The Running Thread - 2016

I just added a race to the docket. Not sure if it's worthy of updating though @LSUlakes It is a Superhero 2.5K (I didn't even though had races that short haha) on August 5th. I am going to run it with my 10 year old and 7 year old, so no goal -- other than us winning the costume contest! ;)
I agree that all races are worth listing ESPECIALLY if they come with the sub-challenge of winning a costume contest. We will need pictures, of course.

Thanks! My goal 1:30. I will be at WDW 2 weeks before the race so hoping to be able to get some training in.
Welcome to the board and I am immediately jealous that you will be at WDW soon :)

@keahgirl8 Yah, my main shoes cost waaaaaay more than $80, it's the justification of getting additional "side-shoes" that is easier when they are cheaper. Plus I have a bargain hunting addiction.

ATTQOTD: I had one of those runs last week. The best way to describe it was "cinder-block" legs. I think I did not get enough sleep for several days + a stressful day at work + it was thickly humid out + I had a long run the day before. It was just my easy day too which was extra annoying. I literally started counting slowly to 60 over and over to get it over with. Luckily I bounced back and had several good runs after resting up a bit.

QOTD: What are some signs that your body gives you that lets you know that a URD (Unscheduled Rest Day) may need to be taken?

ATTQOTD: One sign is maybe some unusual aches and pains after a few hard runs, that I know if I stay off my feet for a day will lead to a much better run later on. Another example would be when a very easy run turns into a struggle to just get a few simple miles in. I am at that point now, I set out for a 7 mile easy run last night, and 2 miles in I felt like I had nothing left in me. I pushed to get in another mile, but I was done after that. So today I will have a URD.

My unscheduled rest days are similar. When I struggle to finish an easy run, have to take walk breaks, or cut a run short, I know my body is telling me I need rest.

I am really starting to get frustrated with my injury. I think this one is hitting me harder because I was just really getting comfortable with heart rate training and enjoying every run. Plus it was the longest uninjured streak I had, and the injury this time had nothing to do with running. I am now 80% sure I'll have to defer my first full. Life commitments for me in the summer make anything other than early morning runs on weekdays hard to fit in, so while I'm getting in some exercise a few days a week, I know my fitness is suffering. I'm taking a new route in physical therapy, hopefully this will start to improve things.

I don't know if I've ever really had an unscheduled rest day due to running. Sometimes my unscheduled rest days happen because of my crazy schedule. Otherwise I would say I have to be sick, or pretty hurting to take off.

ATTQOTD: Good question. I think seeing the responses will be helpful in that I will be reminded it's OK to take an URD! So often, unless I am really sick, I have major guilt if I don't get a run in. I think I'm always afraid that one URD will turn to many. But I agree, that listening to your body is important and a day of rest can benefit your running over all if your body needs rest.

I'm sorry! I'm sure this is so frustrating!!

Wow it is hard to catch up after being away a few days! I am not even going to try and answer all the questions. Thanks everyone for the kind words about Hunter. He is still at the vet. They don't know what kind of poison he got into but it wasn't rat poison as he didn't respond to that treatment. But his blood work was better yesterday after tanking all weekend and he ate a little food. The vet is optimistic that we might get to bring him home at the end of the week. I am going to visit him right before they close today so I am hoping for more good news. Power was out 26 hours so we fared better than a lot of folks around here.

ATTQOTD: Saturday I was so stressed and my body was just like, nope, not running today. Sunday I tried to get my long run in on my treadmill but after 2.5 miles I gave up. So I guess I just listen to my body to take a URD.

I have been dealing off and on with some tendonitis in my left foot that flared up last fall when training for W&D. I try not to overdo my long runs so for me if I feel any twinge in my foot I'll take a rest day even if it was a scheduled run day. After the modified W&D in November I took off from running for 8 weeks last fall to try to get my foot to heal so I don't want that to happen again.

How scary! Good vibes for sweet Hunter. :goodvibes

Guess I forgot to list this one @LSUlakes...

