Speaking of drama, I have my own vent. Feel free to skip if you wish.
Two bad items in the mail today. The first is that I might be losing my health insurance. I am on COBRA, and apparently my former employer is no longer using the same COBRA provider. I have to call to find out how to get coverage. From working there, I know that the HR department is notorious for not taking calls from former employees and brushing them off. I've also heard that the guy who was in HR when I worked there has been fired, so there is a good chance I'll be shuffled around just long enough to disqualify me from coverage.
I also got a letter from unemployment. They have suspended my payments effective immediately. The letter doesn't state why, it just says there is a question about my eligibility and separation from employment (the same crappy job as above) and includes a form which I've already submitted about why I am unemployed. They set up an appointment for a phone interview to review my case and all payment are suspended until a determination is made a few weeks after the interview. The interview is a month away.
So not only are my unemployment payments cancelled for a month, but if they determine that I'm not eligible for any reason, I will have to pay back all the payments I've already received. This completely sucks. I have no idea what the issue is. I can think of three possibilities:
1 - I originally applied and then didn't make weekly claims because I had the temp job, then the temp job was temp-to-perm. Meanwhile, I was approved but still made no weekly claimes until the temp job ended. Then I reapplied and was approved based on my first application. I wonder if the temp job has something to do with it.
2 - My previous employer has had some turnover in the HR department. I would not be surprised if a new HR person reviewed the files and was told a different story than what really happened, and is trying to reverse the decision to save the company money.
3 - I haven't been able to find work and honestly, probably haven't been looking as hard as the unemployment office would like. I've pretty much been relying on the agency to find me work and they haven't. I have not been keeping records of my job search. It's unlikely that this is the problem, because of the paperwork included in the letter today - it was all about my separation from the last place. You all remember how much I hated it there and how awful they treated their employees -- they were much much worse to ex-employees.
I tried to call the unemployment office today but was on hold, long distance, for 45 minutes and had to hang up. I'm sure they won't be able to tell me anything anyway but I'll be trying again (and again and again) until I can get a hold of someone. I have no idea how they expect unemployed people to wait over a MONTH to determine eligibility for payment they've already been getting!! I am SO freaked out over this, I just want to curl up in a ball and cry. I can't even start work this month even if I do find something, because my parents will be in Egypt for 16 days (the last 1/2 of the month) and I have no babysitter.
I am beyond stressed out and have no idea what I'm going to do. I have enough money to pay my bills for the month but nothing extra, it will deplete all of my savings. School orientation is tomorrow and I have to buy books, classes start on Tuesday. I need new contacts & an eye exam. Lyzzie needs new glasses & an eye exam. I have a cavity & no dental insurance. There is nowhere I can cut expenses, we are already living on a wish & a prayer. Things are just piling up and I feel so lost.
Sorry for the long vent. I am at the end of my rope and really needed to unload.
On a happier note, Emma had a good birthday. I didn't have much for her but she liked it all. We didn't get to go to the pool like she wanted to, we got as far as the end of the driveway and it started raining. It was just a normal day, but with presents so she was happy.
In a few minutes, we are going to fight the crowds at Sonic for free root beer floats. Yummy!
