The Pirates and the Frog (7/17 Welcome to the Next Adventure!)

I love how you're all in Star Wars tees for your visit to Star Tours! :thumbsup2 Fun update :)

Our Fair Maiden outfits our landing parties accordingly! :goodvibes
We figured this was our last hurray with Star Tours as we know it so we had to go out in style!! ;)

No, this is not a segment dedicated to Boxmaster’s parents.
But my weekly Disney Weekend Movie Countdown.
Our 10th installment would be a Double Feature:
Lady and the Tramp

followed by

Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp's Adventure

As we watched the first installment, all the kids gathered their stuffed canines to watch with us.
We pointed out Tony’s and made note of the spaghetti scene in the alley as well as the scene where they step in the wet cement.
Both details we will be searching for when we dine at Tony’s in the Magic Kingdom for the first time.
X proudly declared that he would have to order the spaghetti and meatballs.
According to him, it’s Tony’s speciality and apparently “that’s all they have there.”
So, needless to say, we’re looking forward to our dining experience.

As for the movie, it is a classic and everyone enjoyed it – even DS8 who wasn’t sure he even wanted to see it.
But he smiled and laughed and had a good time throughout.

The sequel was the nightcap and, while not an instant classic, was a cute story.
It’s basically the opposite of the original as Scamp (the Tramp-like puppy) wants to go be more like a Tramp.
He is sick of being a house dog and doesn't think his dad would understand.
Little did he know that his dad was the greatest junkyard dog of them all!

I thought the music was very showtune-esque and not the classic sounds like the original.
The story is very basic and easy to predict yet the kids enjoyed another doggie movie and we had a good time.
All in all, a medicore flick but the, like I said, the kids had a good time.

What’s coming up you may wonder?
Well, everyone keeps making suggestions for next weekend.
And I even just ordered a couple of movies from the Disney Movie Club to round out our 21-movie salute so stay tuned!

This week’s Disney Movie Countdown entry was something I’ve only seen once and when I was very young.
But we figured this was a perfect opportunity to show the kids.
They would be experiencing this movie first-hand and for the first time during our January trip.

Swiss Family Robinson

is a Disney classic and I thought it would be a fun departure for the usual animated flicks.
The movie was dated but still pretty good.
Our eldest enjoyed the pirates and the inventions,
our youngest enjoyed the animals and silliness of the youngest Robinson,
and our princess liked the romance.
She was even observant enough to notice that Roberta was indeed a girl despite being dressed as a cabin boy.

But the best part of the movie in my opinion, is that amazing Treehouse that was built.
Believe it or not, the treehouse was actually built into a large tree in Tobago and that tree still stands today.
The inventions and the traps surrounding the tree and the fortress that the family prepared were also a lot of fun.
I mean, who wouldn’t enjoy a movie with coconut bombs and an animal race between kids riding an ostrich, a zebra, a donkey, and an elephant?!?!

I told the kids to watch the Treehouse closely as they will have the opportunity to play in a replica once we get to Walt Disney World.
To further the excitement, the second disk had a little featurette on the Treehouse opening in Disneyland.
In attendance were Walt Disney, John Mills (star of the move) and his daughter Haley.
So now, my trio is actually psyched to see the one attraction that we usually skip in Adventureland.
And I think they’ll appreciate it more after now understanding where it came from.
Can you tell I’m really enjoying these Disney “lessons” with the family?
It’s a great way to get excited about an upcoming trip.
And with that, we’re back to our Pirate Adventure.
But, before we go – any guesses as to next week’s movie?

