The Running Thread - 2016

February Training

My doctor allowed me to start training again in February, though I could not begin running until last week. My total training:

28 hours of various P90X workouts
5 hours on my elliptical (I hate the elliptical, or this would have been higher)
13 miles of running

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

camaker goes back to the early days of my career. I started out making medical-grade super glue, cyanoacrylate, or "ca" so I was a ca maker. If you have ever gotten glued up with DermaBond instead of stitched, I did most of the development and transfer to manufacturing for the process to make the glue itself. Still have some scars from the early days in the lab! Since it was the basis for my e-mail address, there just never seemed to be a reason to change it as a unique username over the years even if those gluey days are long past.

As for training, it's been a pretty good month working towards the end of my hamstring rehab. Got 86.1 miles in and feel pretty ready for my first half since Disney Marathon Weekend in two weeks.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

Great answers from everyone here...it has been cool seeing where these names have come from! Mine comes from a blog I used to write (now it is only updated if I feel like posting a race recap) called 3 Cheap Runners...as you can guess, I'm Mike, I'm a runner, and I'm cheap :)

February (Running) Training Report
I'll leave the swimming and biking out of it...

Total Miles: 148 miles
Total Time: 17:28:00
Average Pace: 7:05/mi

Thanks for the support! My training has been going well, mostly because my coach is gearing everything toward my half-ironman race in April and forgot about this one. With jet lag, several really tough bike workouts, and a 3500m swim this week, there's clearly no taper or intensity reduction heading in to the weekend. As for the weather, I wish I was racing today when the high was 73 and not Saturday where the high is supposed to be 90. I just hope the water stays cool enough to be wet suit legal.
I'm really jealous...we're expecting a snowstorm this afternoon and you get to race a tri this weekend. I love racing, can't wait until our weather improves. Good luck, have fun, and say hi to Javier Gomez for me (although I think he's actually pulled out of the race)

QOTD: You put in the miles and train hard for a race, and on race day things did not go as planned. Everyone has a off day and unfortunately it happened on race day. What is your response to having a bad run/race?.

When I have had a bad event run I knew it could happen in advance because the proper training was not there or not following the fuel plan. I am the only one to blame. Other than that I have just enjoyed the run and what happens doesn't ruin it.

QOTD: Lets discuss safety while out for a run. If you run before sunrise or after sunset do you wear reflective clothing, lights, or anything else to make yourself noticeable? Do you have routes you avoid for your safety? If you are listening to music while running, how do you stay aware of your surroundings? If a sidewalk or running path is not available, do you run with the flow of traffic or against it? Any other concerns about safety while out running?.

I do almost all of my running at night. I am in a good neighborhood so worrying about traffic is minimal. I also have strobe lights on all 4 sides along with a white or fluorescent shirt. I run strictly on the edge of the road. I do switch sides every 1/4 to 1/2 of a mile. I do train the joints to be used to the camber.

I love staying on the outside edge during an event as not many runners will be out there. Especially at Disney. Also minimal weaving.

As for music, always during training as during events. During training most of the time 1 Ear bud will be in.

QOTD: How do you handle shoes for training. How do you know when your shoes are wearing out. Do you track your milage in a pair of shoes or do you do it by the way they feel?

I have 2 pairs ready to use. 1 pair gets more use than the other. That one pair is tracked thru Garmin Connect. Did not use that until about a year ago. Before just went off of feel and whether I wore a hole into the ball area. Hey they still felt good for me. 3rd pair are broken in and ready to take their place in the cycle. 4 pair still in the box.

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: LSUlakes = One of the popular places to run around Baton Rouge is around a series of lakes near LSU's campus. I often find myself there on the weekends getting in my long runs. Its also a place that nearly every long distance race has part of the route near. From the lakes I can run into the heart of campus, along side Mike the Tiger, Tiger Stadium and then down to the Mississippi river. I am also a big LSU fan, so the name just works for me.

IamTrike. My nickname is Trike because its a shortened version of my last name. I am boring

Hope your legs heal keels.

166.9 miles for Feb.

Welp, I'm shut down for at least three weeks until another x-ray.
Noooooo?! I'm so sorry Keels. Rest up and follow orders!

QOTD: What is the meaning behind your username?

ATTQOTD: This one has been fun to read! I forgot my first username from the original Disboards platform, and a coworker had begun calling me "PrincessV" so that's what I used when I had to make a new profile. The meaning is ironic in nature: I am soooo not princessy, lol! "PrincessV" is like the anti-princess ;)

Qotd: was my nickname at the store i worked at since there was 5+ other emilys and i tended to go to disneyland a lot (while living in utah)

Feb milage was 90 miles

And for my race this week... Goal is to finish. My surgery last week set me back farther than expected so its still iffy ill be able to safely start/finish..

Monthly total for February: 65 miles
Feb 1-12= 65 miles
Feb 13-29= 0 miles (back pain)

Went to a gym/Wellness center today and got a membership and will be doing an assessment on 3/16 and PT after that.

Alright you guys. I'm a little late to the party per usual, but I'm here. I had some reservations about posting my race schedule, but I got over it for the most part. Plus I need some advice.

So, I need to pick your brains about blisters I did a half on Sunday and while I got a smaller one on the ball of my left foot, basically the entire ball of my right foot turned into one massive blister. It had me walking the last few miles which ended a pace that would have had me smashing my PR. I have gotten them every race, no matter what kind of sock I use, and after pudding body glide all over my foot. I'm considering taping, and switching up my shoes. Any input? As far as training goes I'm only getting hot spots. It's just super frustrating.

Anyway. I have a pretty fun race schedule so far this year with a few challenges thrown in. I'm not sure about time goals because I'm making huge strides and my goals for my April/May half marathons won't be near the goals for the ones later in the year. I'm sure I'll slide in another 10k or two, but so far pending entry to Avengers and Las Vegas this is where I'm at.

I'm curios to see other people's replies. Have you tried the wrightsocks. They are double layer socks that are designed to prevent blisters. What about the way you lace your shoes. Do you use the top eyelet to lock the shoe down?

Hmmm... that would definitely be frustrating. Body Glide is always my go to when I'm having blister problems, so I'm surprised that didn't work for you.

What about the way you lace your shoes.

Good thought @IamTrike. Could your forefoot laces be either too tight or too loose? I could see either one of those possibly affecting blisters.

It worked till about 5.5 miles when I felt the rubbing. By the time I realized the aid stations had Vaseline (so smart of this race by the way) it was way to late.

I didn't even think of this with the shoes. I actually even made them looser because my last long run I tied my shoes too tight and got shooting pains. I have a suspicion that my shoes may also be a tiny bit to big so I'll be going to the running store next week to figure that part out. I'll have to try lacing with the eyelet my next run and see now that feels. Thank you for the sock suggestion as well I have the website open right now!

ATTQOTD: Alexce is my dad's name. Never met another one, and it's almost always available.

Feb mileage was in the low 30's. I'm kinda stuck mentally, where the long runs are feeling impossible (so dumb, I ran my last half in January). So I need to get in gear for Dark Side weekend.
