The Running Thread - 2016

So I crossed the 5 mile barrier today and boy did it feel good. I just had that feeling that a half marathon in September maybe wasn't a step too far. I even got a slightly sweaty high five from a runner in the opposite direction which, though completely gross, was just what I needed as I was tackling an uphill section in mile 5.

Has anyone got any suggestions for good stretches for calf muscles that are beginning to be painful.
Downward dog stretch works best for my calves, but this will pass as you build up strength. Just don't tackle too much at once and you will be fine.

Woowwww, I had a rough run this morning. It really ended up more as a walk. Humid, hot, and it was like my legs forgot how to run. My breathing was good, I guess because I wasn't moving fast enough to get out of breath! My legs were just dead dead dead, though.

I had a similar run on Friday afternoon with the dead legs and heat and humidity. It's not very fun.
I guess having these "rough" outings will make us stronger and tougher when it counts.

Congrats everyone on your running events (Chicago and St. Augustine look like fun events) this weekend, your fitness and weight loss transformations, and hopefully a healthy puppy.
All very inspirational.

I'll throw mine in here while we're on the topic. They are also in my training journal and show the contrast between 335# me and 180# me. It's one of those pic sets I like to remind me to "let's not do that again!" I never imagined when I started that diet and exercise alone would net a 150+# drop.

Awesome! Just Awesome! It is so hard not to feel good about being part of this thread when you hear all the stories and see the pictures proving all the successes. I am only 30 lbs down, I can't wait until I get below 200 lbs so I can post my picture. Unfortunately my progress is going much to slow. But it is cool to be apart of this. We have people sharing stories, people meeting a races, etc...

Call me crazy, but Marathon weekend 2018 could be a really awesome time if we can all come together!

I bought a thing at my local running store to stretch out my calves when my doctor told me that would fix my plantar fasciitis. It is called the StretchRite stretching strap. https://www.amazon.com/Medi-Dyne-SR00010BW-StretchRite-Stretching-Strap/dp/B000GA99E2 I do the laying down stretch that you see in the pics on the left. It works perfectly but, for me, it hurts like death. That's how I know it's working though. You could get away with anything really but for the price you can't beat this product.

Crazy day in the city I call home.

The country has turned crazy. Sorry this is happening so close to home but it is a tragedy no matter where it happens. We had an officer killed during a traffic stop in Auburn, MA (10 minutes from my house) about 4-5 weeks ago. The guy who shot him was a career criminal who had a history of violence against the police. He should have never been on the streets to begin with. He had been in jail for 7 years and just didn't want to go back so he thought he would shoot the officer and take his chances. Meanwhile his 3 kids are growing up without a dad.

Fell behind again, so let me start by saying CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who ran this weekend!

@Dis5150 I hope Hunter is doing better now and I hope you had a wonderful Anniversary after all of that.

A bunch of my buddies did the ragnar trail in virginia. The medal was a very sharp and pointy multi tool thing. I don't know that I'd want a bunch of those strapped together and banging on my chest.
I was thinking the road races but you provide a valid point. Remember kids, don't strap sharp and pointy multi tools to your chest.

QOTD: How much of a roll do you think diet plays into achieving your running goals? Does your diet change based on training? Since we are talking about diet, what type of food or drink is your guilty please that you will reward yourself with after a hard workout/race/successful week?
Diet is very important. When I don't eat healthy I will feel it on my run. In fact I felt it this morning after a splurge this weekend. I generally don't deny myself something if I want it because I've found that later I will go back and have it anyway and more of it than I would have had if I just ate it when I first had the craving. It's not really a way to live. My number one guilty pleasure is Kraft Macaroni & Cheese but I generally don't have that after runs. My regular after run reward is wine later that night.

QOTD: Not to long ago we discussed what to do for warming up and cooling down before races and hard workouts. Below is a bit from the book "The Little Red Book of Running" by, Scott Douglas. I thought I would share the information with everyone and ask if you agree or disagree with what it says. Would you consider changing your routine based on this info?
I should and I think as I start marathon training I will but right now I usually stretch a bit before, run slow until my body adjusts and slow it down on the hills before I finish.

Congratulations! Crossing a new barrier is always exciting!

Finally, I went to a womens event at my local running store ended up winning a sports bra of my choice from the brand I wear (very exciting since they're $40-50) and somehow got roped into a 10 miler! @LSUlakes Next time you update the list could you put me down for October 23 - Anisum - Perfect 10 Miler (2:03:00 / N/A) Thanks!

I was in my vacation bubble and did not hear about what happened in Baton Rouge until last night. Heart goes out to all those affected.

I took today off work, so will be making a race recap and reading countless Disney blogs and videos on my couch. RnR stands for rest and relaxation today. Any good time-wasting videos or blogs or trip report? (Run or just Disney related?).

Good morning folks. First I would like to congratulate all the racers this weekend. Yall did a great job! The weight loss pictures are amazing, and the transformations yall have gone through shows great work ethic and determination. Congrats to you as well!

It was a long weekend for me. Friday I purchased two pairs of shoes. A pair of Saucony Zealots as trainers and Adidas Adios 3 for racing shoes/speed work. Ran twice with the trainers so far and I like them. I ran 4 miles Friday, 13.1 miles Saturday followed by pressure washing the house. Late Saturday a friend from out of town asked me to join him for a run Sunday morning, so I got another 6.1 followed by mowing the lawn. Then the news hit about Baton Rouge and I was glued to the TV. By the end of Sunday I was so drained from everything I actually went to sleep before 10PM. It was nice to get more than 6.5 hours of sleep finally.

Working on todays QOTD and will post soon. Thanks to everyone for thinking of Baton Rouge. Prayers are needed for not only our community, but out nation as well.

I tried out my new HRM at spin class today. I like it so far! It was pretty comfortable, not very noticeable on my upper arm. I don't really know what all these zones mean, though, so I should probably read a book or something that tells me how to use this data now that I have it. :D I'll try it out running tomorrow morning.
