Day 14

Up at 7.45am with the wake up call after being woken up at 7am by the radio alarm which was rather strange as neither of us had set it. Had some cereal on the balcony and enjoyed my surroundings. It is our last full day today. Our plans for the morning are to spend time at the Wilderness Lodge beach and then Tricia wants to hire bikes again (still won’t agree to a surrey bike though). Gathered our stuff together and headed downstairs. As we were passing Roaring Forks I decided I was still hungry so we went in and had my usual scrambled eggs and bacon. After my second breakfast we walked across to the beach. When we got there two lifeguards were lying on the beach apparently dead, they were being resuscitated by lots of other lifeguards. Turns out it was a training exercise and if I hadn’t had a second breakfast I would have seen the rescues from the water too. They all passed the assessment though one group were told to make sure the tube attached to the oxygen mask wasn’t twisted, the trainer did add that she was just being picky. The trainer also told Rachel she did an excellent job. Rachel was playing a dead person.

Decided to go out on the bikes first and we cycled over to Fort Wilderness. A nice bus driver waved to us. When we returned the bikes the CM miscalculated the time we had been out and only charged us for a half hour which was nice. Went to the store and bought a newspaper as the paper boy didn’t come again today and then went to the beach. Huge black clouds were approaching. We managed to stay on the beach until approximately 11.30am and then the clouds opened up and emptied their load. Managed to get the hotel door before the rain really chucked down. While waiting for the elevator I was reading the wet floor sign on the carpet. When I stepped into the elevator my little bare foot went weeeeeeee across the elevator stopping when I hit the other side. It was really funny. When we got back to the room Bounkhom had made us a towel rabbit. Read my book on the balcony for a while whilst listening to the thunder and the rain before going across to the Magic Kingdom.

When we got to Magic Kingdom we had lunch in Columbia Harbour House rode TTA and watched the parade. Whilst waiting for the parade a Disney researcher asked if he could ask a few questions. One of them was how many people are in your party including yourself. Tricia told him two, he looked at me (I was wearing a baseball cap and a poncho with the hood up) and said, “So that will be 1 adult and 1 child”. Tricia didn’t correct him. Two questions later he asked the ages of the people in the party. I burst out laughing when Tricia told him, his face was priceless. I don’t think he has ever seen a child as old as me. After the parade I phoned home and complained about it raining on my last day, this wasn’t in my plans. Watched the Flag Retreat and then took the train round the park. Rode Carousel of Progress and then we went to the shop at the Winnie the Pooh ride so Tricia could buy a Pooh with birthday cake soft toy for her god daughter Amy’s first birthday. Oh what fun we had trying all the cakes to make sure they worked. We were only buying one!!! Finally satisfied and with Happy Birthday spinning round my brain we went to pay for it. Guess what the CM did? Yes, he set it off again to make sure it worked.

Headed over to Splash Mountain as our fast pass time was approaching, my notes show no record of collecting it but we had some. We were half and hour early so decided to people watch the people coming out of the splash section of the ride after the drop. 48 logs were running and it took 10 minutes for the first one to come back. I was well impressed. Before we went over for our fast pass return we put on insect repellent, I had just scratched the top off my bite and the repellent really stung, Tricia laughed. Just before we got to the front of the Splash line I saw what I thought was a rash on Tricia’s leg. She realised it was the colour from the red carrier bag that Pooh bear was in that had run. We got the front seats and were soon on our way. Tricia sat the carrier bag on her feet and it was leaning against her leg. When we came down the drop I smiled nicely for the photo with my arms in the air. As soon as the flash went I bent over, everyone in our log was big so the splash was sure to be huge. It was and most of it flew over me and hit the man behind. When we got off the log I almost died from laughing. Never mind the little rash on Tricia’s leg, the whole of her leg from her feet to her knees was bright red and black and the carrier bag was white!!! She went to wash it all off while I composed myself.