Welcome back me hearties.
After our brush with a tour of the skies, we needed a break.
Lady and the Tramp opted to head off on their own and promised to meet back for dinner.
Me crew, on the other hand, had some explorin’ to do.
First on the agenda was to track down the long lost Pirate Indiana Jones.
Tales told of Pirate Jones making his way through these parts in search of treasure.
If we were lucky and at the ready, maybe we would discover a clue to Jones and his treasure.
We headed past the show where Pirate Jones now performed and found this odd little sign:
Disney2009Pirates362.jpg

Now why was the NOT crossed out?
Hmmmmm.
Me crew wasted no time jumping for the rope and pulling with all their might.
And then we gasped.
At the bottom of the well, it seems Pirate Jones left behind someone – maybe ‘twas someone who had laid a claim to his treasure.
Several more pulls and this lost soul told us his story.
This Pirate Jones was deadly indeed and me crew was giggling with anticipation of the dread pirate’s next clue.
Around the corner, we found some trucks and what seemed to be a dig site.
But there, on a table was a prized possession indeed.
Captain Jones’ trademark hat.
Now where could he have gone without that?
Disney2009Pirates365.jpg

Not wanting to find out the answer, we quickly headed away from this area.
We did not want to run into the same fate as Indy.

But I had heard tale of one other adventurer clear across the park.
The Fair Maiden opted to stay put with sleeping X.
However, me and me First Mate and Princess headed off.
To adventure says I!

At the other end of the park, we found what we were in search of.
A small room off to the side of the Animation Building acted like a log of this new pirate’s adventures.
Pirate Carl was an elder Pirate Lord but still was worthy of respect.
He discovered an island paradise and battled a horde of blood-thirsty dogs all by himself while carrying a house on his shoulders – literally!
Herein I have included the pictoral journal of this fine Pirate Lord.

Disney2009Pirates368.jpg

Disney2009Pirates369a.jpg

Disney2009Pirates370.jpg

Disney2009Pirates373.jpg

After reviewing the log of the Pirate Lord, me First Mate and Pirate Princess discovered something of their own.
The Mouse had left another of his secretive calling cards here on the floor and me crew had found it.
No clue gets by them – I be so proud of me mates.
Disney2009Pirates371.jpg

Then, around the corner, it was time to meet the Pirate Lord and his crew.
First Mate Russell and Dug stood by their Captain and greeted us with open arms.
Disney2009PiratesPass232.jpg

Even their lookout Kevin made an appearance here and there!
Disney2009PiratesPass228.jpg

After meeting these true adventurers, we decided it was time to head back to our ship for the afternoon.
We met back up with the Fair Maiden who was exploring as well.
In our leave, she found some of those khaki-clad sorcerers and began to pose for posterity.
Disney2009PiratesPass216.jpg

Disney2009PiratesPass220.jpg

Disney2009PiratesPass222.jpg

But now that the crew was together again, ‘Twas time to pillage and plunder the Caribbean!
Avast me hearties!

Awesome updates, Mike!!!! I had NO idea that the treehouse was acutally builit in Togago- and coincidentally, MIke and I are checking Tobago out as a potential anniversary trip destination. Hmmm.... that tree might be a fun sight to see!! Of course the set would be long gone, but nevertheless, it'd be fun to say I'd been there.

Anyway, adorable pix of X sleeping in his dingy. :thumbsup2 They grow up so fast!

I love the pulley and voice. It is one of those little hidden extras that add the Disney magic :goodvibes

Dug is one of my favorites so I love the picture with the Up gang! We only saw them two at a time so it was cool you got all 3! :)

That would be a fun Disney touch to a vacation.
Apparently alot of the locations are still in tact including the watering hole used in the flick.
It could be like a scavenger hunt as you try to find them all! :goodvibes

The pulley/voice is a great touch - the kids loved it.
Although I love the detail of Indy's hat much more!

As for the Up chars, I didn't realize all 3 weren't always out at that time.
I really love those Up borders - they make the picture that much better.

So this week, we had to prepare the wee ones for an experience that would literally shake their worlds!
A friend of us just returned from Walt Disney World with kids about the same age.
And they told tales of leaving this ride crying.
DS8 laughed and DD6 said she's still ready to give it a shot.
(But she said she might hide her head against me if she has to.)
What ride could scare the dickens out of a family?
Why, my kids are finally tall enough to ride...

DINOSAUR!

