The Running Thread - 2016

I am back from WDW. Boo! Had a great trip, despite a bad half experience. I am pretty upset with myself about how I reacted to the disappointment, especially now a few days later when I really think about how it went and realize it was nowhere near as bad as I was thinking in that moment.

I went into this weekend knowing I was somewhat undertrained. My dad had major health incident on Christmas, which kept me at the hospital or in the car driving to the hospital for over a week, taking away that week+ of training. I rolled my ankle a few weeks later necessitating a few extra days off, then got a bad cold and bronchitis, again forcing me to take extra days off because it aggravated my asthma. I knew all this, and knew I was not going to PR anything, nor do I feel like Disney is the place to try for PRs generally.

The 5k I did with my 7 year old daughter, and the plan was always to run/walk and stop for pictures. My Garmin time was 1:16, moving time 57:04. That one I was fine with, because it was all about my daughter, and time was nowhere on my radar.

The 10k I started with my sister, and we were in corral A. Wow, what a difference starting in A. It felt like a different course being so uncrowded. Unfortunately my IT band started around mile 4. From there I chose to slow down a touch and walk all downhills because they really aggravate my IT band. My time was 1:06:20. This was a little disappointing, but not a huge deal because I knew I had my reasons for slowing down, and wanted to go into the half without knee pain from the start.

The half was my real disappointment. I started in D, and again, the relative lack of crowding on the course was a real bonus. I had previously started in F (2014) and I (2015). I felt great and was keeping my 9:45 pace through about mile 4, but then my knee started hurting, and bad, felt like it was stuck in a bent position, I couldn't extend it right. At the same time, I was experiencing stomach cramping. Clearly, something I ate the previous day really messed with my stomach because by the time I got into MK I was desperate for a bathroom. Spent an unfortunate amount of time in the bathroom, and then got back out there. My stomach kept cramping and the knee pain came and went. I decided I would turn the race into more of a fun experience, and took lots of pictures. Luckily the lines were all pretty short, never more than 10-12 people deep. I got Woody and Jessie, Genie, the groomsmen by the wedding pavilion, Mrs. Incredible, a castle shot, and a few others. I also jumped in front of the Epcot ball. I hit every medical station for biofreeze for my knee and took tylenol at one of them. My final time was 3:00:44. Now, with all the time in the restroom, the walking due to my knee, the pictures I stopped for and the medical stops, I look back and say that really isn't that bad considering everything I had going against me. But, in reality I felt pretty crushed about it as I finished. I think it was being over the 3 hour mark. I saw my husband, kids and mother and just felt disappointed and sad. They were happy for me that I finished (I had texted my husband what was going on so he'd know why it was taking so long) but I was upset and just wanted to go. I am so annoyed with myself in retrospect. It will likely be my last glass slipper for a while, going to try other race weekends I think, and I didn't take any pictures. I was also a little upset, because my sister and I had agreed ahead of time we would race the 10k separately, and run the half together, take it easy and have fun taking pictures together. But, once I said I had stomach troubles, she took off and PR'd. I am happy for her and glad she had a great run, but I was a little upset that she didn't stick around at least until we got through the Magic Kingdom together to get some of those pictures.

Sorry that race report was so long, guess I need to let some frustration out!

Awww.... DVCFan... I'm sorry you had a disappointing experience with the half. The knee and stomach issues definitely sound like they made for a difficult race. It's always hard to have perspective right after the race though. Don't be so hard on yourself. There's a lot going on in that moment and emotions take over. Reason and perspective come afterward.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

ATTQOTD: I don't listen to music during my runs so I don't have much to add here.

The storm has passed and everything is fine. Some folks did not have the same luck. Tornados aren't all that common here, so usually their warnings aren't well received. I haven't heard of any deaths in the area, so that's a positive to take away from the day. Now hurricane's are something we are used to and most of us know how to respond when one approaches. I feel like we are overdue for one this summer...

The storms are almost here in Raleigh. I can hear the wind hard against my office windows. Glad it seems like yall made it through safely.

ATTQOD:
My current speedwork motivation song is Immortals (from the big hero 6 soundtrack)

Another related QOTD at some point might be " What podcasts do you listen too on longer runs"

Plenty of good songs to pick from...two that really get me going are the theme from Pirates of the Caribbean and I'm Shipping Up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys.

Dropkick Murphys is a great selection. A lot of there stuff is a big boost for me. I particularly like the rendition of Cadence to Arms, especially early in the run. The way it starts more traditional, and then about half way through the guitars, etc kick in is a great booster for me.

Sorry to hear about the race. It's weird how an arbitrary milestone like 3 hours that we set for ourselves can bum us out. It sounds like you made the best of the situation though.

@DVCFan1994 I know that this is probably a silly thought, but if you stopped for bathroom and pictures, then you probably ran more than 13.1 miles and so therefore your true 13.1 mile time is less than 3 hours. Ok, I know that's not how most people count these things, but I hope that helps a bit.
Also, I'm super proud of you for making the most of it and not giving up. It's frustrating when your body does not want to cooperate, so I totally get it.

@DVCFan1994 Glad you were able to finish despite your troubles!

ATTQOTD: I almost always listen to music when I run. My playlist has a wide variety, from CCR to Pitbull. When I want to run fast I find Foo Fighters works well, as does Motley Crue (my current guilty pleasure).

