The Running Thread - 2016

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

I am in my 39th year of my full time job. Just over 15 years ago I got a second job at the local motorsports park working over in the drag racing side. When I did drag race I was in a very slow SUV. One of the fastest racers out there told me one day that I was so slow that the race track had to use a sundial to measure my 1/4 mile elapased time. So the name stuck from that point on. Anytime I raced after the nick naming my SUV was called "The SunDial Express". :lmao: Still work there, just haven't raced in about 5 years.

So, I need to pick your brains about blisters I did a half on Sunday and while I got a smaller one on the ball of my left foot, basically the entire ball of my right foot turned into one massive blister. It had me walking the last few miles which ended a pace that would have had me smashing my PR. I have gotten them every race, no matter what kind of sock I use, and after pudding body glide all over my foot. I'm considering taping, and switching up my shoes. Any input? As far as training goes I'm only getting hot spots. It's just super frustrating.A

Have you tried wearing two pairs of socks? I know it sounds counterintuitive, but it works! I was very skeptical of the idea but my current pair of Ultimate Frisbee cleats gave me terrible blisters and I finally tried double socking. No more blisters. Ultimate tends to be a lot of sprinting and cutting/changing direction, so it's very challenging on the blister front and I don't see why the technique wouldn't apply to running as well.

I'm joining this thread. Now that Princess is over, I'm feeling a little lost. The only race I have scheduled is the Color Run which should really be called the Color Stroll. I've decided to start the Galloway 10k training all over again. Just hoping to improve on my speed and endurance.

Me too! I'm eager for my next race! I need to find a qualifying 10K to use as my POT for the W&D Half.

As far as the QOTD about usernames:
Mine is pretty basic on this forum.

My name is Nikki & I think I'm a Princess :D

The Tracer360 was discussed in the running safety QOTD recently. If anyone was serious about picking one up, they just sent me a coupon code for 30% off and free shipping. Drop me a PM and I'll be happy to pass it along. It's not personalized, so any number of folks can take advantage.

QOTD: Lets discuss safety while out for a run. If you run before sunrise or after sunset do you wear reflective clothing, lights, or anything else to make yourself noticeable? Do you have routes you avoid for your safety? If you are listening to music while running, how do you stay aware of your surroundings? If a sidewalk or running path is not available, do you run with the flow of traffic or against it? Any other concerns about safety while out running?

During the winter I have a night run once a week. I run at a cemetery because the roads are usually cleared of snow and I don't really have to worry about traffic. I keep one ear bud out so I can hear what is going on around me on my night runs and always wear my Road ID. Sometimes in the summer when it is hot I will run a trail in the dark. I love to do it with my music up loud but sometimes I freak myself out thinking about someone being in the woods beside the trail.

FFigawi is my hash name. I got it for two reasons. One, I had set a trail where we were running under a canopy of plants where we couldn't see the sky or anything around us to know where we were. Two, I grew up sailing in New England, home of the Figawi regatta, so named because the fog in and around Nantucket can be quite thick. In both cases, the phrase most commonly heard is "where the figawi?" :)

My dad always called me Precious (actually my cousin called me that first but that is a long story) and when my husband gave me my first email account, he gave me PreciousPups since we also had two puppies at the time. I have used it on various forums for about 20 years now.

I am looking forward to it too! I am a bit worried about the heat but getting sprayed by water sounds great! Those medals look fantastic! Thanks for the info. :)
I was supposed to do the Navy 10 Miler here but it was in January and I ended up being sick and not doing it. I was only doing the 5k and I'm glad I bailed. We had rain, snow, freezing temps and it turned out hey mismarked the course so the 10miler became a 7 miler instead. It wasn't nearly as fun sounding as your version!

@flvy - I had blistering problems decades ago when I was getting used to running. I used Wright socks to overcome the blistering. Wright socks have 2 very thin socks within one another. The idea is that the friction takes place between the two layers of sock rather than against your skin. It worked for me until I found the right shoes (heck, I had no idea how important shoe fit was back then). Now that I know how to find shoes that fit properly I can use any socks - blistering has not been a problem for me in decades.

I believe that the real key is finding running shoes that fit properly, keeping them tied with appropriate tightness, and paying attention to your feet every day after your runs. My feet are baby soft, so it is not the presence of calluses that helps me today - it is my shoe fit.

@flvy - I've had similar issues and will also endorse Wright Socks. They made a huge difference.

You could also try using KT Tape or similar in the area affected, even a Band-Aid just to see if it helps.

The other suggestion already mentioned would be about your shoes. Have you been to a running store to make sure you have a good fit and shoe for your running style? Inserts might also be helpful.

QOTTD: My daughters and I had just returned from a trip to WDW when I was joining here. Mickey had flirted with me at lunch one day during our trip and Mickey's Sweetheart was a joke suggestion for a screen name but I couldn't think of anything else so I went with that.

I've hashed a few times! Never a dull moment! The ones in Florida are pretty wild, lol, so I've only done about 3 trails.

Running a bit behind schedule today.

QOTD: What is your ultimate running goal? (running a distance you've never tried before, to qualify for Boston, something else)

ATTQOTD: My goal is to go sub 3 hours for a marathon, which would almost guarantee a spot at Boston. The goal is to do this before turning 35, I'm 32 and running out of time.

I waited too long and the host hotel is full. :( Oh well, I will wait till closer and hope for a good deal somewhere else.
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully something opens up soon. I would check back when it gets closer incase some one cancels.

If you have ever gotten glued up with DermaBond instead of stitched, I did most of the development and transfer to manufacturing for the process to make the glue itself
A few years ago I got to use this product. You see, what had happened was... I was shucking oysters and I kid you not, just took a sip of my first beer of the day. Went back to shucking (It was my first time doing a whole sack) and the knife slipped and the blade went into the web of my hand between the thumb and index finger. Still have a nice little scar from that to remind me to use gloves and I since learned better techniques to prevent a similar experience.

Ultimate goal is to qualify for Boston. Don't know if I'll actually run it, but qualifying for it would be really cool. Current step that journey is completing the Dopey Challenge in under 7:11.

ATTQOTD: Hmmmmm. It's tough for me to say an ULTIMATE goal. I always have goals that change year to year because I need that to keep myself motivated. This year, I have a few goals...
Qualify for Half Fanatics
PR in a half marathon
Qualify for Marathon Maniacs
Sub-5 marathon (PR)

Looking to do Dopey for the first time in 2018.

My general life rule is also my ultimate running goal: "Have fun and improve yourself!" If I'm doing these two things, I am happy.

I used to have various race goals, but at 46 now, I have already met those: run a marathon, finish an Ironman, participate in the Hood-to-Coast relay, etc... I've never really been interested in running Boston (although unbeknownst to me I was only 1.5 minutes away from qualifying on my first marathon), and I will never be as fast as I was when I was younger, so PRs are in the past (although I have reset my PRs to over-40 PRs to give myself something to strive for). All this is a long-winded way of getting back to "have fun and improve yourself!"

P.S. I might add one more race goal if I think my body can handle it: Dopey.

So, I have specific goals for each individual run when training for something, but my ultimate goal is just to enjoy each run. My PRs are behind me, and I have learned that they are no longer important to me. What is important - living in the moment - enjoying today for what it has to offer. That extends to everything in my life - especially running.