It seemed only appropriate to have them meet the characters they would encounter.
I really like this movie although I must say I was disappointed when the opening ended and the dinos began to talk.
The introduction felt like the opening of the Lion King.
Very grand and majestic with a great score (I love "The Egg Travels").
But then it loses some of its power when the lemurs and dinos begin talking.
I often wondered if they could've pulled off the entire movie without dialogue.
Oh well...

The movie is a nice flick and the animation is gorgeous.
This is Jurassic Park taken to a whole new level.
The details of the skin down to the last scale is just plain awesome.
The plotline is fairly basic but the kids had a good time.
They got to meet the star of the Animal Kingdom attraction - Aladar himself.
And then, of course, the infamous Carnotaurus.
I explained that this is what made their friends cry.
When DD asked if she could ride on the opposite side of it, I explained that it's going to chase her.
That made her a bit uneasy... :goodvibes

Anyway, after the movie, it was dinnertime.
The kids immediately request Dinosaur Chicken Nuggets.
(You know those nuggets shaped liked dinosaurs?)
Unfortunately we didn't have them.
Their next suggestion? Dino Eggs!
So I made my famous Cheesy Popcorn Eggs for all to enjoy.
But these, of course, were Cheesey Popcorn Dinosaur Eggs! ;)

Now, I think it's time to take to the seas...
Come along me hearties and be sure to check back for next week's Disney Movie Countdown Selection!

We boarded another of the iron horses and headed back to the Caribbean.
We transferred the sleeping X to a bed aboard our vessel while the rest of the crew and I changed into more appropriate attire.
While the Maiden remained with X, the rest headed out to pillage and plunder the likes of Old Port Royale.
A short ride on another iron horse and we had arrived:
Centertown in Old Port Royale.
They had no idea what they were in for.
Disney2009Pirates375.jpg

And with that, I unleashed me crew.
Me Hearties charged through the lobby and back outside.
And there it was.
The old fort protecting these here Caribbean Islands.
Disney2009Pirates377.jpg

Canons were at the ready on both sides as the structure was meant to protect all the citizens bathing in the water below.
Disney2009Pirates378.jpg

But me crew was not deterred and we found our way in.
There – a small tube winding down through the fort.
It was a longshot but we’d have to chance it.
Disney2009Pirates387.jpg

We scoped out the surrounding areas as we planned our attack.
It would be a sneaky assault of the well armed fortress.
But me crew was up for the challenge and all smiles!
Disney2009Pirates380.jpg

The First Mate and the Princess were to be the first wave.
They slowly made their way to the winding tunnels we spied.
Avast me hearties! Yo Ho!
Disney2009Pirates379.jpg

A long swim later and we arrived at the treacherous part of our assault.
We had to bypass the weaponry itself without being spied by the naval lookouts posted all over.
Disney2009Pirates382.jpg

The First Mate laughed at the danger almost daring the canons to fire as he stood there cackling away.
Disney2009Pirates383.jpg

The Princess was a bit more shrewd.
Scaling the walls she made sure she could not be seen but she also passed this test with smiles.
Disney2009Pirates384.jpg

Then it was on to the cells where we made sure to release all pirate brethren we could find.
Good thing that shaggy dog didn’t steal the key again.
Or else, this here would be our view.
Disney2009Pirates386.jpg

We made it through and the crew had a blast sliding down into the sea over and over again.
This fort be made for us pirates to invade you see!
But then, off the side, the First Mate spied something else.
Another pirate vessel off to starboard.
Our First Mate ran over to check it out.
Disney2009Pirates388.jpg

Upon closer inspection, we found the vessel to be in dire straits.
It looks like those canons had indeed gotten the best of it.
The bow was cleanly separated from the rest of the ship from the most recent blast.
Disney2009Pirates389.jpg

And there on the steering wheel itself was the Mark of the Mouse.
Alas, this must be his evil work.
That rodent’s power stretches far and wide indeed!
Disney2009Pirates398.jpg