July 23 - CheapRunnerMike - Bluewater Olympic Triathlon (2:15:00)

This is a fun local triathlon put on by a church about half an hour down the road from our cottage...will be the fifth straight year I've done the race. My stretch goal is to get on the overall podium, which could be possible depending on who shows up since it is a smaller race. It's going to be a tough day though as the heat index is predicted to be at 100º :crazy2: It will be a fun weekend though as my sister, wife and Mum are racing as a relay team and on the Sunday my 7 year old son will be racing as well.

QOTD: What are some signs that your body gives you that lets you know that a URD (Unscheduled Rest Day) may need to be taken?
For me it isn't my body that tells me I need an URD as much as my mind might tell me. Running is so mental that if your head isn't into for any variety of reasons it could be a good idea to take that URD.

I'm fortunate that with triathlon training I aleways have other options if my body just needs a break...swimming is so easy on the body and the water just makes me feel good, and the thrill of getting out into the countryside and "exploring" new areas on the bike are great alternatives if my running legs need a break.

With the heat they are forecasting this weekend, I think I'm going to adjust my goal to 1:30:00. I'm no where near used to running in 90+ degree heat with a heat index near 100.

QOTD: What are some signs that your body gives you that lets you know that a URD (Unscheduled Rest Day) may need to be taken?

My URDs usually come based on mental fatigue instead of physical. Occasionally I'll have some issues with my ankles that let me know I shouldn't run, but usually it's a mental thing for me. That is something I really struggle with at time, not being convinced mentally that I can run the distance or pace I'm shooting for even though my body is feeling fine.

QOTD: What are some signs that your body gives you that lets you know that a URD (Unscheduled Rest Day) may need to be taken?
The usual sign for me is that when I start to run following my warm up I'm tight or sore from the get go. It is such a rare occurrence that I know I'm going to finish going around the block and go back inside.

QOTD: What are some signs that your body gives you that lets you know that a URD (Unscheduled Rest Day) may need to be taken?
My resting heart rate stays higher than normal, and I have a hard time sleeping when I am over-training. When that happens a single day does not help - I need a week of slower and shorter runs to fully recover and get back on track. I am there now, but I expected it and built a light week into my schedule this week.

I have never needed a single unscheduled rest day from running. Frankly, I am not sure what this would help physically. It might give some folks a mental break from running, but I use running to get a mental break from everything else so not running doesn't help me mentally - it hurts me.

ATTQOTD: I can only think of a couple of times I've taken an URD. Both involved me having a stomach virus (It's a good thing I love my kid. He seems to bring home every stomach virus circulating in his daycare :crazy2:)

I'm very strict with myself about sticking to my plan during training. I know myself well enough to know that I can slip into slacking off easily. I would rather run at a snails pace than take a day off, so I don't get in the mindset of it being okay to take extra rest days. I may shift my training days around to accommodate traveling (my DH has to travel quite a bit for work, so I mainly have to accommodate his traveling), but I always get my scheduled runs in for each week.

ATTQOTD: I'm in the mental camp as well. Generally for me URD's are a result of an internal debate between my brain and body. My body says we should rest, and the brain says, nope, we are fine then I'll go run (9.9 out of 10 times its a on okay decision). But, especially in the summer, there are times when the brain totally agrees with the body.

ATTQOTD: It's pretty easy for me: If I don't want to run, I know I need a day off. It's so exceedingly rare that I don't want to run, I don't even question the why - I just accept that my body knows what it needs :)

Glad to hear things are looking better! Continued good thoughts for Hunter.

So, since I am pretty sure I am going to defer MCM in October I am considering later alternatives. Of course WDW came to mind, and I see it is still open. I have a few questions for you guys:

1)Anyone recall how late it usually stays open? I wouldn't want to sign up until I am able to run at least 6 miles comfortably. I wish rD still put up sold %s.
2)Having only ever done challenges at Disney, if I go, am I going to be miserable running "only the full"?
3)Have you flown home Sunday evening after the full? How bad was it if you did? What about early Monday am?