We watched Spectro from Frontierland and then Wishes for the last time from Main Street. After Wishes it was time to leave. As we were leaving we heard Mickey’s voice and turned to see him waving us off from the train station at Main Street. It was just the perfect end to a perfect holiday. While we were waiting for the boat back to the Wilderness Lodge the Electric Water Parade went by. When we got back to the resort we went up to the room so I could get a sweater and then went to Roaring Forks for some pizza. Managed to get a seat before a CM made a barricade with seats to stop anyone else getting in to the seating area. Returned to room to pack. Now we had the minging bag it was easier. The message light on the phone was flashing. It was front desk to say they hoped we had enjoyed our stay. Oh we have, we have had an excellent time I told the recorded message.

The torrential rain and thunder and lightning started again at 11.30pm. Turned the lights out to go to sleep at 1am.

Day 15

It rained all night and was still raining when we got up. We had arranged for a late check out so we had the room until 1pm. Got ready for swimming and the beach anyway, I live in hope and I had packed all my clothes apart from the clothes I would be travelling in. Sat on balcony for a while daydreaming about the fantastic time we have had and watching the poncho people going for the boat then went downstairs for breakfast. After breakfast I went in the hot tub, max water temperature is 104. I lasted 5 minutes and then had to get out. Jumped in pool which was a shock to the system after the hot tub and then went to the beach. The ducks were still asleep. When they woke up I watched them wash and swim. It started to rain again so I had a last paddle and then went back to the room. Had a long soak in the bath then got ready. We left the room at 1pm. Lounged on very comfy chair in the lobby and ate some chocolate. Quicksilver man turned up at early at 1.35pm and was his usual chatty self, only time I heard him speak was when he was on his phone whilst driving. We were soon at the airport and said goodbye to Mr Quiet.

Check in was really quiet, there was only one family in front of us, we only waited a few minutes. Tricia asked check in lady if there were any 2 seats with a window. She said she would check and see if the two seater at the back of the plane was available. It wasn’t but she said she could seat us in the Upper deck but we wouldn’t get the premium service, she added there are no children allowed on the upper deck. We quickly said yes please and thank you. I was a little worried about going upstairs as we would be very high. Nice check in lady also told us we have an hours delay but who cares we are going to be in the Upper deck. Through security within minutes and went upstairs. Got chicken burgers which were very dry, cold fries and horrible tea, the mountain dew was nice so it wasn’t all bad. Did some duty free shopping.

Plane started boarding at 6.50pm. Still standing in the tunnel at 7.15pm. Apparently a toilet was blocked and then flooded so they were cleaning up the water. When we got on we climbed the spiral staircase and discovered our seats 56A and 56B were in the front row and had approx 4feet of leg room, absolutely fantastic. The Upper deck had 6 rows of seats but the seats were the same size as cupboard class apart with the same leg room apart from the ones we were in. We were so happy. We could hear a couple at the back complaining to Chantelle the air hostess. The couple and Chantelle finished up downstairs arguing with more Air Atlanta crew. We managed to hear that they had paid £120 for extra leg room and they never had any. Cabin crew told them there was nothing they could do and they would have to complain to their tour operator when they got home. We were both in agreement that we could not stay in these seats knowing that someone else had paid extra for them so Tricia went downstairs and interrupted the heated discussion to say we would swap seats with them. They were both extremely grateful, the man suffers from claustrophobia. Cabin crew very grateful also, Chantelle thanked us twice. The couple bought us chocolates from duty free which was extremely kind of them but not necessary. We had a further delay due to a slide on a door not being in the correct position. Our 6pm flight finally took off at 8.35pm. The pilot said the flight time would be 6 hours and 45 minutes, it must have been very windy outside. Read my book and chatted for hours to the man next to me. Lots of lightning in the distance that Tricia watched, it lit up the sky.

Can’t remember what the in flight entertainment was on the way back, I didn’t watch any of it. Had the sausage and mash for dinner which was lovely. Hit turbulence while we were eating and I managed to get gravy all over me. When we landed we had to be bussed from the plane to the terminal building. It was cold wet and windy when we got off the plane. Had an hours wait for our luggage, absolute chaos in the luggage collection hall. Think the baggage handlers must have been on a break. Arrived home exhausted at 10am.

We both had a fantastic relaxing holiday and I am now in the planning stages of our Commando trip at Christmas.

Thanks for the great trip reports. We are going to try and get AP rates for the WL in December, so I was glad to hear that you liked it so much.