The only survivor still on board seemed to be the Captain’s trusty parrot.
Disney2009Pirates390.jpg

The sea was definitely reclaiming this vessel as water poured in from every side.
Twas dangerous to be here we knew but we be pirates and looting a deserted ship be right up our alley!
Disney2009Pirates391.jpg

We scrambled around the backside and noticed a large barrel suspended above the wreckage.
We better watch out for that later.
I sent me crew inside to pillage and plunder what they could find…
Disney2009Pirates392.jpg

And the canons struck once more.
We were being bombarded from all sides.
Me First Mate just missed several blasts.
Disney2009Pirates393.jpg

As did the Pirate Princess as she just barely made her way out of the vessel!
Disney2009Pirates394.jpg

The crew tried once more to invade the wreckage but once again was forced out as the canons continued their attack.
Disney2009Pirates397.jpg

However, the First Mate could not be deterred.
He has moxy, that one.
And he makes a Cap’n proud.
He took off in one more valiant attempt to grab any pieces of eight he could find.
Unfortunately, the navy took note.
Shiver Me Timbers!
I’ve never seen such an onslaught!
There were no shots across the bow this time – the navy was out for vengeance against our kind.
And vengeance they achieved as the First Mate was caught in the middle of an intense explosion!
Disney2009Pirates399.jpg

If you look closely, you can see the poor lad getting swallowed up by the sea.
We were beaten and a pirate knows when it be time to run away.
‘sides, all this adventure makes a swashbuckler hungry.
It be time to raid the galley!
Come along me hearties!

Nice updates! I love the pictures from the pool! You really captured the details and the kids look like they were having a great time :goodvibes

Nice updates! I love the pictures from the pool! You really captured the details and the kids look like they were having a great time :goodvibes

Believe it or not, this was the 1st time I've ever taken the time to swim at a pool in WDW.
I figured the brand new pool at the Caribbean not only fit into our pirate themed trip but looked awesome!
We only had a short time but the kids had a blast!
And I love :lovestruc the pic of DS8 getting pummeled by the water barrel.

Awesome Pool pix ,the kids look like they are having soooo much fun!!!

The kids definitely had a blast.
So much so that we're even considering some pool time on our upcoming January trip.
Unfortunately, Pop Century's pools are nowhere near as cool as Old Port Royale...

Our Disney Movie Countdown continues as this week we opt for the theatre.
Week 13 (less than 60 days left till we head back!!) was Disney's 50th Animated Feature:

Tangled!

We saw it on Turkey Day and had a blast.
This was much better than we anticipated (and we had high hopes).
It was better (in our opinion) than Princess and the Frog and definitely an instant classic.
We saw it in 2D but I can imagine the water explosion sequence and the lantern sequence must have been beautiful in 3D.

But this was not your ordinary princess flick.
Even the boys had a great time.
Supporting characters Maximus and Pascal filled the movie with humor and didn't even have to talk.
Rooting for Flynn Rider was great too as he was a thief, not a prince.
And you will find the Snuggly Duckling one of the most fun scenes in Disney "villain" history.
It makes you wonder if Gaston ever found his way there with all the antlers.

All in all, a great movie and our DD is already excited to collect all of the Tangled things she can get her hands on.
She already has a Rapunzel doll (and a Flynn Rider one is on its way for the holidays).
But she will be on Cloud Nine once she meets them in person at the new Play N Greet.
Just another thing to get everyone excited to head to the World!

But now, it's back to our story.
The Pirates had just escaped a seige at sea and were scrambling back to shore hoping to sneak into Old Port Royale...

