Downward dog stretch works best for my calves, but this will pass as you build up strength. Just don't tackle too much at once and you will be fine.So I crossed the 5 mile barrier today and boy did it feel good. I just had that feeling that a half marathon in September maybe wasn't a step too far. I even got a slightly sweaty high five from a runner in the opposite direction which, though completely gross, was just what I needed as I was tackling an uphill section in mile 5.
Has anyone got any suggestions for good stretches for calf muscles that are beginning to be painful.
@camaker @Barca33Runner @DopeyBadger wow!!!! Your hard work and dedication, which is so easy to see, is inspiring!
Woowwww, I had a rough run this morning. It really ended up more as a walk. Humid, hot, and it was like my legs forgot how to run. My breathing was good, I guess because I wasn't moving fast enough to get out of breath! My legs were just dead dead dead, though.
I thought of you right away when I heard the news...just terrible. My heart goes out to those families, so sad.Crazy day in the city I call home.
Official time for the 10K this morning is 1:06:06. We took it easy this time and enjoyed the great scenery; running along Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline.

I'll throw mine in here while we're on the topic. They are also in my training journal and show the contrast between 335# me and 180# me. It's one of those pic sets I like to remind me to "let's not do that again!" I never imagined when I started that diet and exercise alone would net a 150+# drop.

I was thinking the road races but you provide a valid point. Remember kids, don't strap sharp and pointy multi tools to your chest.A bunch of my buddies did the ragnar trail in virginia. The medal was a very sharp and pointy multi tool thing. I don't know that I'd want a bunch of those strapped together and banging on my chest.
Diet is very important. When I don't eat healthy I will feel it on my run. In fact I felt it this morning after a splurge this weekend. I generally don't deny myself something if I want it because I've found that later I will go back and have it anyway and more of it than I would have had if I just ate it when I first had the craving. It's not really a way to live. My number one guilty pleasure is Kraft Macaroni & Cheese but I generally don't have that after runs. My regular after run reward is wine later that night.QOTD: How much of a roll do you think diet plays into achieving your running goals? Does your diet change based on training? Since we are talking about diet, what type of food or drink is your guilty please that you will reward yourself with after a hard workout/race/successful week?
I should and I think as I start marathon training I will but right now I usually stretch a bit before, run slow until my body adjusts and slow it down on the hills before I finish.QOTD: Not to long ago we discussed what to do for warming up and cooling down before races and hard workouts. Below is a bit from the book "The Little Red Book of Running" by, Scott Douglas. I thought I would share the information with everyone and ask if you agree or disagree with what it says. Would you consider changing your routine based on this info?
Congratulations! Crossing a new barrier is always exciting! So I crossed the 5 mile barrier today and boy did it feel good.