@SunDial Those costumes are fantastic. You guys look great. I'm glad you had a wonderful weekend with your daughter.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

ATTQOTD: I don't listen to music on a lot of my runs because I have company, but I do have a running playlist I use at times. I try to stick to songs with a good running beat. My favorites change frequently. Current ones that often get me moving and feeling good are Classic - MKTO, Dance with me Tonight - Olly Murs, Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars

@DVCFan1994 I sorry you had such a difficult race but glad you were able to finish out. I'm sorry you didn't hit your goal, but I'd say considering everything you were struggling with and the great picture stops you were able to get, you really did make the best of the situation!!

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

I always listen to music. It helps me take my mind off things I don't need to think about when I'm running. I have a very eclectic playlist. I don't have any specific song that gets me going, but there are lots of songs that trigger enthusiasm in my runnings.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

I don't listen to music during my runs. If I'm on the treadmill, I'm watching episodes of TV shows because I find they distract me from the dullness of the treadmill better than music. One episode is also the perfect amount of time for changing my shirt and refueling before starting up again.

That said, I do sometimes get the stereo going during my bike trainer sessions. Disturbed, Clash, Dropkick Murphys, Slipknot, Rise Against, Black Flag, A7X, and other similar bands all make great indoor riding music.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

I only listen to music when I am in a very safe area and only put in one earphone. Just personal paranoia about safety for the most part. I actually listen to music during races more than any other time.

I'm a little different than most in that EDM doesn't do much for me. Some of my favorites are "Not Ready to Die" by Demon Hunter, "Tarantula" by Smashing Pumpkins, "The Pretender" by Foo Fighters, "Savannah" by Zao, "Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News... I should probably stop there, I'd be going on too long.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

ATTQOTD: My everyday running playlist is over 1,000 songs - I have a LOT of "power" songs lol! If I have to pick one... Gotta be the totally un-Disney "Move B****" by Ludacris, or the Girl Talk mix of it, "Oh No."

 I'm sorry it wasn't the race you wanted to run! And I totally get it. I went into my race-for-PR half Sunday feeling well trained, but ITBS nailed me at mile 9 and I fell off pace the last 4 miles. There's just NO pushing through that pain, right? I got a PR, but way off from the time I was chasing. I understand the sense of disappointment, even while overall it's not the worst thing that's ever happened!

Catching up on some QOTD:

Out-and-backs: Don't mind them. My longer runs are done on our trail system when most of the races I run are held - they're generally all out-and-backs. I think it helps my general mental game in the thinking of "Well, you got yourself all the way out here, how are you going to get back?"

Post-race drink: Yellow Powerade (yes, even not at Disney) and then all the beers I can get my hands on. Preferably light beer, but I'll crush anything that's not 8-percent ABV or higher. At least not right away ...

Music: Currently, anything by Run the Jewels.

ATTQOTD - I don't listen to music anymore for safety, but I used to love Skrillex and David Guetta to run too, basically anything fast beat. I couldn't ever listen to Disney music unless it was remix dance stuff.

Yesterday we had a rare Tuesday race as @Anisum was running the castaway cay 5k challenge. Hope the race went well and you are enjoying yourself. Let us know how it went!

No need to be sorry for a long post. You are welcome to type a novel out if it helps you and running. I sorry you had a bad race though.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

It is completely random for me. Everything from ACDC and Red Hot Chili Pepers or 80's mod like Depeche Mode or Yaz to Oingo Boingo. Lately it has been (as my daughter would say) "music from this century" like Bruno Mars, Maroon 5 and Train. My last run was to Garth Brooks because I watched Hope Floats recently. There is no rhyme or reason. I just like variety.

I don't like it loud though, I like the music to be low and in the background so I can hear it but still be engaged in my run and thoughts. Except if I am racing then I like it loud so I can escape into the music when the race gets more painful or for inspiration. Ok that was probably too long, sorry!

Not gonna lie, I have a crapload of 80's alt too...DeMode & Yaz are on there, Cure, Souisxie and the Banshees, Psych Furs, Talking Heads, Simple Minds, TFF...it's a long list :cool1:

Good morning folks! Let me start off by wishing the best of luck to @Keels @NurseRunner , and @Baloo in MI on your upcoming races this weekend. How is the forecast looking for yalls race? Are you ready for the distance you are running? If you would like to adjust your goal let me know! @Keels your race budget is impressive!

QOTD: You put in the miles and train hard for a race, and on race day things did not go as planned. Everyone has a off day and unfortunately it happened on race day. What is your response to having a bad run/race?

ATTQOTD: Immediately following the run its difficult to analyze why things turned out the way they did. I find the most important thing to do first is to try to stay positive and enjoy the fact you just finished a race. I'll give it 24 hours before I try to pinpoint what exactly happened, and then turn the negative experience into a learning one. Usually those bad runs/races turn into motivation moving forward to not make those mistakes made in the past and to be prepared better for the next one. Yet, I also realize that some times things are out of my control. The things out of your control are often the most difficult to digest and are also the ones most difficult to get over. It may take a little longer to realize it and is often very discouraging because you executed your training perfectly. I find I look for the "what did I do wrong", and sometimes it wasn't anything I did. The next best thing to do, is to just get back out there and keep running, as well as learning from past experiences.
