The Running Thread - 2016

Depends. I know you stated that your long run so far is 6 miles, but how has the rest of your training been going? Have you been doing every training run, or have you skipped quite a few? Also, do you plan on racing the 17k or just use it as a training run (i.e. your normal training pace)?

If you have been completing most or all of your training runs AND you are running the race at your long run training pace (not your race pace), I think it would be fine and your ramp up should work. My only word of advice would be to generally follow the 10% mileage rule: do not increase weekly mileage by more than 10% each week. I would hate for the ramp up to this training race to cause you injury before the Dark Side half.

Yeah this was just a way to do a fun "training run"! So I definitely will be pacing slower and this week would be the only one that would increase by more than 1 mile. At least that's what i've told myself :)

Just to be clear, the 10% increase is based on total weekly mileage (not long run mileage), so you are fine increasing your long run by 2 miles, but when you add up this week's total mileage, including the 8 mile long run, it should be no more than 10% higher than last weeks total, including the 6 mile run.

BTW, I like using races as training runs. You definitely enjoy a course more when you are running at an easier pace.

Off Topic but can anyone tell me how they fare on crushed gravel trails vs paved roads? I'm contemplating a local half marathon that has a very close cut off time to my usual pace. I should be able to do it but I just learned that it's on a crushed gravel trail, not a paved path. It's described as a "Flat crushed gravel rail trail" and I'm just wondering if that's going to make a substantial difference to my usual time. If anyone's from around Baltimore, It's the Oldfield Half Marathon on the NCR Trail. Another website describes the trail as "10 feet wide with a stone dust surface."

I'd welcome any input :)

@Chaitali....stone dust is typically a crushed fine powder type surface. You see it used a lot in between pavers and hard surfaces. Should not have any large rocks or ankle turning debris. Should have a little more give than regular paved road. Might be perfect for that PR.

While I was home for lunch, a tornado hit a business ~3 miles down the road from me. The weather at my house was very windy and raining cats and dogs. Only ~3 more hours to go!

Everything okay now?!!! Hopefully the bad weather has moved on.

So I have been down and out since Saturday with a stomach flu/food poisoning thing. It was horrible! But feeling better and hoping to run tomorrow before our next snowmagedden hits. We are supposed to get between 6-14 inches of snow (a lot for this part of Michigan). Anyways missed a few days so here are my responses to the QOTD's.

What obscure Disney thing would you want want to see on a race medal...like you'd register immediately?

I am not sure that it is obscure but I think it would be cool if they did ride themed medals (i.e. Space Mountain, Jungle Cruise, Tea Cups). Maybe in place of the character themed medals one year at Marathon Weekend? I think that would be a cool medal.

QOTD: How do you feel about out and back courses or even sections of a course where you have to make a U-turn?

Depends on my attitude at the time. If I am having a good race and feeling strong my thoughts are "it won't be long before I am where they are". If I am sucking wind and in a struggle-fest then my thoughts are more like "this sucks, how can some many people be ahead of me, I will never make it to that point, I really paid someone to do this..." Really it is on me to make the best of it.

QOTD: What is your post run drink?

Longer distances I drink chocolate milk, sometimes on short distances to. Like when I don't want to get out of bed and think get up and run and that chocolate milk in the fridge is yours. That is usually a good motivator because if I don't my kids are sure to drink it! Generally short runs is just water or poweraide.

ATTQOTD: post run drink of choice--- Beer is good.

Gatorade, water, chocolate milk are acceptable options if Beer not available.
If given the choice, unlimited beer is a better option.

Let's go for a run @Slogger! :drinking1

My weekend was fantastic. It was a 3 day father/daughter weekend. We did not run for time at all. It was all about spending time together running and playing in the parks. It was priceless.

Lookin' good Ed! Glad you had such a good time :earsboy:

Ok running friends! Talk me down from the ledge because I'm freaking out a bit...in a moment of insanity I signed up for a St. Pats 17k on March 12th!!! I am currently in training for the Dark Side 1/2 but my training is feeling a little boring and I am generally more motivated by racing...however my recent long run was 6 miles...can I make it to 17k in 3 weeks?! I am thinking do 8 this weekend, 9 the next and then the race...talk me down!

