 74 race day. But today they added rain so who knows? Arkansas weather is a lot of wait and see.

ETA: This half will qualify me for Half Fanatics which I am pretty excited about. 3 in 90 days and 2 in 16. :)

@LSUlakes I waited too long and the host hotel is full. :( Oh well, I will wait till closer and hope for a good deal somewhere else.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: I loved the movie "Brave." I really identified with Merida, partially because when I was a pre-teen/teen my favorite way of dealing with stresses was to escape to the barn to ride my black horse. Never turned my mother into a bear, though ;)

My own "Angus" passed away a few years ago after a very long, happy life as my big pet, so I picked the user name MeridaAndAngus in his memory.