After our narrow escape at the fort of Old Port Royale, we decided rather than to run away, we would sneak back into the city itself.
We were hungry and there be a galley in there we have yet to plunder.
We found the Fair Maiden and Little X and proceeded to wander the streets of this fair town.
Disney2009Pirates429.jpg

And we figured we ought to change from our scivvies into more suitable attire.
After changing, we located the rest of our party and sat down with Lady and the Tramp.
Disney2009Pirates407.jpg

However, after one look at the menu, the Tramp decided to move on and plunder another galley.
This left the 5 of us still hungry and ready to try the place the locals call Shutters.
Disney2009Pirates404.jpg

The locale had high ceilings with lanterns lighting the way.
Disney2009Pirates408.jpg

But, as you might guess, it is known for its multi-colored shutters adorning the many windows throughout…
Disney2009Pirates421.jpg

Disney2009Pirates422.jpg

Service was slow in this here galley so we occupied ourselves with some pictures of me crew.
The Princess was in good spirits and wore her lei proudly.
Disney2009Pirates409.jpg

The Fair Maiden and X were decked out in their Halloween finest for it was All Saint’s Eve.
Disney2009Pirates410.jpg

And The First Mate was raring to go as usual
Disney2009Pirates411.jpg

Our appetizers finally arrived.
I started with a simple Cesar Salad.
Disney2009Pirates412.jpg

The Fair Maiden opted for the Shrimp Fritters with 3 dipping sauces.
Disney2009Pirates413.jpg

Neither appetizer was outstanding and our Maiden wasn’t very happy with the shrimp.
For dinner, me crew ordered macaroni and cheese with fruit.
Disney2009Pirates416.jpg

Complete with pomegranate lemonade
Disney2009Pirates419a.jpg

I went with a Char-crusted New York Strip Steak with a baked potato and plantains.
Disney2009Pirates420.jpg

The Fair Maiden ordered the Caribbean Pasta with Shrimp although I neglected to snap a shot.
Neither entrée was very palatable.

For dessert, the Fair Maiden had key lime pie
Disney2009Pirates424.jpg

And me crew went with strawberries and cream,
Disney2009Pirates423.jpg

and ice cream sundaes
Disney2009Pirates425.jpg

Disney2009Pirates426.jpg

I had the chocolate cake and was also unimpressed.
Basically, the service was slow and the adult meals were borderline unedible.
This was by far the worst meal we’ve ever had at Walt Disney World.
I’d rate it along with Capt’n Jack’s as the worst two restaurants we’ve been at on property.
I didn’t even finish mine and we stormed away with our bellies still empty.

But with all the waiting, at least X kept himself busy.
Disney2009Pirates428.jpg

And we were able to catch a parade of other crews march through in honor of the holiday.
The only saving grace for the place was the virgin Shutters Swirl that the adults both ordered.
Disney2009Pirates418.jpg

So after a very disappointing meal, we plundered some souvenirs in the gift shop and headed back out into the night.
Old Port Royal gave off a warm glow as the lights flickered over the sea.
Disney2009Pirates433.jpg

Disney2009Pirates435.jpg

Disney2009Pirates434.jpg

Back in the plaza, guests were sparse but we were enjoying the night air.
Disney2009Pirates436a.jpg

Lady and the Tramp returned and caught me and me maiden in our Halloween finest.
Disney2009Pirates439.jpg

Since we had the stars to guide us, we opted to explore the Caribbean at night and wander back to our ship by foot.
The Tramp headed home but Lady joined us to check out our vessel.
They were stationed at one of the other ports and had lodging filled with fishes instead of a Pirate Ship like ours.

So we followed the path and passed by the island in the center and several sand dunes for playin'.
Surprisingly we were greeted at the underpasses by these guardians of the night:
Disney2009Pirates444.jpg

But before we returned to our ship for the night, Lady took a picture of me whole crew.
Happy Belated Halloween everyone!
Disney2009Pirates446.jpg

Do come back though ye swabs.
Day Three we head back to the Kingdom and take over!
There be pirates and frogs aplenty!
Heave Ho!

I'm so glad to hear you all enjoyed Tangled! :goodvibes We really want to see it but couldn't get a time this weekend when we could all go. Hopefully we'll make it next weekend.

Sorry to hear your dinner wasn't enjoyable. I never seem to hear good things about the TS restaurants at the moderates.