Personally, I wouldn't necessarily go from 6 to 8 miles this weekend (build gradually). Try doing 7.5 miles this week and then jump to between 8 and 9 the following week. Treat your 17k as a training run and don't race it. You will be fine. Some half marathon plans have runners only going to 10 miles and then running 13.1 miles. Make sure that you get all of your other training runs in between now and the 17k...those are very important as well.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

ATTQOTD: I don't listen to music during my runs so I don't have much to add here.

Everything okay now?!!! Hopefully the bad weather has moved on.

The storm has passed and everything is fine. Some folks did not have the same luck. Tornados aren't all that common here, so usually their warnings aren't well received. I haven't heard of any deaths in the area, so that's a positive to take away from the day. Now hurricane's are something we are used to and most of us know how to respond when one approaches. I feel like we are overdue for one this summer...

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?

No music for me. Running is my time to think, or zone out, or get away. I've only tried running with music a few times over the years, but for me, music is a distraction and doesn't allow me to relax on the run. I know it's very different for others.

I listen to music during all of my runs. Songs that get me excited and make the effort to run seem easier...

1) Chandelier - Running Remix Vol 2
2) Wiggle - Running Remix Vol 2
3) Starships - Running Remix Vol 2
4) Boom Clap - Running Remix Vol 2
5) Cheerleader - Omi
6) Prayer in C - Robin Schulz
7) Turn Down for What - Running Remix
8) Hall of Fame - Runtastic Workout Mix

Almost every song I listen to is a dance remix so the bpm is higher than normal. It's funny to hear the songs on the radio sometimes and wonder why they seem so slow.

QOTD: If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?
Depends on things happening in my life, but they tend to be songs that resonate with me emotionally. Example - during certain times of the year I become more patriotic. At those time, songs like like American Soldier, I'm Proud to be an American, Independence Day, etc. During the Christmas season, the military version of "I'll be Home for Christmas" done by Josh Groban can lift my soul and reduce me to tears, even in the middle of a grueling run. Heck, that whole album is amazing.

QOTD: I listen to a lot of dubstep, dance, electronic, hiphop, and some pop stuff on my runs. On shorter runs, I just listen to an Apple Music radio station, so I get what I get. :) On long runs I listen to podcasts because I'm trying to NOT be pumped up. :) I do make playlists for my races of a lot of the songs that I like the best from just hearing it on my Apple Music station, or some of my favorite tracks from my Les Mills classes, but I don't have any one particular go-to song. I make playlists for races just because I'm never sure if I'll have cell coverage for streaming (with Apple Music, I can download the playlist to my phone for offline listening).

ATTQOTD: No music for me. Most of my runs are between 4 and 5 am, and I want to hear what is going on around me.

@SunDial I saw your pictures in the Princess weekend thread and those are some of the best running costumes I have seen. I especially liked your "cousin It" picture. I bet you were a hit for the other runners.

@LSUlakes I'm glad the storm has passed. Praying for everyone getting hit with snow today too; it's started here already :/

QOTD:
If you listen to music during your runs, what song will give you a little extra motivation?
Lately I seem to always run a little faster to Andy Grammar's "Honey I'm Good" and "Hallelujah"...not sure if those are the real titles but they probably are. I think anything Mumford-ish with a banjo that has a high bmp tends to get me going.
I LOVE Sia!...so @DopeyBadger mentioning "Chandelier" makes me want to maybe just play only Sia for my next treadmill session. "Titanium" by Sia is a great running song.
When I'm not especially focused on speed I don't mind traditional swing music or Disney park music :) but generally I'm listening to Top 40 stuff on Spotify run-specific pre-made playlists.

Edited to add that I NEED music on the treadmill, but I can run outside and its not necessary.

ATTQOTD: I have all kinds of random music I'll listen to so at any given time I can get motivated by any number of songs.

Two I really like are: The Walker by "Fitz and the Tantrums" and Let it Rock by "Keven Rudolf"
